Dwight Helminen, USA (D) Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL) -> JYP Jyväskylä

The contract allows Helminen to sign with an NHL club during the month of July.

JYP signed Dwight's younger brother Lars earlier this summer. Dwight Helminen has represented USA twice in the U20 IHWC's and was the team's best scorer in 2001 U18 IHWC.

So now we got Raipe, Laipe and Dwaipe :-)

Let's add that Meunier is a Frenchman (apparently the captain of the French NT and MVP of Ligue Magnus in 2004&2005). Should he secure a spot in the HPK roster, he would be the second French player to play in SM-Liiga as far as I know. Yorick Treille played 5 games (0+1) with HIFK in the 2002-03 season.

as far as I know too.

Note that Meunier wasn't MVP of Ligue Magnus in 2004 & 2005. He was elected best French player of the league, which is a not so slight difference.

    Good luck to him.

    Shardik, Sharks, Laho,

which teams do you think have made the best signings so far? Which teams seem to have been weakened a bit?

Could you make a top-5 signing list?

This is a pretty subjective matter, IMO, as we can review the teams and their players from lot of different angles. To go and review different teams' strength relations is especially difficult, since the team-buildup tactic is slightly different on each of them. Some clubs try to sign all the best players they can, no matter the cost. Others get cheaper, promising players instead and simply cross their fingers. Some put their money in coaching, gather up a bunch of outcasts and hope the big man in the helm of the team can turn it into a winning machine. There'll likely be a lot of surprises ahead on the road from what it seems at the moment.

A quickly thought-out (in roughly five minutes) top-five signings list (in no particular order):

    Kärpät - Kristian Kuusela
    Jokerit - Ville Leino
    JYP - Tuomas Pihlman
    Tappara - Andre Benoit
    HPK - Kai Nurminen

Like I said, these are pretty subjective matters. Expect a disagreeing opinion coming up soon enough. Actually, I'll be disappointed if there isn't one.

If you wish, Karsten, I can try and conjure up a slightly more throughout opinion on club strength relations later on.

Actually that list looks pretty good. I might substitute Kristian Kuusela with another Kärppä Ondrej Kratena but it's difficult to compare these players at this point. They are different kinds of players. And there are other variables. Kratena has never played outside Czech R. before and Kuusela has only had two good seasons so far in a role that has probably been bigger than what he will get with Kärpät.

Another player that would have made that list is Bryce Lampman (TPS) but he got an NHL contract afterwards. Anyway, I expect that the biggest names are yet to come. Kärpät is still looking for 1-2 defenders (rumors include Mikko Lehtonen and Janne Niinimaa though most find these unlikely) and Jokerit is also looking for enforcements.

As for teams I won't go into to too much depth but I think one of the biggest losers has been HPK (Leino, Jokela, Lahti, Mäkiaho, Schneider, Moravec) and also TPS. I expect HPK to do good as they have a good coaching system (even with J. Jalonen gone) and they have had success with "nameless" squads in the past. TPS on the other hand might be in trouble to get into top 10. The best improver has definitely been JYP Jyväskylä IMO. The returnées Tuomas Pihlman and Antti Virtanen and new guys, brothers Dwight and Lars Helminen are good catches.

That's what I think too. This can't be it. There has to be more to come. Kärpät will sign two or three more players. They need more defense urgently.

All rosters have changed so much I've lost the track. It's time for a new generation to step up.

That remains to be seen. Apart from France, I'm guessing Mestis, Germany, Denmark... they're not exactly franchise. Perhaps, if somebody gets lucky, he may sign a SM-liiga contract or something similar.

If Arturas Katulis makes it to SaiPa he ought to be the first Lithuanian in SM-Liiga. Darius Pliskauskas had a tryout with Blues last preseason but didn't make the team. To be honest I don't expect him to make it (I would be happy if he did though). On the other hand Latvian Pujacs might get a deal with Jokerit (or perhaps some weaker SM-Liiga team later on).

Mikko Lehtonen (D) Rochester Americans, AHL -> Kärpät Oulu

Lehtonen returns after a year in Nashville's organization. He scored the fastest goal ever to start his NHL career. Only 15 seconds into his first shift in his first game. I am very excited about his return.

Jokerit will announce their new players (one foreign, one Finnish) in twenty minutes.

They really should be lucky, as none of them was successful in France (except may be Halttunen who was efficient in his second year). Don't see them sign in Denmark for example. Mestis players at best.
