    Israel Israel 'A' League 2013-2014

Once again, awful news in that the regular season will consist of only six games for each team.

There will be a north division and a south division. The teams only play divisional opponents, which means that each team only plays three opponents.....also awful.

The top two teams from each division will make the playoffs. Playoffs will be held in Metula on the regulation sized rink.

The south division will play all of its games in the new but tiny rink in Holon, allowing for only 4-on-4 play......also awful. The north division plays its games in Metula, which will, in my opinion, give those teams an advantage in the playoffs.

Yes, I understand that the Israeli federation is working hard to develop the sport at the grassroots level wih children and juniors. That is a wonderful, and crucial, thing to do. There is very limited ice time for games and practices, so I understand a short regular season for the two mens' leagues.

With all of that said, the federation must, in my opinion, do a better job of expanding the regular season for the mens' leagues. The mens' leagues simply MUST improve their level of play - by quite a bit - for Israeli hockey to truly thrive. Six games per team will not assist in this regard, and doesn't even meet IIHF minimum regulations. People in Israel will not become, or stay, hockey fans if there is not a domestic league or leagues with a decent level of play and a regular season of realistic length to watch and follow.

With an eight team top league, every team should be playing every other team twice, for a fourteen game regular season, and every team should get at least fourteen practices. This should be the minimum standard for the nation's top hockey league.

    Very disappointing.

Note that the league has changed its name to the Israeli Senior A League.

Refereeing is at an all time low. In Kfar Saba v Bat Yam game, Kfar Saba received a double minor for a high stick/High Hit on a Bat Yam people, which caused a nasty cut and game ending injury to Bat-Yam player, which should have been a 5 minute major and game misconduct. Anyways, Bat Yam scores 1 minute into powerplay (making the game 4-3 Bat-Yam) and for some reason, the double minor is gone.....

Haifa needs to get some young blood into its team, or one of the original Israeli clubs still existing will disappear. Most of the team is anywhere from their mid forties through their mid fifties at this point. They simply can't compete anymore.

not many hockey players in or near haifa, plus they won't recruit many non-russian players.

There are plenty of young Russians in Israel........none play hockey? It's not as if Haifa even has a rink, so whether they are from Haifa wouldn't really matter.

Not sure. Looking at Haifa roster now, I've seen their additions have been added. Can't Vouch that everything there is correct. Teams like Kfar Saba and Rishon have not been updated.

Bat Yam beat Rishon 3-2, and beat Nes Ziona 8-0.

Rishon beat Nes Ziona 6-1, & Kfar Saba beat Nes Ziona 10-2, so the new club is definitely taking its lumps.

Rishon way behind in games played, another game postponed yesterday. 2nd Playoff spot will come down to Rishon vs Bat Yam game on January 17, unless Rishon gets 2 loses before that game. North playoff teams are set, and no surprises.

stats and roster are coming together on the Israhockey website. Most games have stats, all rosters are complete.

Rishon beat Kfar Saba 7-3. Rishon, Kfar Saba, and Bat-Yam appear to be equal. Gonna go down to the wire.

I took a moment to look at a map of Israel... found most of the towns that Israeli teams come from: almost all are neighbourhoods of Tel Aviv (or could be considered bedroom communities of Tel Aviv).... exceptions are the Metulla teams, Haifa, and Maalot, which I assume refers to Ma'alot-Tarshiha (a community halfway between Haifa and Metulla)?

In any case, are most players actually from the Tel Aviv area, and more specifically the neighbourhoods the teams represent, or are the club names more of a nod to the country's major city?

It's hard to say without checking where each player lives. For the most part, I think most players play for the cities they live in, with the few that live in other cities that join them. I think the northern city teams 95% of the players play for the city they live in.

At the beginning of February, the Israel national team played the Israel national U18 team in Metula. Obviously the game only included those players in Israel, not any dual-nats or overseas pros. The U18's did better than expected, but the mens' nats did win 7-3.

A rare bit of Israeli TV coverage of hockey....here is a news feature on HC Bat Yam. I can't translate, but it appears to show everything about the club from kids up through the main team in the Israeli A-League. About 3.5 minutes long.

Here's a game winning shootout goal by Bat Yam vs. Haifa at the new rink in Holon. You can see just how tiny the rink is. Metulla remains the only regulation size rink in Israel.

We'll see if games will still be played there next season. For the upper playoffs, all games are in Metula, and that's how it should be.

If 2 team have the smae ampunt of points, the team on top should be the one who won the game between them...
Because there was 2 games between them, one won by each team, we take those 2 teams in a new "sub group" with only the games between them...

Now in that case, here is the standings for places 2 and 3:

    Horses Kfar Saba -2GP 1W 0OTW 0L 1OTL - 4 Points
    Maccabi Metulla - 2GP 0W 1OTW 1L 0OTL - 2 Points

Got the standings from hawkshaifa.com which uses GD as tiebreaker. And anyways, the likelihood of a tie in the final standings is close to 0
