View Full Version : Will the juniors SEL success hurt Sweden's WJC team?

Many juniors do very well in their SEL teams. Krüger and Joesfson in DIF, Markström in Brynäs, Adam Larsson, Tim Erixon and David Rundblad in SAIK ect. Can this hurt the swedish WJC 2009 team? What I know SEL hasn't any break during the weeks of WJC. Krüger and Josefson play in DIF first line and Markström is Brynäs first goalie. Can the SEL teams stop their players from play in WJC?

What do you think?

Elitserien teams have to let these players to play in the WJC if they are selected. This is true for every league that's under IIHF jurisdiction (i.e. doesn't include NHL and other NA leagues).

Actually I believe CHL teams also have to release players for IIHF games.

I am not sure about this but at least for the U18 worlds Canada often misses their top players due to CHL playoffs.

No, the CHL is not controlled by the Canadian Hockey Association. The major junior leagues that became the CHL opted for self-control around 1980, I believe. So the Canadian Hockey Association doesn't control the leagues that send players to the Canadian national men's teams (senior and junior).

This also, at least partly, explains, why the Canadian hockey association keeps a very low profile in the IIHF. Obviously, it cannot speak on behalf of the NHL and CHL.

If the NHL and CHL were under the umbrella of IIHF, Canada would be far more active and have far more influence in the IIHF.

It's my belief that very few Canadian hockey fans fail to understand this. They blame the IIHF for being run by Europeans. In fact, they should only blame themselves.

Denmark has just never, if I remember correctly, had trouble getting CHL players for the U20 Worlds - even when we are not playing in the Elite division.

I guess we have just been lucky then.

The Wikipedia article on "Hockey Canada" says that they sanction the CHL - but perhaps this is not the same as having control over them. I am confused :-)

So it wouldn't be a problem for us to get players from CHL? What about OHL then? What's the difference between CHL and OHL? We have 2011 egiable top prospect Gabriel Landeskog(a former player of Djurgården's IF) in Kitchener Rangers. If Team Sweden wants him, is it possible?

The elite U20 is played during the Christmas break so that is not such a big problem for the CHL teams. Maybe Denmark has been lucky in the lower divisions or perhaps the Danish players haven't been that crucial to the CHL team and thus expendable. This could become a problem with some very high end talent from Div I countries (like Mikkel Bödker).

CHL (Canadian Hockey League) is comprised of three separate leagues OHL (Ontario Hockey League), WHL (Western Hockey League) and QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League). These leagues have their own champions which face each other at the end of each season for the Memorial Cup.

Can we say that the winner of the memorial cup also is the champions of the whole CHL?

Thank you for the answers. I'm not too good on junior hockey at all.

I have a another question: is it a difference between the IIHF rules for the junior level and the senior level? Last year HV71 and Linköping threat the Swedish national team with to not let their players play Euro Hockey Tour. How can they do that if the rules says they must release their players to International play? Or isn't Euro Hockey Tour under IIHF?

Yes, the winner of the Memorial Cup is the champion of the whole CHL.

3 out of 4 clubs are the winners of their own leagues (1 winner from QMJHL, 1 winner from OHL and 1 winner from WHL) so you must be champion of your league to get to the Memorial Cup. The other club is just the host and it dosnt matter what they finish during the season, they get a free pass because they are hosts.
