Hopefully Turkey:) wil be promoted.. but then we are missing our ace player Mr Cengiz Ciplak:c186: .. not to sure about my second choice.
The team to be relegated will be Mongolia due to their inexperience..I cannot comment on Greece, will have a clearer picture when I see them play in Lux. Greece may also be relegated but this is purely because it is a new team, and I am not sure how they will fare against the "older" teams that have been around more... Anyways heres to a good tourmanent:)
DPR Korea and Turkey are my picks to be promoted.
Remember N. Korea is here just because was disqualified last year, not due to relegation from Div.II.
Mongolia is my candidate to go at next year Qualifications.
Edit first post and pool added
I'll be in Luxembourg for final weekend, I'll post some pictures and reports

Davide I will be there from 2nd April and will definately be there on the 5th April and try to see all the matches.. It will be good to meet you Graham will also be there, we can have a IHF gettogether:c032:
Why isn't Ciplak playing?
After North Korea for promotion, it is really hard to say who else will go up. Turkey just came back down, South Africa was relegated just in 2006, Greece I think is strong, but good enough for promotion?...not sure. Luxembourg seems to be hot and cold as well. But Mongolia I'm sure will go to Qualification.
Why isn't Ciplak playing?
Pure and simple he is not on the roster

:c165: don't know why such a shame:c165:

Don't you mean Mongolia for Relagation?? Turkey seems to do better in Div 3, so I am hoping that theu will be promoted...

Is there any TV Links?
I hope for Greece. But I think Turkey Korea and South Africa are the favourites.
North Korea clearly first, last game Luxembourg - Greece will decide about second promoted team. Turkey without Ciplak fourth. South Africa with very young team fifth, Mongolia without chances.
South Africa had a supposedly weak roster last year, but the top players seemed to be the same from previous years, I think they just had a bad year, got shut down by Luxembourg goaltending, and played Ireland quite well.
RSA will have a very good chance at that second promotion position.
Greece.. we'll have to see how they do. Looks like they have good offensive power but their defensive side is weak, and that will probably give advantage Luxembourg in that game.
Mongolia played hard last year, but wasn't quite up to par. That being said, we've seen some pretty impressive first-to-second-year improvements in the past so I wouldn't cound them all the way out. Most likely they'll relegate, but there's still that 1%
I'll go with DPR Korea and Luxembourg. Mostly hoping for Luxembourg, but I think Turkey will beat them anyway.
Mongolia has pretty many new names on this year's roster, so it will be interesting to see how they go. Depending on Armenia, they might not even need a qualification next year.
Okay.. let's expand on my last post after looking at the prelim. rosters...
GRE: nothing to say, we've seen what they can do.
PRK: I know nothing of them... we'll see.
TUR: I see a number of familiar names from the past couple years, but no Ciplak. Indeed we shall see how the team can pull together without their star player.
LUX: This is basically a repeat of past years. The LUX hockey community is just that small, there aren't many new names here. I expect to see at least a couple youngsters on the roster, Breuskin last year showed pretty well as a third-liner, Back played well enough too. I wonder if Dessouroux is back in Luxembourg, or still studying in Canada (he played intramurals at McGill last year). The top three look to be back (Welter-Beran-Houdremont), which should be good news for LUX.
RSA: Some names are back from past, stronger years, however many of last year's top players are missing from this list. Back with the team are Esterhuisen, Fraquet, Giot, Joyce, van Eeckhoven and Woolf from past years. Notable missing names: the Reinecke brothers, power forward Mike Edwards, Errol Saffy, defenseman Joe Olivier and veteran blueline anchor Alan Verwey (has he retired, maybe?). This team will be VERY different and rather younger from last year, hard to tell which direction they'll take.
MGL: Top names are back. Tamir and Boldbayar on defense. Bayarsaihkan, Altangerel, Mishigsuren and Aldarbayar on forward, as well as Munkhbold in goal. Missing from the list altogether is last year's team captain Purevdavaa, who was arguably the team's most valuable player. I'm surprised not to see him even in teh team staff... Otgonbayar has taken the jump into team management however. This is a team, that looks a little older, with a little more veteran experience, i'm hoping they'll be able to make use of last year's experience and at least show some improvement.

turkey doesnt have any chance to promote i think - realize their superstar ciplak scored 10+2 from 14 (or smth like that) goals from last tournament - no such player there
Without the Reinecke's and Edwards SA has no chance at promotion.
My votes are Korea, with Lux and Greece fighting for second.

