    Stavanger Oilers

    Established: 2000
    Championships: 0
    2007-08 Season: #7.

Finance: Stavanger was established by Finnish expatriats in 2000. The Finns' interest, however, quickly waned and in 2002, Stavanger Oilers was on the verge of going bankrupt. The club was saved by Tore Christiansen, a financier from the oil industry. In 2004. With Christiansen as the money man, Stavanger has been able to keep a high player salary budget (claimed to even bigger than Storhamar). The budget deficit in 2004 was estimated at no less than NOK 3 mio, but this deficit was covered by Tore Christensen. Since 2004, the finances of Stavanger has gradually become more stable. 1/3 of the club's revenue comes from gate receipts which are high by Norwegian standards, the rest from sponsors, the number of which have grown from 4 to more than 70.

Next year there will be a maximum of 7 foreign players per team-roster in the Get-Liga. The original plan was to reduce the number to 6 players this season, but today the league decided against this. Every team also has to have one Norwegian Goalie dressed in every game.

Frisk-Asker had a player budget of NOK.2.5 mio. last season. In late March, the club announced that it only has raised NOK1.6 mio. for next season. No wonder, that the club had to let players like the Abbotts go.

-Frisk Asker has recently signed two major (in Norwegian hockey) sponsorship deals with Clothing chain Dresmann (3years), and a big 10-year deal with IT company ManagE. These are the biggest sponsorship deals in the clubs history and there will probably be a few new signings within the next couple of weeks. But the thing with Fisk Asker is that they have the best Hockey academy in Norway and can always count on fresh new talents comming up trough the ranks. (source: frisktigers.no)

    Other news from Norwegian hockey.
    - The league has signed its best tv-deal ever with Norwegian TV-2, this is a major step for Norwegian hockey. The deal includes one tv-game a week in the regular season on TV-2 Sport and some kind of "hockeynight" program once a week on national television. They will also show 5-6 games from the National team. The deal is over 3 years. (source: Tv2sporten.no)

    - Patrick Thoresen has signed a two year deal with UFA in the Russian KHL.

    - Former national team player and Memorial cup champion Bård Sørlie has decided to make a comeback for last seasons champions Vålerenga after 3 years on the sideline. Sørlie retired at the age of 28 because of injury problems.

    - Last years womens national team coach and mens national team asistant coach Canadian George Kingston has resigned from his position with immediate affect due to lack of challenges.

    - Talented defenseman Stefan Espeland has signed a one-year profesional deal with Modo Hockey in the swedish Elite league. Modo has now got 5 Norwegians in their senior squad and two Norwegians in their junior system for the upcomming season.

-Last years newcommers and suprise team Lørenskog are at the moment looking like an outsider to the title having signed several meritated players including National team captain Tommy Jacobsen and now this week Keneth Larsen from Vålerenga who scored the deciding goal in this years playoff finals.

    -Some transfer news:

Henric Høglund (F) Stjernen- HC Kosice
Likit Andersson (D) Cardif Devils - Lørenskog
Keneth Larsen (F) Vålerenga - Lørenskog
Darrell Hay (D) Idaho Steelheads (ECHL) - Lillehammer
Tommy Johansen (G) Stavanger - Lillehammer

    Comet:
ended up with another minus on its profit and loss sheet: loss NOK2.6 mio. Aggregate debt: NOK 6.1 mio.

Also continuing problems at Stjernen. The club has a negative quity of NOK2.6 mio and has been forced to separate the elite hockey department as a legal entity.

Things looking good for Sparta: 1,000 season ticket cards sold already, and the club's got a new main sponsor

Stavanger has made an unspecified slash in its budget and raised the price of the season ticket cards by 13%. Last season 470 cards were sold. Target for next season: 500.

I have made a roster update for newcomer Manglerud Star. The Stars easily have the smallest budget in Get-ligaen. Don't believe its higher than NOK1.5 mio. (could be smaller), and I think the team will be cannon fodder for the other teams.

