    SEL - NHL Transfers (update)

The NHL deadline to sign non-drafted European players expired 1 June. Here's an update:

    Tobias Enström
MODO, defenceman, born 1984-11-05, drafted 8th round (239th overall), by Atlanta Thrashers in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
Signed by Atlanta Thrashers for 2 years. Contract is worth SEK 19 mio, according to Aftonbladet (same size as Bäckström)

    Erik Ersberg
HV71, goaltender, born 1982-03-08. Not drafted by the NHL. Signed 1-year by Los Angeles Kings.
Ersberg will be replaced by Stefan Liv who didn't succeed in North America.

    Magnus Johansson
Linköping, defenceman, born 1973-09-04.. Not drafted by the NHL. Signed 1-year by Chicago Blackhawks. Financial terms undisclosed but Johansson has a clause that he can choose to play for Linköping instead of Chicago's farm team. So he may return to Linköping during the season.

    Johan Ryno
Frölunda, forward, born 1986-06-05, Drafted 5th Round (137th overall), by Detroit Red Wings in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. If Ryno makes it to the NHL, he will be the 10th Swede at Detroit Red Wings.

    __________________

Johan Davidsson has been contacted by several NHL clubs but has declined to cross the pond. Instead, Davidsson has signed a new 3-year contract with HV71. "I'm thriving very well in Jönköping and have many friends in the team", says Davidson. "That's very important to me".

    Playoffs in Kvalspellet?
Hockeyligan, the body which manage Elitserien, has forwarded a proposal to HockeyAllsvenskan that will introduce playoffs in the qualification series for Elitserien.
As the system works now, four teams from HockeyAllsvenskan and the two bottom teams from Elitserien play a 10 games qualification series with the two top teams being promoted to next year's Elitserien.
According to the new proposal, top 6 from HockeyAllsvenskan will play a 10 games qualification series (QS). Then there will be two playoffs series (7 games) where #1 in the QS will play #12 in Elitserien and #2 in the QS will face #11 in Elitserien. The winners of these series will play in next season's Elitserien.
The proposal obviously works to the advantage of the two teams from Elitserien, and it remains to be seen whether the teams from Hockeyallsvenskan will accept the proposal.

New Icing rule, 4 ref system introduced
The Swedish hockey federation will introduce a North American style icing rule next season in Elitserien: from next season, the team that play the puck to icing can not substitute players. The aim is to make the game less obstructive. Elitserien will also introduce a 4 referee system.

I hope not. Swedish sports have always thrived with a promotion/relegation system. Look at Swedish football where there is arguably as much if not more money involved as in ice hockey. The bottom teams get relegated without a qualification series. Thus there is always movement between the different divisions and I feel that that is keeping the teams competitive and focused.

    Agree.

Not surprisingly, the teams in Allsvenskan seem to be opposed to the proposal.

HockeyAllsvenskan suggest an expansion of Elitserien to 14 teams. Team #14 will be directly relegated and replaced by #1 in Allsvenskan, while team #13 in ELitserien will play a 7-games playoff series vs #2 in Allsvenskan.

That's the solution favoured by the teams in Allsvenskan. HockeyAllsvenskan might though consider Hockeyligan's proposal if Elitserien is expanded to 14.

Frölunda's manager Mats Ahdrian said in an interview last week that he'd only support an expansion to 14 team if the the two expansion team were from Denmark and Norway.

I agree with him, but not the next three years or so. I'd also support Finnish clubs in Elitserien. How about the Scandinavian Elite League :)

Finally. It's a great addition since team no longer can shoot the puck down the ice and make long line changes that kills the time and tempo of the game.

    In our dreams, mate ;-)

To be honest, I find it quite suspicious that Frölunda and Färjestad, above all teams, are playing the drums most heavily for expansion with Norwegian and Danish teams. Frölunda and Färjestad are arguably not only the most profitable but also the most finance oriented teams in Elitserien, and they should know better than anyone that the Danish and Norwegian teams are non-marketable. So its very difficult not to reach the conclusion that Frölunda and Färjestad are playing a double game: the simple truth is that they don't want any expansion of Elitserien.

