Other than qualification and making countries feel special do these rankings hold much purpose? I find them as useless as Fifa's rankings. The only significance I can see is for Division qualifications.

Both my national teams I support Argentina and Canada are number 1 to, it doesn't make me as a fan feel anything special. Both national teams never won their best respective tournaments when they were considered best in their year.

Thanks, fixed. Also Armenia was finally fined for it's consistent rules violations - and now has the last place in the rank with 200 points only.

Congrats to the Swiss, that was one giant step forward! And to other nations that made great improvements in the rankings! (Japan remains the same, and misses out on hosting the first round of Olympic qualifiers, that's gonna be tough.) Hopefully we'll be seeing some new countries in the rankings next year!

Top teams are able to stand against each other and win a medal.
Honestly speaking I can't imagine Swiss to fight against top teams on equal basis, to win a medal.
And Slovakia. Yes, they were awful this WC. But we all know they have problems with national federation, coaches, players. With their best players and a good main coach they are really top team.

Not physically possible if Mongolia compete and it is still a 6-team league. Next season, Mongolia will have 285 points from previous years, Greece will have 180 points. If it is a 6-team league, the maximum points difference you can get (i.e. 1st compared to 6th) is 100 points. Therefore, the best Greece could do if Mongolia turn up is get within 5 points of them.

The 2009 IIHF Men's World Ranking has been finalized. The only thing that seems srange to me is why Slovakia has 2,635 points instead of 2,620 and France has 2,325 insted of 2, 340.

In the Pre-Ranking they had 1680 and 1440 consecutively, then took 10th place and got 940 points (1680+940 = 2620), while FRA took 12th place benn awarded by 900 points (1440+940 = 2340).
Maybe there were a mistakes in the pre-ranking however.

    Impressive jump by France!

Hopefully, with them in the IHWC and staying up 2 straight years will help them out in their development.

Because the ranking is calculated by the result of last for 4 years, while Greece and Mongolia played on two last tournaments only.

There is no such thing as a "Bad Hockey Market"
There are, however, several markets with "Bad Hockey"

I wonder why they still include Greece and Ireland if they're barred from competing.

Ireland has no rink or league and Greece, has/had a league but their rink was not suitable.

Interesting to compare long-term (2004 vs. 2014)... Biggest movements:
    +12 Norway
    + 9 Mexico
    + 7 Korea
    + 6 France
    ...
    - 7 Japan and Bulgaria
    - 8 DPR Korea
    - 9 Ukraine
    -10 China

Japan's drop is mainly due to them not being directly qualified to the IHWC as an Asian qualifier each year.
Norway has made impressive progress, as has Korea (going from a DivI-II elevator nation to staying in DivIA now).

Bulgaria's hockey has visibly stagnated, DPR Korea simply hasn't improved while those around them have.
Ukraine is suffering from the retirement of their stronger, older Soviet-trained players and are now playing more to their own level.
China.... well... what can we say here? They're showing what happens when you give up funding a sport.