The team has even signed a Bulgarian player (!), namely defenseman, Roman Morgunov of HC Slavia Sofia. Don't know how and why the Stars signed this player. I'm really curious to know.
What I do know is that Morgunov paired with Aleksei Yotov, the scoring leader and MVP of the 2009 IIHF IHWC Div IIB in Sofia, and that he led his team with 40 penalty minutes.

Anyway, this is very good for the Bulgarian national team. They now have two players in the "A pool" leagues. Yotov, of course, is Bulgaria's ultimate star. He actually played in KHL last season for Vityaz Chekhov.

    That's very interesting stuff.

One correction - Manglerud has a kid coming over from the Boston Jr. Bruins. That is an EJHL team (U.S. Junior A, Tier III - the lowest U.S. Junior A level), not an NCAA team.

Morgunov and the other foreigners attended a try-out camp in Oslo in May and was signed based on that. Manglerud will probably be a very weak side next year. Especially after they lost players like Olden (Modo), Djupvik Løvlie (Sparta) and Andersen (Usa).

I.K Comet Halden was not granted a new license for playing in the Get-liga next season and has been moved down to the 2. division due to financial porblems. Next years Get Liga will consist of the 9 remaining teams. The future of hockey in Halden is very uncertain and the club now needs someting like a miracle to stay out of bankruptcy. This also includes the clubs youth department.

This is truly a sad situation for Norwegian hockey, but the one positive thing about this is that the license comitee is finaly doing their job and hopefully avoiding a new scandal like The 2007/2008 Trondheim I.K and last years Furuset.

So Comet will be in Division 2 ? How sad.

Where are Trondheim & Furuset playing? Division 1, or Division 2 ?

Question 1: Yes, either that or nothing. The existence of the club is in real jeopardy.

Question 2: Trondheim IK doesn't exist anymore. Rosenborg (also located in Trondheim) does and it has ambitions to be promoted to Get-Ligaen after next season. Furuset: 1 division.

As I have noted, the financial crisis is also taken its toll on the Norwegian Get-Ligaen.

    Here's some fact:

Vålerenga will cut their budget by 15%. The team was actually invited to participate in the Nordic Trophy, but it can't afford this due to the budget cuts. (Budget now around NOK14-15mio)
    http://www.vg.no/sport/ishockey/arti...p?artid=571876

Stavanger Oilers will cut their total budget from NOK25 mio. to NOK20 mio. (20% cut). Number of players on the Get-ligaen team will be reduced from 22 to 20.

Stjernen's total budget for next season will be halfed (!) from NOK5.4 mio. to NOK2.7mio. The club is still in financial troubles and is no longer being supported by the local authorities. The club will focus on young inexpensive players.

All is well at Sparta Sarpsborg, which is enjoying great support from its fans. Budget is more or less stable from last year (around NOK13-14 mio).

    Update:

If Comet IK does not win the appeal (unlikely that it will), the club will not play in division 2 next year. It's more likely that the club will be put to rest and a new club in Halden be resurrected.

In the absence of Comet, NIHF want to extend to regular season to 48 games (6 x 8), but this proposal has been rejected by the players' association.

Update #2. Comet filed an appeal today. The club also announced that it now has a full financing plan for its debt of NOK6.1 mio., so there's still hope. NIHF has promised that it will deal with the appeal quickly.

    No, it's a mistake by IIHF: http://stats.iihf.com/Hydra/171/IHM1710BUL_33_2_0.pdf

Can't track him though. Believe he plays in Vysshaya.

Любопытно, что лучшим бомбардиром и игроком турнира стал защитник сборной Болгарии Алексей Йотов, выступающий за фарм-клуб подмосковного "Витязя"

Curiously, tournament's top scorer and MVP was the Bulgarian defenseman Alexei Yotov, who plays for Vityaz's farm team.

What club is Vityaz's farm team?