From what I remember from watching match in Ankara with the continental cup, Onur Eroglu played very well, I would say watch out for that name.. though I do admit I am annoyed that Ciplak is not there:(.. , so I am worried about whether Turkey can generate goals.. Of course I have coinfidence in them and also the new coach...

I am really surprised that Cengiz Ciplak is not in the team. North Korea and Greece has a bigger chance. Greek team will make this years surprise.

I have learned never to underestimate a team, but then I will still keep my hopes up for Turkey.

I'm putting my bets on Luxembourg as the dark horse to take the second promotion position.
While their offensive punch isn't as strong as some teams, their goaltending is top-notch (or has the potential to be at any rate), and this should make the difference between them and Greece (which didn't look to be as strong on the defensive), an offensively weaker Turkish side, or a potentially depleted South African squad.
Anybody knows a bookie where you can bet on this event?

Maybe Bwin, check it this evening sometimes. Another possible bookies are Pinnacle or 10bet, but only in case, when Bwin will have lines.

Thanks.. I'll wait for Bwin lines..
Could somebody give me an itinerary to the ice rink? I will be in Amsterdam from 2 april to 6 april and on the 5th I have a free day, I had the idea to have a look at the guys competing in Luxembourg if I can find some kind of transport there and then back to Amsterdam still in the evening.

Hey Steigs...
Alan Verwey didnt retire he is still up and going...
I wish I could have told you why all this players are not playing but at the moment nobody really knows...
Some players who did not go I know would be yet again because they dont have the money to go!
Well this all i know!
Looks like SA is doing well... last time I checked...
I think they might have a change of getting a medal!

The National Team lost its first game 5 -1 at the World Championship. The biggest upset though was Igor Apostolidis' injury at the 2 minute mark of the opening period. He was hit with a puck in the face causing a double fracture above and below his eye. Unfortunately the National Team has lost Igor for the rest of the tournament. Despite the setback, the Greek team kept on fighting and was in the game until the middle of the third period when the score was 2-1 in favor of the South Africans. A tragic mistake on the Greek power-play gave the South Africans a short handed goal taking the hopes of a Greek comeback. The game finally ended 5-1.
The National Teams' goal was scored by Dimitris Kalyvas who was also chosen as the MVP of the Greek Team.

2-1 Luxembourg winning against Turkey end of second period:(.. Come on Turkiyeee
Wow 3-2 Turkey:)))) two goals scored, sorry match is still in second period
Looks like the match ended 4-4 not bad, sounds like a good match.. Will it go to OT?
My pick are N.Korea (of course) and Luzembourg -they have a amall advanatge over Turkey due to home ice, imo.
Mongolia is out.

To furher the above, I understand the Greek team members are absolutely livid over how the injury occured as the result of the play of the South African defencemen.
The Souh African defencemen (# to be inseted when identified) was on his blue line by himself with Apostolidis on a one man forecheck. Instead of using the other 29 meters of the 30 meters width of the ice to "dump" or "clear" the puck, the defencemen decided that from a distance of 2 meters away from Apotolidis the best play was to hit the puck at Apostolidis head; straight away WITHOUT deflection.
The Greeks obviously know it was definately NOT on purpose but it was certainly NOT an accident; Their feelings are it was just a stupid play by a defenceman who has obviously is not schooled in proper hockey.
And yes, Apostolidis was not wearing a visor. It certainly would have assisted in preventing the seriousness of the injury.
A shame...just a shame,,,,

Well not bad for a match without Ciplak,, I agree with Uyar, as I said before Erouglu is a good player and one to watch out for.. It is also a shame not to have you Uyar there, but I am happy that goals can be generated without Ciplak as well.. Hope it gets sorted out for the future tournaments..

funny, all the RSA names I mentioned figured on teh scoresheet. This could well balance out at least from last year, maybe even improve! The Reinecke bros I can understand not playing this year, Riaan..... Edwards is one I'm surprised about: he's been a mainstay for a few years now.
Anyway, good to see RSA starting off strong. And yes, a medal is a definite possibility. I might even go so far as to say probability.
I'm surprised that nobody noticed on the game summaries...
The Mongolian equipment manager played against PRK !!??!!??!?!?!
He's not on the Entry list, but he did play in game 1...
Wonder if Pujee will make a guest appearance? ;)

Could someone try to find a Luxembourg roster, on the IIHF Website their's an article on a player named Rafael Springer, who is the oldest player ever to play in an IIHF Tournament at the age of 49. It also says, He was also the oldest player to score a point at the age of 46 when he assisted on a goal agaisnt Ireland in Mexico City.

