This is great news. I believe Greek hockey will be stable and competitive in a very short time thanks to the dedicated hockey community there who have stuck through these bad times.

Congratulations and Good Luck, Hellas!

Athens...as always. Don't get overexcited though. People make the difference in hockey, not an ice rink... :crossing fingers:

Having a rink at least gives people a chance to make the difference.

Anyways they will have to work at establishing their IH first ... I do not know how stong their IH is??, ... I think Turkish Ice Hockey Federation and the Greek Ice Hockey Federation should organise a friendly match between the two nations.. I for one would go with my good Greek friend....

Greece defeated Iceland 8-6 back in 1999 to finish 8th of 9 in Pool D, but to give some indication of where things lie now, Birgir Orn Sveinsson (1979 born) had a save percentage of 68.42 which by 2006 became a 91.30 for a Division III gold medalist. During this time, two Icelanders have played professionally in Asia League Ice Hockey while the Greeks are going 1400 days without home ice.

According to http://www.icehockey.gr/indexen.htm there are elements with Greece actively trying to block the construction of the ice-rink.
Quote:
Despite all efforts by the Greek Ice hockey players and the help by the Hellenic Ice Sports Federation to keep the sport alive in Greece, there are still people in this country that are trying to stop the building of the ice rink. We are the only European country, along with Albania, that does not have a rink but that doesn't mean anything to some people.
The article (in Greek): http://www.enet.gr/online/online_text/c=112,id=1478964
I am hoping some of our Greek members will be able to translate the main points of this.

well the main point is that the place, where the ice rink is to be built, is marked as "habitation-only" one (that means no big facilities such as an ice rink), however the ministry of environment & public works issued the construction permission neglecting this fact. Thus, the municipality there, along with the citizens, is a bit upset and doesn't want it to be built there. (though they propose some other places)

and now we are at a point "wtf is going on with the minister" and "do we search for alternates or stick to the plan of the same place?"

personal opinion: as i have told, don't believe anything unless you see the construction works actually working :P

Very hard to find since they don't have an website. I'll try though.

Balkan Hockey League? Hm..haven't heard anything about it, so far.
What results? There isn't a national championship either formal games played.
