View Full Version : IHWC Draft 2005 - Discussion Thread
Looks like I'm in the group of death!
Pihinalle, Hungarianfan and Nyi are big competition.
That's ok though, I THRIVE on a challenge!! :023:
The groups will be slightly changed now that Brims has signed up.
Phew! My brief flirtation with unspeakable odds has ended. :003:
No, wait. It's Skratch, Brims and Da Silva. Damn, another tough group.
Don't be too hard on me, ok guys?
Aww.. now I'll probably have to play with my brains since there's no games by Team Finland (or Team Slovakia either) scheduled for my preliminary group, thus I cannot just pick up my favorite players .. (which has been proofed to be working strategy in my previous drafts) :blah:
NQ, trying to get into comfortable position of the underdog? :devileek:
NQ, trying to get into comfortable position of the underdog? :devileek:
WHAT!!?!? Me??? :083:
NQ, with 417 posts, you are top-seeded (i.e. the favourite among the rookies.
Nice try, but you can fool the other contestants in your group. :003:
This could happen only to me :005: ...right after posting my roster
Team Tigger roster for the 1st of May
Martin Havlat CZE
...
I noticed that Havlat is not even in the final Czech roster :blah:
PS. Good luck Criz! :023: ...though I don't think you need a lot of that playing against someone like me :stupid: :o
Brims:
Completely different players :)
Good luck! :023:
On a sidenote:
You are my opponent and hence must be destroyed.
(sorry, it's the old Canadian hockey competitiveness kicking in)

pff.. I'm a total noob :036:
GL Tigger!
I've noticed a few people selected Martin Havlat for the CZE team.
I was under the impression he didn't make the final roster.
Is that true?

Martin Havlát goes to Austria! But only as a tourist.
I think could be a good idea post in this thread all injured players appearing in official rosters...
i know these:
Germany: Ustorf, Kolzig,Sturm
Czech Republic: Havlat
Belarus: Salei

It seems that jokos_31 has picked Olli Jokinen. I have protected Olli.
Just too bad for Jokos. Olli doesn't count in his roster.
Midway results before tonights games:
Dancan - Xmarchello 2-0
Lukasz - Joki1937 4-0
Jazz - nyi 12-0
Hungarianfan - Acroni 0-8
Pihinalle - Jokos 3-4
Roots - GX 4-6
Skratch - da Silva 4-14
Brimsek - Nyquil 9-10
---------------
P.S. Sammy has posted a roster but your team only plays tomorrow. Be sure to post a roster for 1 May if you haven't already done this. :002:
cool, just hoping Jokinen wont score :) if he wont then Ill win anyway if Gaborik scores [assists] and do anything else
Too bad so many people didn't care or wasn't able to post their rosters :087:
In the "traditional" format it wouldn't matter that much, but one-on-one competition it's very boring if your opponent doesn't post.
just a thought, but with several brother acts [sedins, hossa] and non brother acts [jokinen..jussi and olli] maybe you should indicate which one your posting ? :smart:

Hehe that's a nice advice roots :023:
But then again if we just let them post the lastname they will not get any points.. Mwahahahaa! :devileek:
edit: yes I'm evil but it's the part of the game to find out what names there's on the roster :p
I have a question and a declaration.
First - how'z hockey in Portugal?
Second - I offer a drink of your choice to every IHG member who comes to the next WC if Team Canada allows more than four goals in any of their remaining games in this WC.

Hockey in Portugal is dead some years ago after a short-life.
You can read this interview (http://www.hockeyarchives.info/interviews/calhau-ang.htm) from wonderful Marc site with Ronald Calhau, father of POR hockey.
The 2001 championnat (http://www.hockeyarchives.info/Portugal2001.htm) (at what i know the only disputed)
The only site i know about ice hockey in Portugal (http://diabosgcc.tripod.com/index3_ice.htm), no updated since 2001 but still on net.
About other declaration, i accept your challenge....