Wow, did Kalyvas ever have Mongolia's number, does he carry the Greek team singlehandedly?
Mongolias shot totals were not terrible, and they scored more goals in one game then every other game they've ever played combined (although Greece is arguably the weakest team they've played). Their goaltending appears to be weak though. If anyone was there, was Kalyvas simply dominant? I'm wondering if Mongolia had a chance if Kalyvas wasn't there
Damn Im proud of the South African Team! I actually have my hopes up high that they can go all the way this year! From seeing the score etc... It looks that they can do it! It is much better from previous years!

8 goals 1 assist for Kalyvas Dimitrios of greece against Mongolia. Is that a National team record for goals and points?
Great job by Luxembourg today. Philippe LePage is a beast. I wonder if Michel Welter could have made one or two extra saves. Luxembourg will medal. So much for DPRK cruising through Division III.
Well, my thoughts on the day.
MGL-GRE: Good showing by Kalyvas, and by Mongolia I think.. Altangerel (17) scores his first two world championship goals, I wish I could see how he's playing this year. Last year he was probably the most skilled member of the Mongolian team, but was lacking size and experience. Neguun I believe becomes the first Mongolian to score in multiple IIHF tournaments. For the record, while Mongolians have adopted family names (this is a relatively new occurence, just in the last decade or so, from what Pujee told me last year), they still generally go only by a single name: their given name. Goaltending does seem weak for MGL, and I suspect for GRE as well (which probably is waht partially accounts for their 4 goals).
TUR-RSA: Well, teh South Africans made me my money today. Very solid show, proving that the first game wasn't just a fluke. Seems a number of their apparently stronger players from past years (who didn't make the trip last year) are back and in fine form this year, there will definitely be another battle for promotion, and this year RSA will be in it.
PRK-LUX: What can I say here? Philippe LePage did what Philippe LePage does best: keeping his team in games that they frankly have no business being in. He did it against Ireland last year too, just once again his teammates just didn't have the available firepower to win the game. Still, great show, a HELL of a lot closer than I think anyone expected it to be. LUX will be in it for promotion, and we'll see if they can make up for last year's heartbreaker.
really interesting a lot of upsets will probably happen in the next few days
pictures videos anyone .......
I miss Europe already !!!!!!!!!!
Goaltending does seem weak for MGL, and I suspect for GRE as well (which probably is waht partially accounts for their 4 goals).
Perhaps Mongolia's weakness is inexeperience with 9 new players on this year's roster and a new coach. Most of them have not played in an international tournament. Greece played Fiotakis but I wouldn't have expected Mongolia to score four anyway.
It is nice to see Mongolia score :) Turkey definitely isn't the same without Ciplak
It is nice to see Mongolia score :) Turkey definitely isn't the same without Ciplak
Yep I agree and I hope that the absence of Ciplak will be a lesson for Turkish Ice Hockey Federation.. I am not exactly sure what the story is so if Mr Ciplak you are reading this Please be in the squad next season:c032: .. we need you there:)

To summarize the tourney so far...
DPR Korea and South Africa have the Gold and Silver locked up as well as the promotion to Div II.
If Greece can get the WIN over Turkey on Saturday and everthing else goes according to form..it will be Greece vs. Luxembourg for the Bronze Sunday night...
Regardless of the tournament outcome and taking into consideration tonights' effort from the Greeks vs. DOR Korea, a real good showing after a 9 year absence.
It sure would have been nice to see what the tournament outcome for the Greeks would have been had Apostolidis not been injured in Game 1. Thankfully Captain Kalyvas has put the team on his back and kept them alive for a Bronze medal as of this post. Oh well, nevertheless.....2009 will be here soon...

Sorry about that, I got it fixed now. You were right about that.
I hope RSA will win the game against Korea! That will be so nice! This means that we stand a chance at a gold medal and Promoting to Division 2!!!!
So Good Luck to SA, hope they win!
I think that, that game is deciding the 1st place so that will be the game of the tournament!

