Aldair, I can assure you that the USSR did play before 1954. Unfortunately, we have very little precise information about the games they played. In those years (before 1954), USSR were basically preparing for entering the international stage at a competitive level as possible.

What we do know is that the first USSR national team was assembled in March 1948 to play three games in Moscow vs LTC Prague. Every game was attended by nearly 30,000. Results: 6:3, 3:5, 2:2.

In the following years, USSR gained experience by playing unofficial games vs Polish, Czechoslovakian, and East German sides (and some claims also Finnish and Swedish teams).

I have also read that USSR planned to participate in the 1953 World Championships in Switzerland but that they pulled their team after their best player, Vsevolod Bobrov was injured. *)

As for the games vs Norway in 1953, I am only skeptical about the dates. According the Norwegian Hockey Federation, the games in Oslo were played in Autumn 1953 - not in March. But they do not provide any precise dates, neither do they give us the results.

But USSR's visit to Oslo attracted much interest in the Swedish media. As this was USSR's first visit to the West, there were a lot of rumors about the Soviet team. However, the Swedish press wasn't too impressed by what they saw. USSR basically played like a bag of nuts, or as one newspaper reported, like a Swedish 2nd division team. 1/2 year later, USSR won the world championship!

Norway was also the first Western country to be invited to play in USSR. That was indeed in March 1953. The official game, however, came to nothing as Stalin died just as the Norwegian team arrived at Moscow. A period of mourning followed, and that is another reason why I do not think team USSR visited Oslo later that month.

However, during their visit to Moscow, Norway did play an exhibition game vs USSR. The game wasn't given the 'pomp and circumstance' planned for the official game that was cancelled, but it was attended by no less than 30,000 spectators. USSR won 4:1.

What is really interesting about this game is that the USSR team (and the spectators) were totally fascinated with the Norwegian goaltender, Per Dahl's modern goalie glove. They hadn't seen such one before.

After the game, USSR officials asked whether they could borrow the glove. In a matters of hours, they had taken photos and made precise drawings of the glove with such dedication that it was completely picked to pieces.

So this tells us something about the state of USSR hockey as late as March 1953. One year later USSR beated Canada 7:2 and won the world championship. This is what I call fast progress.

    ---------
*) Had USSR participated in the 1953 World Championship, we would have faced the awkward situation that two teams pulled their teams because of the deceases of their political leaders. Czechoslovakia left the World Championship because the Czechoslovakian president Klement Gottwald died. As Stalin died just as the IHWC opened, USSR would have followed suit. Canada and USA already boycotted the tournament.

Just to follow up on #18, here 3 years after:

Before the USSR entered the Worlds in 1954, the team tested its strength in many games. This is wellknown. Officially the team wasn't called USSR, but the combined team of Moscow - virtually the same thing since the teams from Moscow dominated Soviet hockey.
    Coaches: Chernyshev &Egorov (1949-52), Tarasov (1953)
This is not a complete list, but its a good start:

    1948
    26.02.1948, Moscow, "USSR" - LTC Praha 6-3 (2-0, 2-3, 2-0)
    28.02.1948, Moscow, "USSR" - LTC Praha 3-5 (0-2, 2-0, 1-3)
    02.03.1948, Moscow, "USSR" - LTC Praha 2-2 (1-0, 1-1, 0-1)

    1949
    07.03.1949, Moscow, "USSR" - Poland 7-3 (2-0, 2-1, 3-2)

    1950
Apparently no games, probably due to the fatal aircrash on 5. January near Sverdlovsk, where VVS Moscow lost 11 of their team members, some of which were among the best players in USSR, e.g. Yuri Tarasov (A. Tarasov's brother), Robert Shulmanis, and Mellups, the goaltender of the national team. On the flight were also the famous Czech hockey and tennis player, Zdenek Zigmund, who also played for VVS.

    1951
    07.03.1951, Moscow, "USSR" - Poland 9-1 (4-1, 3-0, 2-0)
    08.03.1951, Moscow, "USSR" - Poland 8-1 (4-0, 2-0, 2-1)

    09.05.1951, East Berlin, DDR - "USSR" 2-18 (0-8, 2-5, 0-5)

    1952
    09.11.1952, East Berlin, DDR - "USSR" 1-13 (0-2, 1-6, 0-5)

    12.11.1953, Bratislava, Czechoslovakia - "USSR" 4-6 (2-2, 1-2, 1-2)
date missing, Oslo, Norway - "USSR"
date missing, Moscow, "USSR" -Norway 4-1

Well, it would have been good for team morale to be able to repeatedly punch the "communist fascists" from East Germany in the mouth by 20 goals....

Not, sure, but those kind of crowds weren't unusual. I think the photo below is from one of the games USSR played vs DDR in 1951.