This article explains how Comet plans to get rid of its debt of NOK6.1 mio. The plan looks a little fragile, but the club has high hopes of getting their license. I think they will succeed.

Norway's experienced national team player (and former NHL'er) Anders Myrvold is in trouble with his private life again.

    sad story.

On the Comet saga: NIHF has asked Comet to submit more information. The documentation Comet send was not good enough, the club now has 5 days to come up with something better. A final decision is expected around 10 July.

Any idea when the Get-Ligaen Schedule is spoose to come out now that we know IK Comet has been cleared to play this season?

The schedule has been published weeks ago, but unfortunately NIHF has commissioned the stats handling to a foreign actor (pointstreak.com) which apparently don't think it is important to publish the schedule well in advance.

It's very sad actually. The official site of Get-Ligaen was quite good before pointstreak entered the picture. Comprehensive news coverage, interviews, transfer and roster updates etc. All this is gone. There is no longer a one-stop site and one has to navigate a lot of local papers.

NIFH want to promote Norwegian hockey, but they won't succeed unless they start to take the league coverage more serious.

I'm not sure I'd put that on Pointstreak. The league administrator (or in this case, statistician) can access Pointstreak for an upcoming season quite early to upload a schedule. The fact that the NIHF haven't done this yet speaks more to laziness on their part, or alternatively that they might still be waiting to confirm some dates with teams.

Vålerenga IF has announced their schedule for the upcoming 2009-10 season. They will open their season at home on the 13th of September against Comet IK. This more or less confirms Comet's participation in the GET-Ligaen for next season.

Also Stjernen, Stavanger and Manglerud have also published their schedules on their respective club sites.

Next years Get-Ligaen season format is now clear, the league will consist of 10 teams, with the teams meeting each other five times each during the regular season giving a total of 45 games for the year.

Vålerenga IF has re-signed Knut Henrik Spets for next season, probably their best signing of the off-season. The Trondheim Native had amassed an impressive 47 points in just 36 games last season despite coming of shoulder surgery earlier on in the year. He was even more impressive in the play-offs (17 points in 17 games) and was a key contributer to Vålerenga play-off success last year.

Long time servent of Frisk Asker Johnny Nilsen has been forced to retire to due to a re-occurance of the shoulder injury he picked up last season. The 34-year-old was reccomended by team doctors not to continue playing thus prompting his personal decision to call it quits. Johnny played parts in over 13 season with the Tigers and will be surely missed by the Asker faithful.

    Norway 2009-2010 Get-Ligaen Schedule

The schedule for the 2009-2010 Get-Ligaen is finally out with IK Comet Haden back in the league after an off season of not knowing which league they will be in it or not. As for the defending champions, Valerenga Ishockey will go in as defending champions while the Manglerud Stars winning promotion at the end of last season and as the new boys are in the league replacing Furuset who were just horrible and had one of the worst seasons ever in Norway Ice Hockey History. Regular Season get's underway on September 12 with 3 games with 2 more the next day.

Here's the opening round of games.

Stavanger Oilers VS. Frisk Asker Ishockey
    Storhamar Dragons VS. Stjernen Hockey
    Sparta Sarpsborg VS. Manglerud Stars
Valerenga Ishockey VS. IK Comet Haden
    IK Lillehammer VS. IK Lorenskog

Well Tanman, I can tell you of many teams that had a worse season than Furuset. It was actually the order of the day not too many years ago. Also, it belong to the story that Furuset more or less folded financially early in the season and that many key players left the team.

I don't expect Manglerud to fare much better. With a budget of NOK1.5 mio., 1/10 of Vålerenga and Stavanger, MS will have to make miracles, and Get-Ligaen simply doesn't work this way.

There is no Peter Andersson of Manglerud mentioned in this thread, nor has a player with this name played for Manglerud in recent seasons. If you are thinking of the goaltender Peter Andersson of Comet, he has, as stated, signed with VEU Feldkirch of the Austrian nationalliga (second tier) for one year.