Now I have at all right.
Okay so.... any team can mathematically still win bronze.
RSA v PRK will PROBABLY be the gold-medal game, but even at that.... Turkey can still mathematically steal promotion from one of the two teams.
For some reason I want SA to win. :c256:
But good job for them! It's even amazing that they're dominating even w/o tyhe Reinecke brothers. Makes me think, who needs Jr.A players if these guys are fine?
The Reineckes played pretty well, but the two younger ones especially accounted for a lot of the team's penalty minutes. Looks like there's probably more team chemistry without them flying in just for the tourney.
I wish we can see Armenian playing in this tournament. Im sure they would have been able to pull off another medal, making that 2 for this year. O-well, i guess well just have to wait and see them next year.

Cengiz dont want to play because he is angry for federation. i hear like that. but we have good players like Onur Eroğlu and Emrah Özmen. This year our team play is better than last years.
Does it have something to do with that he is not an assistant coach for the U20 team?

How do you figure that? They lost to Greece in the qualifier, on the ice. What makes you think they'd be able to fare better now?
Guys, greetings from Lux I watched the matches last night and although we won I feel Turkey did not play that well, I spoke to the players and most felt the same still a win is a win:: It was also nice to see Greece score and towards the end we were rooting for Greece, the teqms are getting along well, so qm sure it will be a very nice tournament tomorrow, nice to hear that there will be more forum members on here tomorrow . There have been problems from the organisation from what I was told with the coach pickups. The pickups were not very well coordinated and the players had to make do with their own arrangements, Not good , Anywhoo bring on the matches; its been fun so far:c032:

A ton of shots in the Greece VS. Turkey, It's 6-1 Turkey, but the big story is the high number of shots, 43-34 in favor of Turkey. Despite the score, I bet their's been some testy moments in this game for sure.

Doesn't that mean that South Africa are Promoted too?
Doesn't that mean that South Africa are Promoted too?
If Mongolia can somehow upset South Africa in regulation time and Turkey win in 60 minutes, then Turkey is in by one point.
Doesn't that mean that South Africa are Promoted too?
Techinically not mathmetically, This is a scernario where if Turkey beats North Korea, and if Mongolia beats South Africa, then Turkey would get promotied. But, that would take some crazy stuff for that to happen.
So this means SA for promotion too? :c205:

But I did write a huge World Jewish Cup article you might find interesting over at www.insidehockey.com.
Also, I can give you links to pictures of the Israeli team at the 2005 Spartak Cup - I would dearly love to get a hold of those games.
Congrats to Greece for getting back to IIHF competition!
Well Marc I only have one game but if you add me on msn I'd be willing to send you the game. I have a friend who played for Canada in that tournament by the way - Cody Schinderman - he went to my elementary and high school lol...
the atmosphere was great laszt night good turnout from the Turkish fans although we were fewer in number we made more noise than the Greeks. Unfortunately our weakness was the number of penalties the guys need to pay attention to that against North Korea. Although we were down by two or three men the Turkish teams defence was well, though if it were a stronger team, we may be looking at a different score, and let nmore gals in. I was impressed with the goalie last night he did play well Steigs:c032:

The Greek team had its worst game, since the beginning of the tournament, with no excuses last night and lost 9-1 against Turkey. The Greek Team was not able to win despite the 500 Greek fans that travelled from all over Europe to support the team.

Here are some short clips from Luxemborg on youtube. From the one I watched, it seemed like more of a fans than a game, but some game clips. Unfortunately, they're only like 30-40 secs. long. Thought it was worth a post here though.

Looks like Greece has gone to back up goalie Ntalimpor Ploutsis for this game and halfway through the first, GRE or LUX has no SOG. Im sure that they are just not added to the web output but I find it hard to believe that neither team has a shot.

