Yeah, it's a commonly-inquired piece of trivia among hockey fans - only game he missed was 17.10.1954 (Ilves vs. TBK) because he had been shot in the gut the day before. The usual "false" answer people give is 27.3.1984 (Ilves vs. Kärpät). Yes it's true that he was in a severe car accident on his way to the game, but he checked into the hospital only AFTER the game. His leg had three fractured bones and he also broke three ribs (one of which had punctured the lung) but he appeared into the locker room as usual after walking three miles to the rink from the crash scene. Ilves won the game 3-1. Raipe 2+1.

An interesting story has been brought to public now. Kärpät gave Raimo Helminen a Kärpät jersey with #23 today which I thought was odd at the time. Now I have learned that Raipe has played also for Kärpät in his career! In the 1970's Kärpät junior teams often participated in a U16 tournament in Germany where the opposing teams were national teams from various European countries. In 1979 Kärpät invited three Finnish top players from the age class to travel and play with the team in the tourney. One of them was Raimo Helminen. Kärpät finished third in the tournament ahead of Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Sweden.

Helminen's other Finnish clubs are KOO-VEE Tampere and of course Ilves. In SM-Liiga he has only ever played with Ilves.

Looking at recent results, it seems that Espoo is the only team that can/will give Kärpät a run in the playoffs. Pretty consistant play by both teams.

Oh well, to quote the Jokerit (and national team, sigh) coach Doug Shedden: "Last time I checked, it's a f***ing professional hockey league. Anybody can beat f***ing anybody on any given f***ing day." (You can pick a guess if his team had just lost or won).

Kärpät is the top dog at the moment and Blues appears to be trailing close behind, but I wouldn't count teams Tappara, Pelicans and Jokerit out of the race just yet either. The rest however, need to get some serious swing going.

You're right - anything can happne come playoff time but man, Kärpät has been at the top for a long time and doesn't seem to be losing any steam. I guess a hot goalie in the playoff run can make all the difference though. As coach Shedden has to say that - but that "any given day" argument always gets to be a little desparate sounding in my eyes. Does any team have a shot at Kärpät based on the their head to head play over the season? That's always a good indicator of things to maybe come.

Any of Blues, Jokerit and Tappara can challenge Kärpät, but I can't see Pelicans doing well in the playoffs. They just don't have the material for the big games. Their roster is decent for the regular season when there are plenty of games against weaker teams, but not for a series playing against a strong team. Right now I would say that HIFK have better chances to succeed than Pelicans.

I wouldn't say that, especially after spring 2006. I recall several similar arguments made concerning HPK during the past few years too. Sure, the 'Cans may not have the best player material, but I think the coaching is the best in the league. It can take them far.

Also, if the final standings are as they're now, it's a Jokerit-Pelicans standoff on the first round. The teams have met in Hartwall Arena four times during this season. The Score: Pelicans 3, Jokerit 1.

I sternly believe they have all they need to make the upcoming playoffs mighty interesting.

I agree about the four challengers though Blues and Tappara look like the strongest ones right now. Blues has been solid for the whole season which is a first in the club's history. Tappara is probably the hottest team in the league at the moment. They beat Kärpät on Saturday which was Kärpät's only loss in their last 12 games. Jokerit has been a little down lately. Something is wrong as the team is not playing up to their potential. Shedden tried to wake his team up by benching Kim Hirschovits in the HPK game but it didn't really work. They only got a measly 4-3 win (sorry Laho, this is not your year). Pelicans has the coaching and if they have the goaltending too, they can go a long way.

My personal favorite apart from Kärpät is Ilves. I'd like to see Raipe in the medal games one more time.

Eh, I can live with that. I'd be having delusions of grandeur if expected team like HPK to be on the top every damn season. I think I'll just go with the Cans this year. Somehow I find it easy to symphazise them.

How about you? Doesn't all this success to the Northern Kings start making its fans a little... numb?

I would love it if the Pelicans win the gold.....if not the Pelicans, then Jokerit.

Both have goaltenders who, if they get hot at the right time, can give them a chance to knock off stronger teams.

