I think Kazakhstan deserves its own hockey thread. IHG actually has two members from Kazakhstan but they haven't moved from the old board yet. Hope to see them here during the World Championship in Austria. I am sure they will expand on this thread as well as correct any misunderstandings I make.

KAZAKHSTAN

IIHF Stats (2004):
Indoor rinks: 8
Outdoor rinks: 12
Players: 2,200 (males: 700, juniors 1,300, females 200)
Refs: 74 (males 66, females 8)

The first Kazakh hockey teams were established in the 1950's, and Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk quickly emerged as the best team. In the late 80's Torpedo played in the top Soviet league. After the dissolution of Soviet Union, Kazakhstan founded its own hockey federation in 1991 (initially as a part of the Soviet Ice Hockey Fedration). The federation joined IIHF in 1992 after gaining independence.

League
The Kazakh league (2004-5) consists of the following 7 teams:

• Kazzinc Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk Homepage with team logo (http://www.kazzinc-torpedo.kz/). This homepage also include an interesting page on the history of the club with old photos.

• Enbek Alma Ata Homepage with team logo (http://enbek.cominter.kz/ind.htm)

• Kazakhmis Karaganda Homepage (http://www.hc-kazakhmys.kz/index.html)

• Rudny Gornyak
• Barys Astana - ok
• Irtysh Pavlodar -ok
• Kazakhmis 2, Karaganda

Another thing about hockey in Kazakhstan is that the best teams play in the Russian league system.

Kazzinc-Torpedo and Kazakhmys play in Vysshaya and Barys, Irtysh, Gornyak, Kazakhmys-2 and Kazzinc-Torpedo-2 all play in Division 1.

Something like 90% of all hockey players from Kazakhstan come from Ust-Kamenogorsk which is the major hotbed of hockey there.

The best player all-time was Boris Alexandrov. His son is Viktor Alexandrov of Metallurg Novokuznetsk in the Russian Super League.

That is why the Kazakh season ends very late. At this point, Torpedo (and Kazakhmys) have played rather few games in the Kazakh league due to their heavy schedule in the Vysshaya leagu (regular season = 52 games).

Sorry for mistakes, I dont have time to correct them, but:

Date: 04-28-05 10:32

Well, the strongest team in Kazakhstan, Kazzinc-Torpedo (Ust-Kamenogorsk city) used to play in the Soviet Premier League, and back then I can recall overcrowded matches against CSKA, Dynamo, and other top Soviet clubs - with the official capacity of around 6000, you could easily get 7000+ people attanding such a game (by the way, back then Torpedo was one of the most scoring team, for instance, they have beaten Dynamo Moscow by the score of 10:2).

In 1990s, as a result of the former Soviet Union collapse the team suddenly became a foreign club, which, starting from 1995 was denied the right to play in the same championship with the Russian teams. Having no equal competitors in Kazakhstan that meant that the players had to seek new ways to continue their careers. And they did - the group of 9 (as far as I remember) top 'Ustinka' (a nick-name by which this team was known throughout the Soviet Union) players left the club and joined the Metallurg-Magnitogorsk, thus making their new club a super-power in the Russian Super-League. Among those players there were several people who still play for the Kazakhstan national team: the well-known Koreshkov brothers (they still hold all-time record for most goals scored in Russia's top league), K.Shafranov (the only player in our squad this year to have NHL experience under his belt), A.Sokolov (don't confuse him with the goalkeeper of team Russia), and many others. To add some more, there were some other big names who left the team to join the top clubs:
A.Troshinsky (now captain of Russian League champions, Dynamo Moscow), E.Nabokov (Dynamo, San Jose Sharks, Metallurg - a famous goale that Russia is dreaming of having in their squad)
V.Eremeev (star goalkeeper of Russian League champions, Dynamo Moscow)
N.Antropov (T Maple Leafs and Lokomotiv Yaroslavl forward)

Unfortunatelly, the latter 4 could not play for Kazakhstan this year (although the reasons for that differ). The problem is that when a Canadian or Russian player can not play or does not feel like going to WC, it is relatevely easy to find a replacement - a player that is at least comparable, if not equal. And it becomes a huge problem in the Kazakhstan case - the national team is basically consists of the natives of just one town with the population of 300 000 - by far the smallest pool of players to choose from compared to any other nation in the elite group of world hockey. Back to the attendance figures - imagine that the same percentage of the Moscow population will go to a hockey game as it is (percentage-wise) seen in Ust-Kamenogorsk (7000max out of 300000 people) - then you had to have a hockey stadium with capacity of almost 300,000 people attending a game in Moscow!

So, the team faced heavy losses in terms of the number of top players who left the team because of the political and economic disaster - along with them there was seen a huge outflow of best trainers, who simply took their entire youth squads and fled to the more prospering cities in Russia (there there several Ust-Kamenogorsk hockey school alumni who have won the U18 and U20 WC with team Russia - they simply took the new passport). That, together with absence of real local competition almost killed the team in the second half of the 1990. At that time one could evidence maybe around several hundreds of people attending a game.

But then a miracle came in. In 1998, the Kazakhstan national team, lead by the Olympic Champion and an author of the goal in the famous 1975 CSKA-Montreal New Years Eve game, Boris Alexandrov, won the preliminary round and was promoted to TOP-8 in Olympic tournament in Nagano. To achieve this, Kazakhstan team had to deafeat a strong SLOVAKIA team with some top NHL stars on board (remember, it was the first Olympic hockey tournament with NHL participants).

Some time after it (actually, several years), Torpedo club was allowed to play in the Russian premier-league (second leagues after the Superleague), and, once again, a sell-out game is not a rare event in its re-built stadium (although now it has a reduced capacity of around 5000). Again, if you take a look at the official attendance figures during the away games of Torpedo, you can easily see that it is one of the most popular clubs in its league. In fact, during the late 1980s and early 1990s TORPEDO once was among the top 5 stadiums for highest home attendance (please check the Soviet Sport newspaper in case this sounds too fantastic to you) in the entire Soviet Union (and it could be even higher, but the Moscow clubs, of course, had much bigger stadiums).

OK, that's enough for a post. In case you would like to know more - visit www.ustinka.com (an unnoficial, yet the most infoormative web-site about ice hockey in Kazakhstan) - unfortunately, it has only Russian version, but you one can always write directly to me (hranilka@mail.ru, in English) or to other people on that web-site (a guy under 'torpedo' nick-name there also speaks German).

Very very interesting article! thanks a lot!

Can you explain us how is Kaz national league(it means, technical level, popularity there are foreign players in rosters and so on)? I know many KAZ teams compete both in Russian and Kaz domestic league....but with the same roster? Or KAZ domestic league is scheduled in different period?
Oh...and Welcome to IHG!!

OK, those teams that play both in RUS and KAZ leagues do it with the same squad. Combined with the nationals (TOrpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk leading players played in Olympic pre-qualification) and Continental Cup (Torpedo was in the final round) makes a very long season.

The KAZ national championship is a very small competition, with a well-known champion (TOrpedo), with only 4 to 6 teams in the competition (#7 club is actualy a farm-club to Kazakhstan's second-best team, Kazakhmys). Over time, things are changing, and in 2004/05 season Torpedo lost several games to #2 team (Kazakhmys), but it the leading positions in all Kazakhstan teams are taken by the Ust-Kamenogorsk hockey school alumni (both players and trainers). Kazakhmys has quite few Russian players on board (they are considered a rich club by the local standards), and sometimes other teams attract cheap players who could not find a job in top Russian clubs.

Overall, ice-hockey in Kazakhstan much less popular than soccer (Ust-Kamenogorsk is the only exception). In Kazakhstan, this sport lacks any support on the national level (like in Belarus and Latvia).

....strong SLOVAKIA team with some top NHL stars on board (remember, it was the first Olympic hockey tournament with NHL participants).

I guess you meant some top NHL stars on the tribune... We all know how the NHLers were allowed to participate. But that´s not the point. As nautilus said, hockey in Kazachstan lacks support on the national level. According to the Czech-TV commentators the fans haven´t seen their own national team for 5 years! No home played game, no TV coverage of away ones. :shakehead And the way the national team buys the equipment for the players....find a store on the way to the game (tournament) and buy the things they have there. If this is true...

Nautilus Kazakhstan showed reasonably at this Olympics nearly tying Russia beating Lativa with a couple of super goals played well v Slovakia & just caught on the hop v Sweden

The Koreshki were prominent but they are ageing.Who amongst the next crop of youngsters has it in themselves to step to the national team ?

Konstantin Pushkarev is one for example. And have any more funds been found for developing junior hockey there & outside of Ust-Kamenogorsk ? :)

If you're referring to the Toronto Maple Leaf player, that's Nikolai. The only other Kazakhstan Antropov is the 18 year old Alexandr Antropov, a defenseman in the Kazzinc-Torpedo system. There is Dimitri Antropov, but he's with EV Wiesbaden and under German citizenship.

As a small side note, Yuri Andropov was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union for 16 months.

Ivan Efremov (http://www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=44026), 24, Rudny Gornyak defender, was found dead last week in his house, apparently for suicide.

The defenseman for the hockey team Gornyak Rudnyi Ivan Efremov is found dead. The conclusion of forensic scientists is suicide.

24-years old Efremov was considered as one of the most prospective players of Gornyak. The inhabitant of Ust-Kamenogorsk was in Rudnyi as a legionary. Friends till now cannot believe in his suicide neither natives nor colleagues.

"Always cheerful, self-assured, open," the defenseman of Gornyak, Vitaly Litvinov said about him. "His parents were in Ust Kamenogorsk, the girl is from there too, very good, came with him constantly on games in Ore. Simply one cannot think that he could impose this on his own hands."

In Ust-Kamenogorsk this all happens. The tragedy has happened on September, 4th. On this day Gornyak spent a penultimate match of the Cup tournament. Еfremov in the list of players which did not appear. As Litvinov recollects, "that day Vanya was late for the gathering of the team, that for him was a big rarity. Upon the end of the match guys have decided to meet on quay of Red Eagles. Ivan's girlfriend Katya has informed NG, that he has phoned to the guys and has told he that already waits for them on quay."

"On this bridge by the car, his best friend Vani, a hockey player, died one year ago," Katya has told. "And in memory of him the stone plate there has been established. Vanya went there often for the memory of the friend, and that day waited there for guys. The boys have come after the appointed term of twenty minutes. Vanya was not anywhere, and then they have seen him on a tree, meters in twenty from the stone plate."

According to Ekaterina, examination has shown, that attributes of a violent death was not revealed. There was not a farewell note at Efremov.

"He always was kind, open," Katya has told. "in a life all arranged by him."

Efremov's car, a Nissan Primera, even now stands in Ore. For it, he has not returned.

My condolances to everybody that knew Ivan, sadly it seems we lose quite a few young players each year. Just a few weeks ago, Stefan Blaho passed on and now Efremov.

Kazakhmys Satpaev decides to retire its team (called Kazakhmys-2 or wolves) from Kazakhstan championship for economic reasons and a war vs federation, as reported on officialsite (automatic translaton):

Squabbles and underground war, probably, for the control over the budget of one of leading teams in Kazakhstan and to Russia have led to disbandment of farm-club « Satpaev wolves ».
Kazakhmys-2 was officially took off from the championship of Kazakhstan. The formulation of so strange decision sounds even more strange. The pier, a present management unlike predecessors considers unpromising to train, train and pay money to legionaries. The last in a double Kazakhmys it was collected already 17 person. Therefore makes decision to remove(take off) a team from draw of national championship, and money to direct on development of children's hockey in apaev. It is surprising! While other Kazakhstan clubs before to sound problems( for a season, look aside the Russian hockey market, one of the richest clubs of republic disperses funds on houses. Though that here surprising? Unless there can be a future at sports which exists exclusively owing to legionaries. If our Kazakhstan clubs will take for a rule truths to be completed only варягами hockey in our country long will not stretch. It is necessary sometime to start to take in a turn and local, homebrew players. And can, has put at all in noble impulses?
On official site Kazakhmys article in which the former main trainer and vice-president Satpaev's club Anatoly Kartaev opens a veil of intrigues and secret games is placed. With which there lived a team last months. On Anatoly Zinovevicha's firm belief, with him have acted unfairly, actually having accused in plunder of financial assets of club. We shall not count money in another's pockets. Guards another. Whether room war will affect the further development Satpaev's hockey as a whole?
Anatoly Kartaev these days is in holiday, officially club has not left yet. On a question of the correspondent "Prosport", whether he plans and in the further to work in Satpaev. Has answered, that the expert depends on a management of club. « Now I in team do not occupy any post. If the management trusts me and wants, that I have remained, I shall remain. Suggested to head farm-club, but I have refused. It is I level. Kazakhmys-2 have actually disbanded, have left only half of structure for the first team. Whether there will be it in a following season is declared? It is a question not to me, ask a management of club », - the disgraced trainer has shortly characterized the developed situation.
And in fact all so well began. Thought, Kazakhmys - a first signs and in a new coil of development of domestic hockey, and in new sights of patrons of art at this kind of sports. And confidence of their long-term intentions added as time presence of farm-clubs. Certainly, first Satrpaev's team still puts high tasks before itself, but in the Russian tournament. The championship of Kazakhstan as was in a role of the stepson for many so and has remained.
By the way, literally one of these days it became known, that it was removedfrom the championship of Kazakhstan among teams of a superleague and football club Kazakhmys. The natural question arises: perhaps, the sports policy of corporation " Kazakhmys" has simply changed?
- The management of hockey club " Kazakhmys" has sent in Federation of KAZ hockey the letter with the notice that removes farm-club " Kazakhmys "-2 from the championship of Kazakhstan, - vice-president of republican federation of hockey Sergey Drozdov makes comments, - they explain the decision to that the former management of club has declared in a team of 17 Russian players which as present heads of a team count, is inexpedient to train, train and pay money. Only three have expressed desire to receive our citizenship. And they are going to direct means on development of children's hockey.
- The federation agrees with such formulation of the reasons of removal of a team from the championship which and without that is near death?
- Yes, in fact prospects are not present. Legionaries will play and will leave.

- How to be with players who during the high season have remained without work?
- To them, probably, will pay certain indemnifications.

- Did not suggest to club to keep a team, having collected in it homebrew players?
- We offered this variant, but the management of club too can be understood, good players at business and them will not declare, and simply to leave number or to participate for a tick, the sense is not present.

- Then why the club has thought suddenly during the high season? And whether there is a limit on legionaries in the Kazakhstan hockey?
- By position in national championship the team can declare seven legionaries, including the goalkeeper.

- How it has turned out, what in Kazakhmys-2 played at once 17 legionaries?!
- They have undressed quantity of the Russian players into two clubs - фарм and the basic team. It is supposed. Under the rules five players from the basic team can be supposed to player-for a double. On the claim of federation the club has sent us the letter in which asked of the sanction to play to these hockey players in our championship, with assurances, that documents of these players are submitted on reception of citizenship. As it has appeared actually, the majority of them such desire did not burn. It agree, our rules is not ideal, but we shall consider all its defects in a following season. As you know, now three clubs acting in the supreme league of the championship of Russia in a group "East", Kazakhmys, Barys and Kazzinc-Torpedo will play in the championship of Kazakhstan only in a final part. Till this moment they to internal tournament of the attitude have no, therefore we cannot show anything to first team. In following year we shall bring item in which we shall oblige to finish the championship to all teams and the farm-club, otherwise the basic team will not be supposed to games of national championship. Then all of us we shall press.

Probably, from next year in the Karaganda area there will be one hockey team.
The management of corporation Kazakhmys has suggested to unite Sary Arka Karaganda and Kazakhmys Satpaev. Now the corporation finances both teams. The probability of that merge will occur is great.
It is supposed that the new, incorporated command will named Sary Arka, the strongest hockey players will enter into it, and games will pass in Karaganda.

An article from portal Pozit.kz reports today an interview with Kazakhmys director Talgat Berdinov saying that at 70-80% club will continue activities also next season, conversely to previous informations and official statement about a closure of Satpaev club.

After winning bronze medal in russian Vysshaya league, fans wrote an appeal to keep Kazakhmys alive.

here Berdinov's declaration:

I can tell the following, if Kazakhmys closed, to me at a today's meeting at once about it would tell. Now it is possible to tell that for 70-80 percent the club remains. As to our reserve to it it was always given, and the big attention will be paid.
Satpaev's guys, as well as their senior clubmates during a season achieved success on the Russian arena, and they just as Kazakhmys was not always represented possible to be proved the adult to the full. In Russia to us repeatedly let know, that we act in the another's country. And if not the similar attitudethe main team quite could become the leader of the maximum league. But it"have strangled".