Good debut for Greece, they didn't get blown that badly in any of their games, they took Luxembourg to a shootout. Hopefully this can start to help grow awarness to the sport in Greece.
ouch they lost in OT
it was a nice try none the less
Luxembourg with their second bronze medal in as many years. Good job to RSA on the promotion. That's the tournament surprise IMO.
Most teams that I notice like DPR Korea, RSA & Turkey have a youthfull team. I guess a youthfull team is sometimes the key, eh?
Hi all!
back from Luxembourg tonite...
First of all, many thanks to Cady, Franco and Marc for reception!
WC was amazing for me: great atmosphere, especially for Luxembourg games, always sold out, in a good rink: tiny but very comfortable. Staff was really hearty and passionate, players and coaches of all teams (well, except Koreans..) extremely friendly. I made some interviews for Eurohockey that I'll post in next days.
Something about teams:
Mongolia:finished last but all people have seen Mongolians last year in Ireland were impressed by improvements. They had visa problems and some players and head coach can't reach Luxembourg, so they played with only 2 lines. Main limit is physic resistance: Mongolia always played well in first period but literally disappear from rink in second and third. Defender Tamir Bayasgalan and forward Altangerel Ichinnorov are two fairly good player but team have to work a lot with tactics and physic. Last winter wasn't so cold in Mongolia so team had problems to training due to lack of indoor rink, but a mongolian coach told the first indoor rink will be build already this year. My impression is: Mongolian team is very enthusiastic and evidently players learn quick, so in 5-6 years they will be serious competitor.
Greece: not really a team but a a group of players if understand what I mean. Was evident the lack of agonistic commitments: Greeks don't have a league neither chances to compete at international level and these deficiencies were showed in Luxembourg. They played good games with Luxembourg and Korea (score 3 goals vs Koreans isn't easy) but disastrous with South Africa and mainly Turkey. Demitrios Kalyvas (a canadian greek living in Montreal) is definitely the star of team, others are good amateurs. I think they should play in wichever league, in Turkey, Serbia or anywhere to learn what a competitive game is.
Turkey: As for Luxembourg I don't know if team was a delusion or not: I mean: Turkish have certainly some good players, goalie Ozbaydogan, forwards Eroglu, Yapicilar and Ozmen but terribly suffer of lack of concentration: game with Greece is a good example: they were cleary better, won 3-0 after 1st period but feel satisfied and allow a comeback to Greeks. Game was great because fans on standing were very noisy but this emotionally disturb Turkish players. At opposite they played very well in second period vs North Korea, without any pressure...A young team, if federation will work seriously they are destined to be promoted in few years (maybe next year). Ciplak is vital for this team, have to be recuperated.
Luxembourg: LUX staff was very disappointed for failed promotion but I think they can be happy for their excellent work: an hockey culture is rasinig there, people is proud of his national team, youths come watching games and play hockey, media gave attention to WC and a new generation of player is coming up: goalie Philippe Lapage is very promising, but also forwards Erich Wambach and Yves Dessouroux could have a bright future. In my opinion, except Korea, LUX was the best team I've seen on ice: very disciplinate, good puck passing (not so common at this level) and good technique: lack of experience is main fault
South Africa: really a surprise for me and for all. I've seen SA vs North Korea and they played very bad, was unbelievable for me how they can won previous 3 games, especially with Turkey. Some luck, a play very "canadian style", aggressive and physique, some good players: these are ingredients but I suspect South Africa campaign was a kind of "miracle on ice". In a close competition as WC (5 games in a week) not always best team prevailed. Goalies, the Bock brothers, are more pitoresque then incisive, strong points are forwards Michael Fraquet and Gareth Miller, very skilled and fast, and defender Nick Graf. Speaking with SA coach, he told me they face a lot of problems to arrange a decent team and play permanently. Lack of funds and government indifference block icehockey expansion. Best team off ice: always among the fans and always happy