You could think so but everything seems to be different this season. The attendance ratings are the highest since the 2002-03 season and people seem to be more interested in Kärpät than in the last couple of years. Perhaps this is partly due to Jere Karalahti's appearance, and partly to the other new interesting players and Viuhkola's return. Kärpät has also been in the media a fair deal this year on other things too. Charity events and the debut of Kärpät wines and beer have brought exposure to the team. But I think one more big reason why the fans are not bored is the Champions League starting next fall. Kärpät has had a definite plan to grow year after year and the fans have picked up on this. I wouldn't be surprised if Kärpät had the largest average attendance in CHL next year (if the team makes it there, that is).

The thing is that the area where the top 5 teams are most evenly matched are goalies. Of course any one of them can become red hot or a bust in the playoffs but currently each team has a strong man between the pipes.

Kärpät has Tuomas Tarkki and Andy Chiodo. Tarkki was last year's top goalie though many still doubt his skill saying that his success was due to Kärpät's superior team. Chiodo on the other hand led HPK to bronze and many expect him to become Kärpät's starter in the playoffs. This remains to be seen, the hotter goalie will get more starts for sure. Tappara has Mika Lehto who has the most shutouts and the 2nd best winning % in the league. Jokerit has Markkanen who has proved to be strong in the past but this hasn't been his best season. In the last couple of games Puurula has taken his place. Blues's Brückler ties Lehto with 7 shutouts. Antti Niemi was stellar in the early season but has come down a notch since then. Still he is a top goalie in the league.

This is due to an injury, that at least at the moment is believed to be minor. And it better be, as Puurula is NOT a solid goalie, far less stellar.

Well, there you go, stuff does happen...

    JYP Jyväskylä - Kärpät Oulu 3-2 (0-0,2-1,1-1)

I'm still mad I missed seeing any games while in Oulu and Helsinki a couple of weeks ago - what are the odds that both times I was through Helsinki and then the week while spent in Oulu, all the teams would be on the road? Go figure. The nice thing though was seeing all the outdoor hockey being played when coming in to Helsinki from the airport and also at the big outdoor stadium in Oulu (I was there when the snow fell). After the year in Germany with little hockey and lots of rain, it felt pretty good...

I saw that on the SM-Liiga ticker, 45 minutes into the game Kärpät was down, and the Blues were winning their game. I thought to myself, the regular season win might go to the weekend at least. Both games turned around in the third period.

Jan Lundell and Aleksis Ahlqvist, both HIFK goalies were injured and the 20-year-old Jani Nieminen played a great game earning a shutout in his debut in SM-Liiga. The backup was only 16-year-old Frans Tuohimaa!

The young Jani Nieminen got his 2nd career win tonight though now shutout this time. With this loss Kärpät lost their chances in improving the regular season point record (122 points). They can still tie it though if they win both remaining games. Kärpät set the record in 2005-06 season and the team currently boasts the 4 top point season in SM-Liiga history. This feat has of course been aided by the change to 3 point wins four seasons ago after which Kärpät has won the regular season each time.

Blues played very strong today. 2-meter-tall Mikko Koskinen played his first SM-Liiga game and held a shutout, a feat done by Jani Nieminen just days ago for HIFK. The game ended on a sore note though as Oskar Osala was injured in a mindless way by Kim Hirschovits. 20 seconds before the finish Osala had the empty net in front of him and Hirschovits was skating behind him. While Osala guided the puck in holding his stick by one hand Hirschovits slashed Osala's free hand. This completely unnecessary action broke Osala's finger and one of the best rookies of this year's SM-Liiga might miss the playoffs altogether. Hirschovits will surely get some kind of a ban for this. I hope that it is minimum of 5 games.

This game was the 1,000th regular season SM-Liiga game of Erik Hämäläinen! He is the first player to reach this mark in SM-Liiga and perhaps indeed the first player in any league outside NHL. In 21 seasons in SM-Liiga he has only missed 17 games in regular season! He has also played one season in Finnish Division I, three in Elitserien and one in NLA. In SM-Liiga he has represented KalPa and Jokerit in addition to Lukko. Hämäläinen is also world champion, olympic gold medalist and he has been chosen as SM-Liiga's best defender.

An end of an era almost as long as the paleozoic one. A full house left their good byes to Raimo Helminen who played his career's last regular season game. Helminen's SM-Liiga career started with a 7-0 loss to HIFK in September 1982. Among others in that game played such legends as Pekka Rautakallio, Esa Peltonen, Matti Hagman and Stig Wetzell for HIFK and Risto Jalo, Raimo Summanen and Jukka Tammi for Ilves. That gives things a little perspective.
