This is great news. I've watched for some time on these boards the slow demise of Greek hockey.
I suppose a year is needed to get back in there, but I'd really like to see more than one team advance to the Div 3 tournament now that there are 3 qualifiers.....if these countries want to be participating they need to be encouraged to get back in there. This can only be good for the sport.

2nd meeting with Minister of Sports

The Captain of the National Team Dimitris Kalyvas and the coaches Mirel Dumitrake and Panagiotis Efkarpidis met with Minister of Sports Yannis Ioanidis for the second time before the departure of the National Team for New Zealand.

Present at the meeting was also General Secretary of the Ministry, Stavros Douvis.

The discussion was about the many problems that Ice Hockey is facing in Greece. Once again the Minister of Sports promised to help solve most issues.

Lets see...

When I spoke to Dimitrios after the tournament was over, he mentioned that there are still big issues within Greek ice hockey, and that there is still a long way to go as far as getting the game back on its feet.
I found that to be rather disillusioning, as it had seemed to me that there had finally been some progress made. And maybe there has, but from speaking with a couple of the other players, they were clearly frustrated when the conversation turned to the state of the game within Greece. And even more so when I asked about the arena/rink situation.

Still and all, those boys played with great pride, and they shocked more than a few onlookers with their efforts, and you have to give them credit for the fact that they refuse to lay down and give up.

well, I understand the protest, but why closing the page? The "people in charge of the sport" does not really interested this, I'm sure.

And the only who are now punished are the fan's, who visited the page...... bad....

What's going tohappen with that then? Will there be someone else taking up the slack, or will the four teams included simply not play?

That's probably a fair point, and i think would be rather a great thing if they could successfully pull it off. Dubai is pretty much a hub of international travel anyway, so it wouldn't be too difficult for teams to get there...
It would without a doubt be quite the story if they could jump in and make it successful.

I don't believe the ice rink belonged to the Greek Skating Federation. The structure was part of the 2004 Olympic Games and belongs to either the Greek Olympic Commitee or the General Secretary of Sport. Last two years the rink was operational on temporary basis only for the Greek hockey championships to take place. Apparently due to the financial situation, the General Secretary of Sports is not willing to finance the championships, including reopening the rink for that purpose.

In search of Sponsors and Volunteers, for the World championship in Athens

After receiving a negative response from the General Secretary of Sports declining any financial responsibility and organizational support of hosting the Games in Athens Greece from 13.04.2010 up until 17.04.2010, the president of the ice sports federation Christos Chatziathanassiou met yesterday, Sunday 17th, with the captain of the National Team Dimitris Kalyvas, along with the 2008 and 2009 coach Panagiotis Efkarpidis and two National team players Costas Lembessis and Panagiotis Iatridis. In this meeting it was decided that they would combine forces and organize the Div. ΙΙΙ World championship Group A, on their own. This of course would be the first time in history where the players which will also be on the Roster are organizing the whole event, but then again…..in Greece everything is possible!

The most important thing right now and priority number one, is to find SPONSORS to help fund the championship, because without sponsors the championship will have to be cancelled. Therefore if you are interested in sponsoring this championship and help keep the Ice Hockey dream alive in Greece, along with the development opportunities such an event would have, then please contact us at: gricehockey@hotmail.com or phone us at: 00306974956673 or 00302106849324.

There are many different types of Sponsor packages which can best suit all interests.
Please note that the media sponsor of the games is ERT (Greek Television) which will cover the whole championship.

We are also in great need of VOLUNTEERS in order to help with the organization of the championship and also for during the games. All the athletes from the National team invite you to come and help in any way possible, if you are interested in helping please contact Gioti Efkarpidi at 0030 6977640825.
Very soon we will post a date and place, where a meeting will be held regarding the volunteers and dividing tasks and functions.

The opening ceremonies of the championship are right around the corner, 13.04.2010 to be exact, therefore time is of the essence, so little time, so much to do. We look forward to hearing from you very soon.

Just to let you know. We're (the players) are trying to save the Championship. We're looking for sponsors, we're looking for volunteers and we're doing everything we can to actually have the Championship in Greece. Any ideas are highly appreciated.

I really hope we succeed.

Jimmy,

I wrote an e-mail two days ago, that there could be a possibility to be a Volunteer. Just let me know, if you know more details, and - of course - if you found the sponsors. With money I cannot help the Greece ice hockey, but maybe as a Volunteer. And by the way - I was never been in Greece.....

That's what I can offer you.

Let's hope, that you can solve some problems in the next days.

Jimmy,

Davide's idea of using paypal is a very good idea. I think a lot of hockey fans, specially in North America would find it a lot easier to donate.

I'll try and spread the word around about volunteering through Greeksoccer.com forums, where we have quite a few Greek hockey fans.

The 2010 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS of Athens OFFICIALLY CANCELLED

After various accusations that started a few days after the October elections from Aggelos Aliferis and the denial of the Minister of Sports, Panos Bisaksis to fund the World Championships as he had obligation to do so, and despite the efforts of Dimitris Kalyvas, Kostas Lembessis, Panagiotis Iatridis and Giotis Efkarpidis with the support of the whole National Team, the International Ice Hockey Federation decided yesterday February 1st to officially cancel the 2010 World Championship Div. III of Athens.

This is bad.
Terrible news for Greece, but for everyone else too.

Hopefully this won't be simply cancelled, but that we will see the IIHF approach the other participants in the group to see if one of them can take over the hosting on this short notice.

THE WORLD CHAMPIOSNHIPS DIV.III CANCELLED FOR 2010.

Following the meeting of the IIHF council earlier today it was decided to cancel the World Championship Div.III for the season 2010. It’s the first time in the IIHF history that a World Championship gets cancelled 2 months before the drop of the puck. Also any sanctions against the Hellenic Ice Sport Federation according IIHF Bylaws and Regulations will be discussed and decided by the Council in their meeting in March 2010.

What started so ideal 2 years ago ends with sadness and disgrace.

Icehockey.gr wants to thank Dimitris Kalyvas and Giotis Efkarpidis for reviving Greek Ice Hockey as well as all the boys of the National Team Panagiotis Iatridis, Kostas Lembesis, Giorgos Kalyvas, Orestis Tilios, Lazaros Efkarpidis, Nikos Chatzigiannis, Giorgos Kouleles, Pavlos Kasampoulis, Fivos Kaminis, Themistoklis Lambridis, Alexandoros Valsamas-Rallis, Iasonas Pachos, Viktoras Mateebitsi, Giorgos Fiotakis, Libor Ploutsis, Nikos Papadopoulos, Yannis Ziakas, Yannis Giatagatzidis, Diogenis Souras, Yannis Koufis, Grigoris Apostolidis, Thanasis Kesidis, Kyriakos Adamidis and Giorgos Adamidis for giving it your all.

DESPITE THE ENEMIES OF ICE HOCKEY IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY, YOU NEVER GAVE UP THE FIGHT.

THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT MEMORIES!