North Korea: not many words to say: Koreans are a II Division team: more skilled, more organized, more professional, more concentrated, more fast then others. Only Luxembourg try to scare them. After the last game they let their hair down: some phtos with fans, some smiles, but for all the week they stay away from frisky and friendly atmosphere. Come at rink, play and go to hotel. A pity for a young and interesting team...
Got back late last night, although we had to spend yesterday traveling, so didn't see any games from the last day. Thoughts on the teams:
1. DPR Korea
Without doubt the best team here, but not without concern. For the first half of the tournament, their physical presence was non-existent. Against Luxembourg they dominated the game, had around 75%-80% of the possession, but could not score a goal. They improved drastically against South Africa, which I think took the Springboks by surprise. But, for sure, DPR Korea is a Division 2 team and shouldn't be at this level.
2. South Africa
I do think these guys were the 2nd best team, but they collapsed spectacularly against DPR Korea in their 4th game. They have a level of organization on the ice that I think only DPR Korea could match. Certainly the only other team that I felt consistently showed they could play as a team (game against DPR Korea, excepted). Spoke with their coach, Scot Ronnie Wood (architect of the original Sheffield Steelers), after the Korea game and he admitted that it wasn't a bad thing to get that result, as it has shown his team exactly what they are up against next year. But, a drastically improved team over 12 months ago, and hopefully Wood can keep them up in Division 2.
3. Luxembourg
An enigma. Absolutely no consistency. Should've hammered Turkey in the first game considering how bad the Turks played, but didn't. Then played out of their skins defensively to keep Korea off the scoresheet for so long in the 2nd game. Were the poorer team technically in the South Africa game, only a lack of South African fitness allowed the score-line to be so close and were taken to a shoot-out against a physically very tired Greece when a medal was on the line. There are flashes of brilliance from the team, and there are certainly some admirable players. But, they need to work out how to play 60 minutes a game, every game. Until they can do that, no improvement in their technical skills is going to help this team.
4. Turkey
I'm not sure that Ciplak was the problem here, certainly not on the ice. The Turks may have missed him in the dressing room, but goal scoring wasn't really the Turks problem here. Defensively, this team were a mess for long periods of the tournament, particularly in the early games; their comedy of errors being best shown by one of the defencemen kicking the puck into his own net and Ozbaydogan looking completely out of his depth. They did get better as the tournament went on, but you don't get to have a bad 2 games to start a 5 game tournament. Ultimately, a bunch of individual players with a coaching set-up that seems incapable of turning them into a team. The players are talented enough that a more disciplined coaching set-up could turn them into Division 2 regulars. But, on this performance, the problem was as much behind the bench as it was on it.
5. Greece
I didn't expect much from Greece, but they really surprised me. As you would expect for a team with an average the wrong side of 30 and from a country with no league, they didn't have the legs to play 5 games in 7 days. But they were better organised than I had expected. Again, not enough team play, but team play was never going to be the strong point for a nation that can only get together at tournaments.
6. Mongolia
Better than 12 months ago, but still the weakest team by some distance. I would actually disagree with Davide. In the Mongolian games that I saw, I didn't feel that Mongolia tailed off. I felt that I was watching a bandy team play ice hockey; they had the stamina for the game, but they lack the ability to get speed out of their first 3 steps and are clearly uncomfortable with how little space they have out there. They absolutely need an indoor ice rink, otherwise I can't see them getting closer to the teams above them.
The tournament itself was cosy, but I have to say it was not as well organised as the round in Ireland 12 months ago. The timekeepers bench certainly seemed to have problems and it just didn't feel as polished as Dundalk. Still, a very enjoyable way to spend a week!
Graham.