I thought that all those protected players can´t be picked by anybody else but the person which made him protected at first and the people before him, when the player was´t protected yet. Or I got it wrong?....How can be Jágr chosen 4 or 5 times then and 3 or 4 times protected? There are even other protected players chosen more than once. For example Zetterberg. :scratchhe
BC, in this contest we play against each other one on one. The first person in the pairing to post their roster gets to protect one guy.
You are playing against Krisz this round and you posted first so you chose to protect one guy. When Krisz posts his roster he can not chose that guy.
Does this make sense?
jokos_31

It seems that jokos_31 has picked Olli Jokinen. I have protected Olli.
I am newbie here and i dont know the rules well.
BTW i win you 4-3?

what a comeback by Alfredsson! thanks Tigger for the duel!
Thanks to you too, Criz :). You would have beaten me even if I hadn't chosen Havlat in my roster  (that darned Alfie :blah: )
@ Acroni
You have picked SEDIN for tonights game vs Denmark, but which Sedin? Henrik or Daniel?
.
It's not only Sedin - Acroni also has picked, and protected, Jokinen from team Finland: Jussi or Olli??
Hehe for the first time in my life I cheered for Alfie last night - and it worked.. Although I would have loved to see Sweden lose against Ukraina :devileek:
And darn Axelsson was only eating popcorn amongst the spectators instead of scoring for me.. :p
Yes! Now we're officially (since DC says so) The Group of Death, guys - how cool is that? :drinker-g :crazylaug
By my math I'm down 6-3 to Skratch after 2 games.
It's up to you Alfie! Don't let me down :)
Interim scores before tonights games:
Dancan - Jogi1937 4-8 tonight: DC: Alfredsson, Zetterberg, H. Sedin; Joki: None)
Lukasz - Xmarchello 1-0 tonight: Lukasz: H. Sedin; D. Sedin, Zetterberg, Alfredsson; Xmarchello: none)
Jazz - Acroni 4-2* tonight: Jazz: Alfredsson, Zetterberg: H. Sedin, Zetterberg)
Hungarianfan - nyi 0-0 -- Final result (hope they have a good excuse for not posting :006: )
Pihinalle - GX 9-2 tonight: pihinalle: none; GX: H. Sedin, Alfredsson, Zetterberg)
Roots - Jokos31 2-5 tonight: roots: H. Sedin, D. Sedin, Alfredsson; jokos: Alfredsson)
Skratch - Nyquil 6-3 tonight: Skratch: Zetterberg, D. Sedin ; Nyquil: Alfredsson, Zetterberg)
Brimsek - da Silva 4-2 tonight: Brimsek: Alfredsson, Zetterberg ; dasilva: D Sedin, Zetterberg)
-----------------
* Olli Jokinen's 1 assist included. Olli Jokinen was still not on the scoresheet when Acroni specified that he had picked Olli + it was more likely that Acroni originally had picked Olli and not Jussi. Besides, both Jazz and Acroni will under all circumstances make it to the qualifying round since hungarianfan and nyi have not posted.
Interim scores before tonights games:
Roots - Jokos31 2-5 tonight: roots: H. Sedin, D. Sedin, Alfredsson; jokos: Alfredsson)
So for the first timers editing your roster post if forgiven?
Hungarianfan is probably either having connection issues, or had a spot open up for him unexpectedly for knee surgery he has been waiting for. Maybe Krisz can get a hold of him...
As far as I can see, NYI has not even returned to the site for about 2 weeks, and his only post was in signing up for the draft. I have not seen in on the IIHF Fancorner recently either... :scratchhe

According to IIHF, the world's smallest hockey-playing country is Portugal with only 43 registered male players of all ages. Andorra has 90 and Liechtenstein has 92. Canada is the world leader with 552,049, followed by USA 485,017.
The last I heard from Portugal was that the players that play hockey there were playing in spain because there was no Arena in Portugal.
Soccer is king there every other sport is minor and ice hockey would be way way down list. :653:
Must say, that I don´t like the style the Finns are playing just now. They look like as a bunch of state officials - doing just what they have to do, but nothing more. They must improve a lot if they are going to win over any big countries.
Erkka Westerlund have hidden the best finnish snipers uptill now. Looking forward to see J. Jokinen and Viuhkola as soon as possible. Westerlund is a very careful coach and is using only allroud-type players, not snipers who are used to look after scoring chances at their own teams and thinking less of e.g. defence matters. :stupid:
Interim scores before tonights games:

Question,
I chose Jagr in my team for the CZE - KAZ.
He was injured in tonight's game against GER
and will be gone for 2 weeks.
Is it allowed to choose a new player in case of
an injury happening after a player has been
already chosen to the draft?