Well both Gothenburg and Karlstad are close to Oslo. I don't think they would mind having a competitive team close to them. Especially Norwegians with their money.

I hate Malmö, how the organization is run, their arrogance, and their playing style, but I cursed the day they were relegated to Allsvenskan since I think having team in the large urban areas of Sweden is important. It also killed the tiny chance of having a team from Copenhagen in Elitserien for many years.

I don't think we can count on any cross border expansions for a while. But the chances are increasing since there's talk about Elitserien being organized as a professional organization, without connections to the clubs.

Well, you also have to consider the state of hockey in Norway. Money, media and attendance wise the sport isn't exactly on the rise.

    Surovy lost for Linköping

Tomas Surovy, one of the leading goalscorers in Elitserien last season, has signed with Phoenix Coyotes.

Surovy, who played for Luleå last season, recently signed with Linköping. As Surovy was expected to center the top scoring line, Linköping has suffered a severe blow in the preparations for next season.

Phoenix Coyotes signing of Surovy is in general not legal under the IIHF-NHL transfer agreement. The NHL's deadline for signing European players under contract expired 15 June. What made it possible in Surovy's case was that Surovy ensured a release clause in his contract with Linköping. Under the Swedish hockey regulations, the release clause had to be exploited before the season starts. Since Vladimir Orsagh's NHL departure in 2005/06, release clauses are no longer valid during the Swedish season. So Surovy had a small window of opportunity. If he doesn't make it to Coyotes' NHL team though, he might return to Linköping in September, shortly before the season starts.

Justin Morrison has signed with Frölunda, played with Modo last season. Quite the surprise. Don't think anyone expected it.

Yeesh! Frölunda sure seems determined not to repeat last season's embarassment. You think the addition of so many new players (Ahonen, Holmqvist, Soderholm, Mantyla, Nordqvist, Morrison) will pay off? We shall see.

Honestly? I'm hoping, but the main reason they flunked last season was, imo, because there were too many new players.

Quite stupid mistake IMO. Now the other clubs know that SAIK is negotiating with Novak. Since SAIK has a relatively low budget the bigger teams may feel tempted to contact Novak and top SAIK's bid. A real risk since the league is short of good defencemen. To make matters worse, this should be too hard to figure out for Novak either. The longer he waits, the greater the probabilty he recieves an improved offer from either SAIK or another club.

    FINANCES - ELITSERIEN Part I

Elitserien is experiencing a golden period these years. Attendance is the higest in Europe and still increasing as more new, modern arenas with bigger capacity are built. Here's a brief status report on the finances of the Elitserien clubs. I will compare the financial numbers with my last report back in 2005.

    SEK 100 = $15

    1. FÄRJESTAD BK
Färjestads BK is the richest clubs of any sport in Sweden. In 2006-07, Färjestad produced a turnover of SEK 128 mio. ($19.2 mio). Compared with 2004-05, surplus more than doubled to SEK 3.4 mio, and FBK's own capital is now SEK 78.2 mio (up from SEK 69 mio. in 2005).

    2. MODO HOCKEY
2006-07 was certainly a glorious season for MODO. Not only did MODO win the championship for the first time in nearly 30 years, the club's turnover also more than doubled to SEK 125 mio. The construction of the brand new arena, Swedbank Arena, partly financed by Peter Forsberg, was a major reason for the vastly improved finances. In 2004-05, MODO had a deficit of SEK 1.6 mio. In 2006-07, with a surplus of SEK 8 mio, the situation was completely reversed, and MODO had the second biggest surplus of all Eliteserien clubs. MODO's own capital is now SEK 15 mio, up from SEK 6.8 mio in 2004-05. It's now the 4th richest club in Elitserien

    3. LINKÖPING HC
As Linköping reached the finals for the first time ever, it should come as no surprise that the club's finances were improved considerable. Linköping produced a turnover of SEK 115 mio, up from SEK 106 mio in 2004-05 where the club reached the semifinals. This generated a surplus of SEK 5 mio (up from SEK 3 mio in 2005-06) and an increase in own capital from SEK 4.3 mio to SEK 10 mio.

