NHL Arbritation Tracker

By Tom Wheatley

Arbitration in the NHL isn't pretty. Unlike baseball, where the arbiter chooses either the team's or player's bid, an NHL salary arbiter listens to each side's argument and awards any amount he or she deems fit.

Instead of letting a neutral party decide their fate, the sides often come to an agreement before the hearing date. Even after a decision is made, teams have the option of walking away while retaining the right to match an offer from another team that is less than 80 percent of the decision.

Here (from espn.com/nhl) (http://proxy.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?page=04arbitration) is the complete list of eligible players who filed for arbitration by the July 15 deadline, with their position, age and 2003-04 statistics (games played, goals, assists, points, plus-minus rating and penalties in minutes). Players who have signed with their team before their hearing date are listed with "settled" and the terms of their new contract.

We also contacted four NHL pro scouts to get their takes on the players who filed.

Nashville Predators agree to terms with goaltender Tomas Vokoun

Czech goaltender Tomas Vokoun has agreed to a long-term contract that will boost his pay to $3 million US next season from the $1.2 million US he earned in helping the Predators to their first NHL playoff berth last season.

"Tomas was a major part of this team's success last season and we are very pleased to sign him to a long-term deal," GM David Poile said Wednesday. "Since taking over as our No. 1 goaltender, Tomas has become one of the best young goaltenders in the NHL and he continues to improve each season."

The Ottawa Senators re-signed Zdeno Chara to a two-year, $9.5-million US contract Tuesday, avoiding salary arbitration.

"He's a premier defenceman," GM John Muckler said in announcing the deal. Chara, who was paid $2.4 million last season, will make $4.6 million in 2004-05 and $4.9 million in 2005-06.

Damphousse scored 12 goals and assisted on 29 with San Jose last season, when he was paid $4 million US. He led the Sharks in playoff scoring with seven goals and seven assists in 17 games, leading the club he captained all the way to the Western Conference final.

"I'm excited and extremely enthusiastic about joining the Avalanche, a club that has already established a winning tradition in Denver," the 18-year NHL centre said Wednesday. "I'm looking forward to playing in such a great hockey environment."

Just looking at the today's dealings by Phoenix GM Mike Barnett....

He signs Petr Nedved as a free agent today and then goes ahead and trades Daymond Langkow to the Calgary Flames for defenceman Denis Gauthier and left-winger Oleg Saprykin.

Interesting that Saprykin was available after the good job that he did for the Flames in their recent playoff run...

Anyways, looking at the Coyotes now, can you image a first line (or even a power-play unit) with Hull, Nedved, and Doan up front, and Morris on the point....This will be an improved team whenever the season gets underway..

I guess this also works for Nedved in that Verekova will be only a 1 hour flight away working on LA....can't see much for her to do in Phoenix..

Here is the link, from canoe.ca (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Phoenix/2004/08/26/603762.html) :p