I also agree this may have been only my second tournament but had a great time, I was amazed at the interest, and was happy to meet some lovely bunch of people, and will have good memories..It was also good to meet Davide, Marc, Franco (again:)) and Graham:) Thanks all for the quality Ice Hockey chat, shame I could not say goodbye to you all, had to rush of to the airport, and we all know how bad it snowed on Sunday:)).. I was trying to advertise this great website to a lot of people..I was also impressed at how well the Greeks and Turks got along, players and supporters alike, would love to see them competing in the Turkish league, which will be a bit difficult I think but at least I hope that both federations can organise some friendlies..
The Turkish players also told me that the managent of DPR Korea, took away the players TVs from their rooms, and that their activities were planned like clockwork.. I agree Davide what a shame for the players not to be able to enjoy themselves, to get a smile out of them was practically impossible :c165:
Looking forward to reading the intervews..... Any ideas where next years DIv 3 will be?? Also before I forget apologies for the spelling mistakes from my two posts whilst in Lux, the internet cafe was naturally a French keyboard :))))

When I spoke to the Turkish Ice Hockey Federation President Mr Dokmeci, he informed me that the new Ice rink should open towards the end of the year.. Some of the players were saying that when the rink does open , they will compete and see if they can have it in Istanbul..

Regarding the tournament, Greece showed very very well and will be heard from next year. There really might have been a medal possibility had Apostolidis not been injured in the first couple minutes of the first game of the tournament. Of course we will never know....
Mongolia:finished last but all people have seen Mongolians last year in Ireland were impressed by improvements. 6. Mongolia

I'm going to agree with both of you on a couple points.
I'm in with Davide 100%, just based on what I saw last year. This was a team that got better from one game to the next, learning from what the team before them did and actually showing some tactical thought in attempting to stop their opponents. However, the lack of strength and speed hurt them at that point.
This year's scores definitely show some improvement, plus the fact that last year's best players also managed to find the net is a positive development, and a good sign for the future.
I have to agree with Graham though on the absolute need for more ice throughout the year for these players to have a chance to properly develop, and this new indoor rink will certainly help accomplish that.
All that being said, I have no doubt that with continued participation at both senior and junior levels, plus the indoor ice, the WC veterans in Mongolia will be able to impart what they learned while playing against tougher competition to their teammates and Mongolian hockey will greatly improve. Give it 5 or 6 years and I have no doubt at all that they will become competitors. Maybe not a promotion threat, but they'll find ways to win games. Remember Ireland 5 years ago?
The other thing I remember about Mongolia: their shots were overall the weakest of the field, and this in turn made their goaltending vulnerable to big shots from opponents... the goaltending seems to still be the weakest side of the MGL team...
DAVIDE..PLEASE NOTE...
You are incorrect on the above. D Kalyvas as well as almost the entire Greek Team live in Greece either in Athens or Thesaloniki.

Hi to Cady, Graham, Franco, Davide and all those I met there.

Hi, yes i might agree that RSA didnt do so well against DPRK but keep in mind that the first time the RSA team trained together was when they arrived in Luxembourg. They had one training session together before their first game against the greeks as apposed to the Koreans who have been training 5 days a week for probably the last year......Also if you only have 11 shots on goal how can you exect to win?? Korea was dominat in every department of the game over EVERY team at the tournament. They were the best team at the end of the day.
Davide can you explain what you mean by the goalies for RSA are more picturesque then incicive?
Also keep in mind that niether of the goaltenders for RSA have ever had specialised goalie coachies or training. Everything they have learnt and the way they play comes from teaching themselves, reading books on tecniques and watching other goalies on TV play.
And try not to overlook the fact that the season in South Africa runs from May to October therefore the worlds is out of season for them where the other teams are at the peak of their season.
"bigguySA": Your surname wouldn't be Bock by any chance? :-)
FWIW, I didn't think that the RSA netminders were a noticeable weak spot in the team. They certainly weren't significantly outclassed by any of the other netminders, Lapage included, since he seems to be getting far more credit than I think his consistency deserves. Both Springbok netminders clearly have massive 5-holes, but then you are always going to have a big 5-hole when you are that tall. But, then, their size brings benefits that a smaller netminder doesn't have, like the ability to clear your own crease and the amount of net that is covered. My only real advice would be to the RSA defence to try and force all shots against to be high to protect that 5-hole. There was nothing in either of the Bocks that made me feel that that would just expose other weak parts of their game.
And keep hold of Ronnie Wood. He's a good guy and will do wonders for the sport in your country.
Graham.
"bigguySA": Your surname wouldn't be Bock by any chance? :-)Where are you getting crazy ideas like that? :-)
Gary, convince Ashley (ashboe21) to come back to us.

Yeah it is.. Well our 5 holes are generally pretty good for such tall guys... it is an advanage been able to clear the crease purselves but id rather have defence that could do the job so i can concentrate on the shots.. its all good though
Welcome on board Bock!. I think practically everyone on the tournament was commenting on how tall you and your brother were. Well done on the promotion:)

Hey thank you for this Marc:).. Good thing I can speak French, and could understand it. :). Very interesting interview from an interesting coach:) Mr Maceachern actually told me that he knows of this website, so maybe he is reading this LOL.:c032: Nonetheless, Marc I am looking forward to the English translation, along with the other interviews:c239: .

If that's the case....
Coach MacEachern, please feel free to join us.
Jazz, I pimped the forum on our own forum to an active member of the international hockey community. Do I get the IHF's Club house password yet?

You know he told me posted here before, or that is what I remember but dumb Cady forgot to ask under which name.. Oh well. Keep on pimping the site. I also was pimping it to a good extend in Luxembourg:). Most of the Turkish players know of this site, and say they do read it, but I feel for some of them, their limited English language limits them from posting on in here:(..
All my photos are now at www.flyfifer.co.uk. They are also tagged with players names.
Graham.

Great , not wait.....actually amazing shootout goal here. Nikos Papadapolous (sorry, think I butchered name) makes an incredible shot in the shootout against Luxemborg.

Gotta love team reaction, especially coach Panos Efkarpidis
How come no high-res pictures of Graham, holding an index hat and beer, smiling into the camera?:c032:
