The 6th Asian Winter Games

The 6th Asian Winter Game will be held Changchun, China from January 28 to February 4, 2007
Hong Kong Ice Hockey Association is going to send the Men's team for the ice hockey competition. I think this the second time that Hong Kong is going to send a team to the asian games. The first time I think they lost 44-1 to Japan but someone would have to check

Here is the Hong Kong Roster

Last Name-- First Name---Position
1 Chan Yiu Fai (Jason) Forward
2 Cheng Siu Lun Forward
3 Cheung Tsz Wo, Bosco Forward
4 Chim Terence Forward
5 Fung Bun Yu, Bernard Forward
6 Li Kwan Shing Forward
7 Ng Chai Ming Forward
8 Tam Kong Chee, Arthur Forward
9 Wong Pak Lam, Theophilus Forward
10 Yung Wai Huen, Albert Forward
11 Chim Chi On Defence
12 Leung Ming Hon, Jeff Defence
13 Leung Sau Chung Defence
14 Ma Hon Chung, Julian Defence
15 Ng Ka Ki, Kevin Defence
16 Poon Ka Wah, Laputa Defence
17 Suen Chun Fung Defence
18 Tsang Tze Chung, Dennis Defence
19 Wong Cheung Defence
20 Yeung Ting Kwan Defence
21 Yang Scott Goalie
22 Wong Samuel Goalie

Hong-Kong at the 2003 Winter Games

Hong-Kong's debut was in 2003, you're right

But I found only one score:

06. Jan 03: 10th Winter Games at Harbin, China, Hong-Kong vs Macao 30 - 1

I think not only National Teams played in Harbin. As example Harbin and Qiqihar played at this Winter Games...

44:1

the 44:1 score was Japan vs Kuweit from the 1999 Asian Winter Games, played at 30.01.1999 in Kangnung, Rep. of Korea

That was the Chinese National Winter Games, not the Asian Winter Games.

I have noticed that the ongoing Asian Summer Games are broadcasted on Eurosport. Any chance of the Winter Games being broadcasted? Though they probably wouldn't show any hockey in any case...

What about Asian sports channels? Does anyone know if the AWG (especially hockey) is being broadcasted? I am asking this since I have seen quite a few Asian sport channel streams in different sources. Maybe we could get lucky. Watching Thailand vs. UAE would be a blast.

Medal Round (1st - 4th place, Round Robin)

Jan 31, 17:00: JPN vs KOR
Jan 31, 20:30: CHN vs KAZ
Feb 1, 17:00: JPN vs KAZ
Feb 1, 19:00: CHN vs KOR
Feb 3, 13:30: JPN vs CHN
Feb 3, 17:00: KAZ vs KOR

(These teams are expected to win in their respective Pre-lim groups I guess)

Placement Round (5th place - 11th place) times are in my hands, but they are very messy and don't make a lot of sense. So I'll get confirmation before i post them.

CCTV will be covering the AWGs, and CCTV is viewable via um... technology over the internet. ;)

Awesome!! :claphands Is CCTV Japanese, Chinese or just generally Asian (or something else)? Could you provide links and tv schedule when the games are closer? Also do you know if they cover the prelim groups or just the final round)

CCTV is the Chinese state channel.

Yeah, the only real battle in the preliminary rounds seems to be the Japan-DPRK group. And that's a battle from many perspectives :P

Looking at the teams, Kazakhstan, Japan, China, South Korea will surely win their respective groups. The official schedules already listed these teams as the teams to participate in the medal round :P

Looking at the rest of the teams, North Korea will probably stand out, then comes UAE and Kuwait. Hong Kong, Macau, and Malaysia will probably be the lower ranked teams.

I will be participating in these games :) and i hope I can keep you guys posted during the games. And perhaps give you all some thoughts on these teams afterwards.

For the lower ranked teams, the AWG is probably a good place for them to see where they stand in terms of competitiveness. Hopefully these places' local media will spend some time covering these games, and get more Asians interested in this wonderful game.

I've just realized that the Groups aren't already listed here... So here they are:

Group A
Japan, North Korea

Group B
Kazakhstan, Thailand, UAE

Group C
China, Kuwait, Macau

Group D
South Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong

Interestingly Group A has only 2 teams. One team has probably withdrew or cancelled their participation in the ice hockey games, and I'm guessing its Taiwan (or Chinese Taipei).

I am waiting your reports with interest! :003: Do you know if the lower ranked teams have any games after preliminary groups? Seems kinda waste if eg. North Korea goes to the games for only 1 game...

I'm pretty positive that it's Mongolia... They've played in the last 2 winter games and I think it would have a been a good 'test' and preperation for the Div III's in April...

I also speculated about it being Mongolia, in the Malaysian thread http://www.internationalhockeygang.o...ead.php?t=4114

Yes there will be a placement round for 5th - 11th place teams. The schedule is really confusing so i thought i'd leave it until i see the official final schedule.

But anyway, from what I understand from the schedule, here's my intepretation:

Placement Round (5th - 11th Place)
30 Jan, 13:30 - [Game #1] Group C 3rd vs Group B 3rd
30 Jan, 17:00 - [Game #2] Group A 2nd vs Group D 2nd
30 Jan, 20:30 - [Game #3] Group C 2nd vs Group B 2nd
2 Feb, 13:30 - Group D 3rd vs Winner of Game #1 (For 9th and 10th Place)
2 Feb, 17:00 - Loser of Game 2 vs Loser of Game 3 (For 7th and 8th Place)
2 Feb, 20:30 - Winner of Game 2 vs Winner of Game 3 (For 5th and 6th Place)
* Loser of Game #1 will be placed 11th.

I'm not too sure about the 2 Feb 13:30 game and the 11th place arrangement, but that's all I have received so far.

Mongolia

Mongolia do not play at the Asain Wintergames 2007. There are many reasons . But the big reasons are the money. They are preparing to go to Ireland.
This was told by the people of Mongolia Icehockeyfederation.

The competition started from 6 december till 13 dcember 2006. the first part with 5 or 6 teams. When i have more info i will put it on the site. :hockey:

Women's Tournament

Five pretty even teams, the Koreas being a bit weaker though. I'm going to go on a slightly risky pick and put Kazakhstan on top. China has long been the best team in this group but I think the time for Team KZ is now. They'll finally overtake the Chinese. Japan could throw a spanner into the works though, they've played quite solid and always at, near, or above Kazakhstan's level. Great to see a women's tournament included.

Short-Track Olympian Seeks Hockey Success

Short-track skater Chun Lee-kyung, who won four gold medals in the Winters Olympics at Lillehammer in 1994 and at Nakano in 1998, is returning to the ice as an ice hockey player.
Chun, 30, who restarted her career on the ice last year, will take part in the Winter Asian Games in Changchun, China, next month.

UAE in tough group for first Asian Winter Games

UAE are in China all ready and have played 3 games against club sides from China winning all three games. UAE thinks they have a chance to make it to the medal round.

Very impressive show by UAE. I wish them the best of luck, and hopefully they'll consider themselves ready for World Championship play after this.