I am glad that I won today, and even we beat the Germans. But I am more dissapointed, rather really pissed off. 1st - Jágr has a broken finger, he is likely miss all. I hope not.
2nd - very poor officiating by our referee Šindler, who didnt allow 2 goals (at least one should´ve been allowed) in the game LAT- USA. Shame on you, a..hole!!!
You can thank me for retrieving Caz. :smart: :003:

Is it allowed to choose a new player in case of

No, if you post early you'll take your chances and you're rewarded with the option to protect one of your players. But you also risk picking players who get injured, even during practise.

14-13 against Swisshockeyacademy :653:
Swiss lead 9-11 when half of games were played
15:30:13 [Sharks] Parrish
15:30:21 [bling] Parrish scores for USA.
15:30:34 [Sharks] weight got assist?
15:31:49 [brims] weight with assist Sharks
after that: [Sharks] 14-13 for me?
That was good game. Thanks Dougie :drink2: :drinker-g
the shame is wearing off..im only mildly emabarrassed to post them for the 4th :087: as a long suffering canucks fan i understand ya can't have one without the other :089:
Yes, I can see the reason for your embarrasment :) ...let's hope they won't make more than 3 points in total...I think Leijonat could survive that and so would you :023:
Tiggru you don't need any help nice Canadian boys you listed will do you proud :002:
Indeed they did, roots! :yelclap: I hope our boys will prove to be equally productive for you :045:
It seems that from groups B and F some guys who didn't post (and apparently will not post) will advance to qualifying round. And in the groups (ours and C,D,G) where everyone participated the last one of the group will not proceed.
Just an idea: when forming groups II and III, instead of allowing players who finished 3rd in groups B and F to proceed, just somehow select two players who finished 4th in the groups where everyone posted. -> no these stupid x-0 victories in the qualifying round.
Hmm.. ok I don't have time to think about this further, busy @work :devileek:
Awwww geez! :seeingsta
"Alexei Yashin and Ilya Kovalchuk missed their attempts at the open net."
Thanks a lot guys! :stupid:
Unlike our playoffs earlier this spring -- which were close with Skratch winning -- Skratch simply is destroying me today. Congrats. Good luck in the next round! :drinker-g
Next up is NyQuil
You better do your home work buddy. Sorry I know getting cocky just that old portugese blood boiling over hehehehehe!!!! :653:
Huzzah! Poetic justice! :claphands See you in the next round.
Seriously though, our group was a CLOSE one.
Props to Brims too, he just ran into bad luck.
BTW I think Eve's suggestion makes sense as well. Perhaps the top two 4th place teams in terms of "points for" can make it in.
Of course, it's DanCan's show and I'm sure he has a plan.
Hrmm, however, the "points for" could be skewed by the particular dates they managed to get.
Props to Brims too, he just ran into bad luck.

Glad you're enjoying yourself. :drinker-g We'll look at Eve's proposal when the preliminary round is over. Hockeynomad has informed me that he doesn't participate after all, and if Sammy doesn't post for his last game, there will be one extra spot available, and I'll suggest that should go to the best #4. The best #4 will fill in for Sammy/Hockeynomad and start with 0 points and GF=GA=0:0 in the Qualifying round. Is this a reasonable suggestion?

Dancan,
Hate pointing this out, since it hurts me... :D
You have me top of our group, I assume because I have a better goal difference than Criz. However, Criz beat me (by one point, damn!) in our game, so I believe he should be above me?
And thanks to Criz, Tigger and Marco for making it such a tight group. Think it's entirely appropriate that Marco gets the spare 4th place slot.

