    Israeli League 2011-2012

Use this thread for discussion, news and results.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The number of teams and format has not been finalized yet.

In other news, HC Metula and Maccabi Metula have merged.......kind of. They will maintain separate teams in the Israeli League, but will operate under, and train youth as a part of, the same school - the Canada-Israel Hockey School (CIHS).

Maccabi Metula played an exhibition match against Ice Time Herzliya, with Maccabi winning 9-2.

Maccabi will play an exhibition game against the Haifa Hawks on September 23, 2011.

Game between Maccabi Metulla and Haifa Hawks ended with the score 4-0 to Maccabi Metulla.
It wasn't a full game, it began as a practice of both teams and ended with a half an hour game between the teams.

We are now trying to arrange a friendly match with Nes-Ziona Dragons, no date yet.

    As for the league:
After the changes that happen yesterday the management is working hard to get the league going.
As it seems now the date to begin the league is October 28th, with another division and at least 18 games for each team, although this is not final yet.

Congrats Marc for your efforts on behalf of Israeli hockey. Although I'm not nearly as involved as I was in the past, I'll still be keeping in contact with the guys in the leagues. The only name that I'm familiar with is Gussin's , and I'm really pleased that he'll have a key role in moving forward.

I said last year that a changing of the guard was needed, and I'm glad to see that it has finally taken place.

Kudos to Sergei Matin for the incredible amount of work and effort he's put in over all these years, and sincere best wishes for him in whatever endeavours he'll be involved in, in the future. Hopefully, he'll offer assistance and guidance to the people who will be running the show now.

If all of the hockey people in Israel would work together, and if there would be more major Russian support [ particularly financial support, as opposed to just the from the North American side, for the most part ] the sport could grow by leaps and bounds. An absolutely essential ingredient would be a serious group of investors to finally build a second full size rink, which could and should be used for the development of hockey and figure skating in Israel.

    Lygafe.

I've heard from a few people that there will be 11 teams this year. Is that True?

I have not heard as to what the final composition of teams will be, or the final decision in terms of the number of games per team, formats, etc.

There is an effort to set up 2 divisions, 8-10 teams in the top one, 4-6 teams in the second. The league should start early in November.

Will the IRHA teams be included in the second division?

I've been very, very busy at work and at home, and haven't corresponded with anybody in about a month to get any answers.

I don't think the IRHA will play in any of the leagues, but some of their players are playing with the clubs that do play.
News about the league will be announced soon, as isralex mentioned there is an effort to make two divisions but it's not final yet.
Let me just remind you that we only got a change of management and the management before has left a lot of debts that needs to be issued.
But you'll get some good news about the league soon.

Other than that I'd like to let you know that the Nigerian National team plans to come to Israel in the near future for a week to have a camp in Metulla.

I'd have to think it would be Nigerian inline, though maybe they're looking to get some exposure to ice hockey?

They've contacted us so they can have an Ice-Hockey camp in Metulla. They are having some issues getting visas to Israel but as soon as they are cleared to come they will come. We're looking forward to host them and teach them hockey.

Without getting into details that I have been asked not to divulge yet, my understanding is that the start of the league this season may be delayed a while.

Hopefully the good news that Ben alluded to in his post of 10/25/11 will come sooner rather than later.

League is scheduled to start at the 11th of November, still waiting for some teams to give they're final roster, so it's not final yet.
Maccabi Metulla will be playing a friendly match against Rishon Devils on the 4th of November.

Ben, now that we have new management, can we finally get the rosters for each team so we can do a proper league thread here like we do for the other leagues? If you can list each team with its roster, I will try and work on a season preview.

Also, any video going to be taken of the friendly with Maccabi & the Ice Devils?

Sure thing, I'll post the rosters as soon as they'll be available.

Maccabi vs. Ice Devils might change the dates, cause the Canada Centre don't want to stay open after 19:00 during this date, so we might reschedule it, I'll keep you posted.

Is there a good chance the 11th will indeed be the start to the season? Rosters and a Season preview would be awesome!

It's a chance but can still be delayed since we're still waiting for all the teams to fully sign up all their players.

Two preseason games took place on 11/11/11 at Metula rink.
    Rishon 2 - Bat Yam 6:6
Maccabi Metula defeated Rishon 1 - 8:6 (not sure about exact result of the last game, but Maccabi has won)

Let's keep the team names straight......

There are the Rishon Ice Devils (whom I assume you are calling Rishon 1), and now apparently another Rishon club. Do you know the name that the second club will be using?

It's a similar situation with the Bat Yam clubs.......there are the Bat Yam Icebergs (Bat Yam 1) and also Bat Yam / Holon Jet Turtles (Bat Yam 2).

    Hi Marc,

The second Rishon team is Ice Devils 2. It represents the same Rishon Devils hockey club. Probably, next season we'll have some "re-branding", but this season it's just two Ice Devils teams. So, to keep the things simple lets refer to them as Rishon 1 and Rishon 2. As far as I know, there is 11 teams in the league. Eight from the last year, plus Rishon 1, Rishon 2 and Afula. Though I don't have any info on the last one.

With all due respect, that is complete BS that rishon devils have two teams. There needs to be some sort of name change. Also, any news or rosters?

I don't see it as "BS" - if the club has enough players to ice two teams, then so be it. They should give each team a different name, though, to distinguish them.

Ben has promised to provide rosters. Once he does, I'll preview each team based on what I know of the various players.

Hopefully we can get the final number of teams, and number of games per team, shortly.

Also, IMO the israhockey.co.il or federation website needs updating and constant updates to it's content. If someone knows the webmaster of the site and can pass it along, that would be great.

That Bat Yam roster looks incomplete unless they only have 2 lines.

Why didn't Nes Ziona join? Anybody?

Don't know, I think they didn't have enough players. They're putting a Jr. team in the Jr. league.
We know that the games are not religious friendly, but it's hard to make it for games during weekdays, as people from the Tel-Aviv area have jobs to attend to.

Funny thing is that Holon's jerseys say 'Bat Yam' on them, and the club formerly had been designated as being in Lod and later Rishon before Holon/Bat Yam.

Ultimately, the league would get a giant boost if a big sports club like Maccabi Tel Aviv entered a team using their name & colors. Any of the big soccer or basketball clubs doing that would be an enormous publicity boost.

For what I read hockey moviment in Israel is really active, many (too much?) teams, constant partecipation in Continental Cup and World Championships and now the possibility of sport-giant Maccabi to enter in the league....Main handicap is the lack of ice if I understand well....Definitely Israel needs more rinks