    4. FRÖLUNDA HC
Frölunda had a dismal season in 2006-07, barely avoiding the relegation series. As Frölunda missed the playoffs, the turnover deterioriated somewhat from SEK 132 mio in 2005-06 to SEK 114.5 mio. Likewise the surplus dropped from SEK 19.7 mio to SEK 4.7 mio. Since the own capital increased to SEK 65 mio, Frölunda is still the second richest club of all sport in Sweden.

    5. HV71
HV71's turnover in 2006-07 was in the range SEK 110-120 mio (vs SEK 104 mio in 2005-06). As HV71 consistently plays for a capacity crowd (7,038), the club should perhaps consider increasing the capacity of Kinnarps Arena. HV71 remains the most profitable club in terms of surpluses (this season SEK 11 mio, largely constant from 10.3 mio in 2005-06). HV71 thus also has the fastest growing own capital. The own capital increased from SEK 21 mio in 2006 to SEK 30 mio in 2007.

    6 BRYNÄS IF
Financially, Brynäs IF was another club that benefitted from the construction of a new and bigger arena (Läkerol Arena (Cap. 8,265). Brynäs' turnover exactly reached the SEK 100 mio mark. Surplus increased nearly 10-fold from SEK 530,000 in 2004-05 to SEK 5 mio. Own capital is in the range SEK 3-6 mio compared with SEK 630,000 in 2005.

    7. TIMRÅ IK
Timrå's turnover in 2006-07 was SEK 87.4 mio compared with SEK 75 mio in 2005-06. This generated a surplus of SEK 2.6 mio compared with SEK 900,000 in 2005-07. Own capital is now (2007) SEK 8 mio compared with SEK 6.1 mio in 2006

    8. LULEÅ HF
Turnover 2006-07: SEK 75 mio, an increase from SEK 64 mio in 2005-06. The result, however, was rather disappointing as Luleå only produced a surplus of SEK 300,000 (down from SEK 833,000 in 2005-06). Own capital is still slightly above SEK 2 mio.

    9. MORA IK
Mora has the smallest arena in Elitserien (4,500). Turnover in 2006-07 was SEK 70 mio, surplus SEK 3.2 mio (vs SEK 3.8 mio in 2004-05. Own capital has increased from SEK 5.6 mio in 2005 to a healthy SEK 12 mio in 2007.

    10. Djurgården IF
Djurgården is the only Elitserien club in financial troubles and has been for a number of years. In 2006-07, Djurgården produced a new deficit of SEK 5 mio. The clubs own capital is negative SEK ÷4,5 mio.

    11. Skellefteå AIK
Skellefteå returned to Elitserien in 2006-07 with a turnover of SEK 62 mio. This generated a surplus of SEK 2 mio and the club's own capital doubled to SEK 4 mio.

Note: As Södertälje is a newcomer to Elitserien 2006-07, the list onlu includes 11 teams

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As can be seen from the list, Luleå HF and Djurgården IF fared less well (and in DIF's case very bad) than the other Elitserien teams. This is partly explained by the fact that Luleå and Djurgården are the only clubs in Elitserien that don't own their arena.

The Elitserien clubs are finally turning to ice practise these days. Regardless of the facts that the Summer holidays are almost over and that the Summer has finally come to Scandinavia after it has been pouring for more than a month, the public interest has been enormous.

Monday morning, 7 August, Timrå had its first ice practise. The practise attracted no less than 2,500 who came to watch the new coaches Challes Berlung and Per Nygårds as well as a score of Timrå's new players, incl. Mika Pyörälä and Fredrik Hynning.
2,500 may not seem a lot by North American standards, so perhaps a little more information might help: Timrå's home arena, EON Arena was nearaly half full, and since the population of Timrå county is 18,000, more than 1/10 of the local population watched the ice practise!

On Wednesday, Linköping also attracted a relatively big crowd to watch the team's first ice practise. The practise took place at LHC's old arena, Stångebro Ishall (cap. 4,600). 2,000 fans showed up, and the arena was also nearly half filled.