DanCan,
My players did make 1 point tonight (Cipruss had an assist),
but nevertheless I was lucky to have the forfeit.
Then again, I lost to bling with forfeit, so...
Game on:)
ehh, it seems you misunderstood, so:
5 May
Group G
Tigger - Graham
Marco Benedetti - Criz
Criz's roster:
Vaclav Prospal (CZE)
Janis Sprukts (LAT)
Joe Thornton (CAN) 2
Rick Nash (CAN) 6
Petr Sykora (CZE)
Marco's roster:
Jaromir Jagr (CZE) [protected]
Joe Thornton (CAN) 2
Rick Nash (CAN) 6
Tomaz Razingar (SLO)
Leonids Tambijevs (LAT)
It looks like a draw, 8-8. So why did you write I had lost 2-8?
anyway, thanks :seeingsta
You're right Criz. Big mistake. Yours and Krisz's handles are so similar. :shakehead
The score will be corrected to 8-8. However, I can't change the decision to let Marco go through to the Qualifying Round.
OK, I know, I don't want to get rid of Marco. Correcting a mistake was my purpose.
I know this is no injury thread, but because this information may have some effect on our draft, I thought to post it in here. :)
Antti Jussi Niemi, Ville Peltonen and Kimmo Timonen are all suffering from injuries and could't be on the ice in Leijonat practice today. According to Erkka Westerlund it's very uncertain that all (or anyone) of them are able to play tomorrow, he was especially concerned about Ville Peltonen's situation. :087:
I have a question and a declaration.
First - how'z hockey in Portugal?

Don't take this draft thing too close. It's a big luck machine. According to probability theory I will be out in 24 hours or less. It does not affect my concentration on hockey and beer though.
:drinker-g
Just curious as to why I'm listed with 2 points even though my record is 2-0-1.
Don't worry, NQ. That's called "copy/paste developing". Happens to great minds from time to time. To me, too :)
:drinker-g
Well, I have made up my mind to go to Riga next year. I have been interested in Latvia for a long time, but never had a chance to visit her. That´s about the future, tonight we will see a great game between FIN and Latvija. Peltonen and Rintanen are playing again tonight and also those snipers I have been waiting for are at the team also, so Latvija, keep tight on your hats, here we come :yelclap: :yelclap: :yelclap:
Hey NQ wake up already and don't forget to post your roster for today! :devileek:
edit: I believe Jogi means Peltonen and Timonen are back in the action.. not Rintsi ;)

Of course Eve, sorry about the disinformation I was sreading. I was a bit hurry at work.

SWE-CAN 5-4 :claphands Let's go to Riga next year! Skratch invites everyone for a drink!!! Do you take our order for the drink here, or shall we open a new thread for it? I want a beer with a tequila (a bottle of each).
:drink2: :drinker-g
Let's all go to Riga and have a drink.
:drink2: :drink2: :drink2: :seeingsta :015:

:drinker-g :drinker-g :drinker-g
I'll be waiting :)
:drinker-g :drinker-g :drinker-g
While we wait, here's the scores before tonights games:
GROUP I
Pyr - Lukasz 0-2
Lukasz: Kovalev 1, Kovalchuk 1. Tonight: O. Jokinen
NB: Pyr has failed to post. Seems that some of my opponents are getting very easy victories. First, Jogi was offshore, and now pyr.
Dancan-Bodycheck 4-2
Dancan: Ovechkin 4 - tonight: O Jokinen
Bodyczech: Weight 1, Kovalchuk 1 - tonight O. Jokinen
Jogi1937 - Krisz 1-1
Jogi: Kovalchuk 1 - tonight: Peltonen, Timonen, Hagman
Krisz: Kovalchuk 1 - tonight: Koltsov, O Jokinen
The situation: Lukasz wins the group in front of Dancan and Pyr. Krisz needs at least a draw to get the #4 spot.
GROUP II
Jazz - Criz 2-2
Jazz: Kovalchuk 1, Kovalev 1 - tonight: O Jokinen
Criz: Kovalchuk 1, Weight 1 - tonight: Kapanen
Acroni - Tigger 5-1
Acroni: Ovechkin 4, Kovalchuk 1 - tonight: Grabovsky, Pantelejevs
Tigger: Weight 1 - tonight Kapanen, Karalahti, Timonen
Graham - Hungarianfan 2-2
Graham: Weight 1, Markov 1, tonight: Plüss, Kapanen
Hungarianfan: Weight 1, Kovalchuk 1, tonight: Kapanen
The situation: Jazz and Criz still battles to win the group. Acroni has a commanding lead against Tigger, but Tigger still has plenty of Suomi ammo for tonights game. If Tigger wins then Acroni will not make it to the 1/8 finals if graham - Hungarianfan remains tied. If Acroni wins (or get a tie), then Hungarianfan will be eliminated since Graham is sure to get a tie.
GROUP III
Bling - Pihinalle 1-1
Bling: Kovalev 1. Tonight: Kapanen, Streit, Ankipans
Pihinalle: Weight. Tonight: Pärssinen, Hagman
GX - Marco 2-2
GX: Markov 1, Kovalchuk 1. Tonight: None
Marco: Kovalchuk 1, Weight 1. Tonight: Kapanen, O Jokinen, Fischer
Caz - roots 1-0
Caz: Weight 1. Tonight: Pärssinen, Hentunen, Kapanen
roots: Tonight: J & O Jokinen, Niemi, Kapanen, Ruutu
The situation: GX needed to beat Marco today to reach the #4 spot, but that's no longer possible since GX has used all his ammo. Bling, Caz, Marco and Pihinalle will proceed to the 1/8 finals.
GROUP IV
Sharksattack - Skratch 2-5
Shark: Weight 1, Kovalchuk 1. Tonight: Kapanen, Pärssinen
Skratch: Datsyuk 3, Kovalev 1, Weight 1. Tonight: None
Quebecois - da Silva 5-2
Quebec: Ovechkin 4, Weight 1. Tonight: O. Jokinen
da Silva: Kovalchuk 1, Kovalev 1. Tonight: Kapanen
Nyquil - Eve 3-1
Nyquil: Weight 1, Kovalchuk 1, Kovalev 1 - tonight: none
Eve: Kovalchuk 1. Tonight: Kapanen, O. Jokinen
The situation: If Skratch beat sharks, then the two Finns from this group (Sharks and Eve) will be eliminated. Sharks can settle for a draw due to better goal difference. At this point Skratch has taken the lead 5-2, but no players available for tonight. Sharks need Kapanen + Pärssinen to make a combined three points.
1/8 finals at this this point...Participants in bold has already been decided.
Lukasz - Skratch
Quebecois - Pyr
Dancan - da silva
Nyquil - Lukasz
Jazz - Pihinalle
Castorpollux - Acroni
Criz - Marco Benedetti
Bling - Graham
Quarterfinals
Lukasz/Skratch - Quebecois/pyr
Dancan/da silva - Nyquil/Lukasz
Jazz/Pihinalle - Castorpolluz/Acroni
Criz/Marco - Bling/Graham
so much for my entirely Finnish roster :stupid: man that was one dull game :015: good luck inthe next round guys :drink2:

Good for you Lukasz, having double chance in the quarterfinals! :claphands If Dancan wouldn't mind, I would play against NyQuil, since I got #4 spot in Group I. :023:

I Was hoping to Avoid Duncan until the finals or semi's but I had to draw in the quaters so here we go. Well good luck let the best man win and lets hope there is some goals. :653:
I assume I'm playing Krisz?
Good luck to everyone whos still in the draft! :drinker-g
Maybe it's because I lost against you all, but have to say I prefered the "old system" - just add up points from every day for everyone and see after the WC final whos winning. It's not as much depending on luck as this man (or woman) against man (or woman), imo. :devileek:

Less luck, but less fun, too. You have to know how to use all the opponent´s weaknesses. :devileek: Btw. Quebecois, do you still want the photo of Mucha? Well, I guess you know what´s expected from you in the 1/8 finals then.... :kidding:
My take on this:
• First, it should be borne in mind that our IHWC draft has a much bigger element of luck than our annual draft. There are several reasons for this. The most important IMO is that the teams play so few games that it becomes more difficult to grasp who's hot and who's not. And in the few cases where this is possible there is a tendency that all participants pick the players who are hot, e.g. Rick Nash. Another important reason is there are fewer games to choose from on each game day. In our annual draft, I noticed that most participants mainly focused on the league's scoring leader list and paid less attention to who was hot at the moment, especially those players who had only recently started to rack up points and not yet made it to the top 20 on the scoring leader list. This became particularly important in our play offs where I managed to eliminate my opponents by exclusively paying attention to the hot players (e.g. Jan Caloun) and not to the scoring leader list. This strategy is simply not feasible in the IHWC draft and for this reason the draft has a much higher element of luck and chance.
• This is not to say that our the IHWC draft is purely a question of luck and chance. If this was the case, then the standings would have been much more even - regardless of what model we would have used. But still the element of chance is big.
So far 16 participants have been eliminated. These 16 participants can be divided into three categories:
1) DID NOT POST (6): Fez, hockeynomad, Nyi, Sammy, Xmarchello and to some extent Hungarianfan
2) NATIONAL FAVOURITES FAILED TO DELIVER (7): Eve, Jogi1937, roots, Sharksattack, Tigger - all Finns or fans of Finland + GX who often picked players from Latvia and Belarus.
(3) JUST UNLUCKY (3): Brimsek, Bodyczech, Swisshockey.
• So IMO only very few (3) of the sixteen that have been eliminated have been purely unlucky. The rest have mainly themselves to blaim for either not posting or having a preference for their own national favourites.
Now we are down to 16, there'll be much more homogeneity among the players picked (just look at the rosters picked for today), and this means that the luck factor will start to weigh in. Most of the games will be decided by one player and usually by the player who's been protected.
While the night is still young...
How about tie breakers now - in playoffs? Could not find it in the rules...
As I see from lineups posted (and from probability theory, of course :003: )we might get at least one tonight.
Decided by group results? Goals? GWGs?
Master?
:drinker-g
Oh, boy...yesterday it was the first time I picked any of the Leijonat and look what happened...the whole team failed to score :blah: . It seems I ripped the 'kiss of death' title from roots :003: ...if she ever had it in the first place :devileek:
Congratulations to Acroni :023: and everyone else who beat me...which means every single player in our group :p :drinker-g

Haha so you beat the married ones? :crazylaug :devileek:
:crazylaug No Eve, I'm not biased that way :083: ...I let everyone beat me regardless of their marital status :o

Skratch, late last night I noticed that I forgot to add the OT rules (same rules we applied in our annual draft). And it's too late to do anything about it for the 1/8 finals now.
So this is what we'll do:
Tied games today: Both teams (participants) will post their roster on Friday (rematch) and at the same time play their 1/4 final against the third opponent.
Example:
Today: Lukasz - Skratch 5-5
Quebecois - pyr 5-4
1/4 finals:
Lukasz/skratch - Quebecois
Example: Lukasz 5, Skratch 6, Quebecois 5
Then: rematch 1/8 final: Lukasz-Skratch 6-5
1/4 final: Skratch-Quebecois 6-5
In addition we'll introduce the OT format on Thursday.
Makes sense?
...
Makes sense?
Makes perfect sense.

I have received most, if not all, of your rosters now, so here's the deal -- at least for today:
I am not going to reveal the rosters, but as usual I will post the interim scores after the afternoon games. You will then not know what players your opponent has chosen for tonights games - and the excitement will be preserved. :036:

It seems I have to congratulate Graham on gaining a win. Let's hope you can go on winning and good luck in the final. :002:
I'd like to thank Dancan for the great job he does.
Thanks, Criz. I'll give it my best shot!

Nyquil - Krisz 6-7

da Silva - Krisz 7-8 OT
da silva: Nash 3, Thornton 3, Hossa 1
Krisz: Nash 3, D Sedin 3, Palffy 1
OT points: 0-7
Thornton scored the GWG, and had an assist as well, so he had 4 points. That means NyQuil-Krisz game was 7-7 tie, tie-breaker needed, but that's not necessary, because da Silva chose Thornton as well, which means he finished with 8 points, so he won the semi-final anyway. So congratz to You da Silva, the rookie won!!! :045: :drink2:
I hope You will read all these before 4PM CET, and You can PM Your roster to DanCan. I'm near my computer until 7AM CET, during the day I don't have computer access, if I don't get an answer from You or DanCan until 7 AM, I post my roster for the semis, post Yours please to DanCan before 4 PM, who will reconsider, if You or me play in semi-finals.
I post my roster, just because I don't want pyr to win the semis, if You fail to post. :003:
I think this minor mistake did not affect any other results in the 1/8 finals, or in the quarter-finals, but check it please.
Congratz, and good luck to You all, who making the semi-finals!!!
I did not win, but at least I deserve the fair-play award!!! :claphands

Hmmm let me see:
1/8 finals
Pyr - Quebcois 10-7
Nyquil - Krisz 8-7 OT (ot points 10-8)
Acroni - Caz 10-8
Bling - Graham 4-7
1/4 finals
Skratch - Pyr 10-11 OT (ot points: skratch 7, pyr 8)
