Central Hockey League 2006/07

The Arizona Sundogs Professional Hockey Club, an expansion Central Hockey League team scheduled to begin play this fall, announced their affiliation with the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League.

The Sundogs already possess ties to the Colorado Avalanche organization. Sundogs Co-Owner and Governor Eric Lacroix played three seasons with the Avalanche before serving as Assistant Coach in charge of video and Director of Hockey Operations. Team President and Managing Director Hayne Ellis also has an Avalanche connection, working in the NHL Club’s Communications Department for eight years.

First signs

  • The Austin Ice Bats of the Central Hockey League today announced the first signings of the off-season with the return of the team’s top two scorers, John McNabb and Aaron Davis. The two forwards have been signed to contract for the 2006-07 season
  • The Wichita Thunder announced the signing of All-Star left wing and team captain Jason Duda
  • The 2005/2006 CHL Ray Miron President’s Cup Champion Laredo Bucks have announced the signing of goaltender Jay Ewasiuk. Ewasiuk, who played this past season at the University of Windsor, is the first player signed by the Bucks this off season. Ewasiuk, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, spent three seasons at the University of Windsor. This past season he posted the second best save percentage in all of Canadian college hockey in the CIS at .932, and the sixth best goals allowed average in the CIS at 2.24.
  • Rocky Mountain Rage Head Coach Tracy Egeland has announced the addition of former Laredo Bucks forward Nick Warriner for the inaugural 2006-07 season. The Blenheim, Ontario native was Egeland’s second pick (third overall) at the 2006 CHL Expansion Draft on June 3
  • The defending Southwest Division Champion Odessa Jackalopes have announced two key player signings for the 2006-2007 season. All-Star goaltender Mike Gorman returns to Odessa, as does physical presence Jeff Ewasko. The pair now give the Jackalopes eight signed returnees from the 2005-2006 campaign
  • The Lubbock Cotton Kings announced their first player signing for the 2006/2007 season, as goaltender Brett Koscielny has re-signed with the team

season format

The Central Hockey League has announced several operational changes implemented for the coming season of play, all ratified by the CHL Board of Governors at meetings during the recently completed Spring Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona. Various alignment, playoff format and roster regulations scenarios were presented and discussed, resulting in several adjustments for the 2006-2007 season.
  • The CHL will maintain its two conference, four division alignment for the sixth consecutive season. The expansion Arizona Sundogs and New Mexico Scorpions, the latter returning from a one year hiatus, will join the Amarillo Gorillas, Lubbock Cotton Kings and Odessa Jackalopes in the five team Southwest Division. The Southeast Division remains as in 2005-2006, featuring the Austin Ice Bats, Corpus Christi Rayz, Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and defending Ray Miron President’s Cup Champion Laredo Bucks. In the Northern Conference, the expansion Rocky Mountain Rage joins the Colorado Eagles, Oklahoma City Blazers and Wichita Thunder in the Northwest Division, while the Tulsa Oilers shift to the Northeast Division alongside the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, Memphis RiverKings and Youngstown SteelHounds.
  • The post-season field in the CHL has been expanded from eight to 12 teams for the coming season, with the top six clubs in each conference participating in the playoffs. Each of the four regular season division champions will be seeded either first or second in their conference, with the four teams with the next highest point totals in each conference also participating and seeded third through sixth. In the opening round, Seed 1 will play Seed 6, Seed 2 will play Seed 5 and Seed 3 will play Seed 4 in each conference. The highest seeded team who loses in the opening round will still advance to the Conference Semi-Finals and automatically be seeded fourth for the remainder of the Conference playoffs. Following both the Conference Semi-Finals and Conference Finals, the remaining representatives from each conference will play in the Ray Miron President’s Cup Finals, with home ice advantage awarded to the club with the best regular season record, regardless of any earlier seeding. All four playoff rounds will feature best-of-seven game formats.
  • The CHL’s roster regulations have also been modified for 2006-2007. Teams are still required to maintain a minimum of five ‘developmental’ players (128 or fewer professional games played) and can have a maximum of four ‘veteran’ players. Veteran classification has been altered to include all players with more than 280 games of professional experience, raised from the 260 total used in 2005-2006. Additionally, player compensation has been raised to $10,000.00 per week for up to an 18 man roster.

Arizona Sundogs and Rocky Mountain Rage

I'll just put up some little info about these two new teams.

Arizona Sundogs, Prescott Valley, AZ
Home Arena: Prescott Valley Convention and Events Center (5 264)
Affiliated with Colorado Avalanche
Head Coach/GM: Marco Pietroniro
Signed players:
Dan Laperriere (D)
Kyle Orr (D)
Doug Orr (F)
Karl Sellan (F)

All four players are Canadians. Laperriere is the most experienced and even has games with St. Louis Blues and Ottawa Senators. I wonder if the Orrs are related to Bobby Orr?

Rocky Mountain Rage, Broomfield, CO
Home Arena: Broomfield Event Center (6 000)
Head Coach: Tracy Egeland
Signed players:
David Guerrera (G)
Matic Kralj (F)
Nick Warriner (F)
Anders Strome (F)
Warriner and Strome are both Canadians and have both played mainly CHL as professionals (Strome one season in ECHL). Both seem like good scorers for this level. Slovenian Kralj has also played CHL for 4 seasons and was the best scorer in his team (Rio Grande) last year. Canadian goalie Guerrera played last year in Norway but before that he won the President's Cup with Laredo Bucks and was the CHL rookie of the year in 2003-04 season. Pretty good catches for this team.

I'll definitely be looking closely to CHL and especially Rocky Mountain Rage next year. Broomfield is my American home town :023: and the new Event Center is less than 3 km from where I lived.

The Austin Ice Bats of the Central Hockey League announced the renewal of an affiliation agreement with the Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League and their top affiliate, the American Hockey League's Houston Aeros. Under the agreement, the Ice Bats will receive AHL-contracted players from the Wild organization, and will be able to place players in Houston's pre-season training camp. The agreement will also allow the Aeros to call up Ice Bats players for competition at the AAA-level.

Goalkeeper Walter Bartholomäus is reported to join the New Mexico Scorpions for next season.
He's a reasonable goalie and I think he would be more valuable in Austria...maybe he want's to work his way up, CHL can't be better than our league. :scratchhe

I wouldn't think it is Rex.

The only thing I can say is that New Mexico has always been a great place to play. The players are treated well and they have great fans. New Mexico took a year off over new stadium issues.

I can imagine that NM is a nice place to be, especially in hockey season...but irrespective of how nice everything is there, one important thing can't be better than here: money. as far as I see the market for players in NA is far more competitive from a players view whereas here in AUT he could surely get far more money because from hios abilities he could surely have a contract with an EBL team

Maybe you read my last post in EBL rumors thread, Innsbruck is about to sign a player from LNAH (at least one of this league's topscorers) an that guy posted in his teams forum that he'd get 7 to 8 times his LNAH salary in Austria - as an absolute no-name import. As Austrians are much more scarce and protected by the import rule a guy like Bartho should earn much much more in EBL than in CHL.

But maybe his intention is really just to have a good time and see something new or he wants to work his way up in NA (guess he won't get farther than ECHL/AHL) as also canuckjr speculated

ECHL and CHL are comparable in payscale and skill levels. The AHL is signigicantly better paying and if the guy is good enough and catches the eye of an NHL team it is always a possibility to get a shot at the show.

I am guessing that your guy is just looking for that once in a lifetime opportunity to be an NHL player or at least be in a position to get noticed.

You won't get any argument from me.

I was merely commenting on why NM might seem attractive to a young idealistic player. If the move is an intelligent one or well thought out is another matter. He may feel that he has a legitimate shot at climbing the ladder -- whether that's true or not.

I would have no idea what the EBL pays -- I don't have any idea what the CHL pays for that matter. So I would have no ability to compare salary one way or another.

I'm sure the EBL pays better than the CHL. However, the level of play is probably roughly equal.

The CHL and ECHL are roughly equal in level of play, and ECHL teams that toured Austria a few years back had close games with Austrian league teams.

I am not sure if I can cover this league this extensively all season long (for some reason I have the feeling I should be erm.. studying sometimes...) but it seems a very interesting league so I'll try. Plenty of goals, good attendances, plenty of SOG. Also with teams called the Sundogs, Killer Bees, Mudbugs etc. and with players with names like Orr and Laperriere, it oughta be good.

Also Congratulations to Arizona Sundogs and Rocky Mountain Rage for first franchise wins in CHL!

Colorado Eagles Captain Greg Pankewicz was named the Central Hockey League Oakley Player of the Week for week three of the CHL season.
In two games, Pankewicz had four goals, including the 500th of his career, and four assists against the Arizona Sundogs

Greg Pankewicz also is the only professional hockey player to have 500 goals, 1000 points and 3,000 penalty minutes in his 15 year professional hockey career.

I was fortunate to be at that game and photographed the presentation of a commemorative plaque to Greg by the Colorado Eagles president, Ralph Backstrom.

Youngstown center Chris Richards becomes the season's first two-timer Player of the Week winner with a dozen points in three SteelHounds contests, while Colorado's Marco Emond improved his season record to 7-0-0 with a pair of wins and a shutout to earn selection as the Goaltender of the Week.

Corpus Christi Rayz forward Jason Baird was named the Central Hockey League's Player of the Week on Monday.
The former Rayz MVP had three goals and four assists in a three-game stint versus the Youngstown Steelhounds

Jeremy Symington of Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees has been named the Goalie of the Week for Week 6 (Nov. 20-26) of the season.
Symington posted consecutive shutouts for the Bees this past week. On Wednesday, Nov. 22, he stopped 34 shots in a 3-0 victory at home over Bossier-Shreveport. Two days later, he made 31 saves in another 3-0 win over the Mudbugs.
