So what about the rumors that want Salzburg to join the new KHL?
Rumour: Theoren Fleury(/) - > Ljubljana
this is a rumour which is circling Slovenian (sports) papers for a couple of months. Mike Posma and Todd Elik are trying to get him to Ljubljana.

Sincerely I hope this will remain a rumour... Fleury didn't play this season and seems out of active hockey from time. Olimpija needs "real" players to continue to build a strong team...Fleury was a great player

The Austrian federation's portal eishockey.at reports that Zagreb (Medvescak I guess) and Maribor have applied to join EBEL. Next season will nevertheless be played with 10 teams. If any of the current clubs should drop out Zagreb which has a new ice rink would be able to join as a replacement right away so the report
http://www.eishockey.at/7603.html
Has Zagreb a new rink or did they mix it up with Maribor who are currently renovating and expanding theirs?
I guess for 2009/10 we will see a 12 team EBEL. To get the league more attractive I'd say a second Hungarian team would be fine as well so that Alba has a local rival also.
Furthermore:
Christoph Brandner (Hamburg) -> Klagenfurt
One of the greatest players Austria ever produced is returning. Brandner was the first Austrian skater to crack the NHL and also to score a goal there. This is remarkable for a small hockey country like Austria because he only left with 25 when he went to play in Germany. I guess it has not happened all too often recently that a player who was entirely trained in a non-elite country made an NHL roster.
Yes Rex, they have a new rink. It's a multifuctional hall with 20k seats and it will host the next handball worldcup.
Here is a link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zagreb_Arena
Sry for double post, but what about Anže Kopitar?
RexKramer

Wow, a 20k seat arena...that'd be about 5 times the capacity of the average EBEL arena...
Sry for double post, but what about Anže Kopitar?
I'm sure there's some players from non-elite country who made the NHL without ever having played in an elite country during their youth/junior days. But Kopitar played junior hockey in Sweden I guess so he's not on that list.
I think the first ever NHLer of AUT Reinhard Divis is another example...probably also one of the Norwegians (Thoresen, Tollefsen) or one of the Latvians...
There's quite some guys in the NHL from non-elite countries but it is interesting to see which guys made it without having been trained in an elite country before, so to say guys who made it out of their dometic systems without any "development aid" ;-)

As was already a topic here "Kleine Zeitung" has published an interview with EBEL president Karl Nedwed. Nedwed says he is not satisfied with how the final ended calling the forfeit against OLL in game #4 "unfortunate". He added that it was nevertheless Olimija's fault who had approved all regulations of the league.
Furthermore Newed confirmed that EBEL will break the ties to the Austrian federation following the example of DEL where only the league itslef decides about issues like import players, TV rights, marketing and point allocation rule (for wins resp. OT wins/losses).
Here's the story (in German):
http://www.kleinezeitung.at/sport/eishockey/1094589/index.do
Imho a foreseeable and good move. The Austrian federation was more a burdn for the league than a help. Now they got the chance to prove that they can do better and give the league an appropriate structure. Of course the federation has to sanction this move (via its recognition by the IIHF and the Austrian state as official governing body it has competences over several issues that are important for the league) but I guess they will find a solution which will most likely be a financial compensation for OEHV).
Interesting times, hope the league starts to work more efficient and adopts good/better rules than previously.

Transfer news:
Alex Westlund will play for Linz next season. Rumours of this transfer were already coming up some weeks ago and actually Westlund has already signed the contract then but the parties agreed to reveal the deal only after the season's end. Westlund is reported to be paid more than in Linz than in Ljubljana but had he waited a little longer his bargaining position would have become even better as Olimpija drew considerable extra money to keep Westlund (not to mention Davos going after him as well).
Furthermore, Pat Leahy has extended his contract with Linz.

VSV is trying to sign the twins Cris and Cameron Abbott from Frisk Asker of Norway's elite league. But apparently also clubs from Sweden and Germany want to sign the duo so Villach (which has one of the smaller budgets in EBEL) is not too likely to succeed.

Just curious...
..how does the Norwegian Elite League compare with the EBEL?
Just curious...
..how does the Norwegian Elite League compare with the EBEL?
It's hard to compare both leagues as I cannot remember any games played between clubs of both leagues recently. I have not seen Norwegian Elite League games but I guess (after looking at international preseason game results) that top teams of EBEL are a bit better than Norwegian elite league teams and EBEL is more balanced.
There was a discussion about the strength of the Norwegian league in here:
http://forums.internationalhockey.net/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=5198
Further transfer news:
Denfenseman Lee Sweatt (http://www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=117980) (TPS Turku, SML) will join Salzburg. Further the transfer of Jermey Rebek from KAC to Salzburg has been confirmed.

League comparison has been over and over debated here.
Myself and Karsten have developed procedures to build a ranking/comparison of clubs/leagues based on preseason game scores.
Norway's Get Ligaen teams have played a lot of games against Danish AL league teams and (as I aggregated it but the results are not ambiguous at all) the Danish league dominates this comparison.
Danish teams and EBEL teams did not play directly against each other except AAB vs. Salzburg in Continental Cup. AAB (in the top three of AL at that time) won this game but Salzburg was at an extended losing streak during that phase.
But Danish AL and EBEL teams both played DEL teams (though not in big numbers) and the EBEL teams fared better in this comparison. By this I would say that EBEL is at least as good as the Danish league if not better and thus clearly stronger then the Norwegian league.
From a purely intuitive pov I'd say that both Norwegian and EBEL teams have substantial parts of their rosters made up of import players. If we look at these it is quite abvious that EBEL imports are typically of a higher caliber than those in Norway. Given that Norway, where hockey is a comparably small sport than in EBEL countries has to supply 10 teams with domestic players (and the best Norwegians typically play abroad - which is not so much the case for the best Austrian players, the Red Bull effect ;-) whereas EBEL draws its domestic players from three countries (Hungary 1, Slovenia 2, Austria 7) I'd conclude that the Norwegian league is weaker than EBEL at the top and even more at the bottom (like Toni who just needed much fewer words than I to go come tht far ;-)

Hi Buddy!
You're probably right but if we have a look at what these 5-10 goals cost they're not cheap at all ;-).
Westlund in turn should be really cheap for Linz. Latest news said that he was signed by Linz already in November (which was kept secret) long before his market value skyrocketed due to his stellar play-off performance. But I guess the story's not over yet. Contracts are contracs but if a player doesn't want to comply with it it's better to let him go and Westlud has every reason to leave Linz resp. renegotiate the terms there.
The league comparison debate (which was more a methodological one) is somewhere in the general world wide hockey forum (called on how to compare leagues).
But you are following the Norwegian league as I noticed - what's your opinion?

News from Graz:
Three Austrian players (Claus Dalpiaz, Patrick Mössmer and Stefan Pittl) have stated that the 99ers have not yet paid all their salaries for the last season and will seek legal advice soon if the matter is not resolved. Graz' import players on the other hand are reported to have received their full salaries and despite this issue the club has announced further signings for the upcoming season. The Norwegian national team defensman Tommy Jakobsen will add another year in the Styrian capital city. Jakobsen is a key player for Graz and overall a top defenseman in EBEL. Furthermore, Graz has confirmed signing Philippe Horsky (KAC).
The fact that Jakobsen stays in Graz with a team that ended at the bottom of the league year after year imho shows clearly that even there he can make more money than by returning to Norway. But with the signing of a prominent coach like Bill Giligan maybe next season things change to the better in Graz.

The same situation happened at Olimpija, where a few slovenian players didn't get paid in the last months, as well as Alex Westlund...

Hey Rex! My opinion is that the Norwegian league is not at EBEL's level, but not terribly far behind, either. The top teams such as Valerenga, Storhamar and Frisk would have no problems playing in EBEL and would likely be better than the bottom few EBEL teams. Then again, the bottom few Get-Ligaen teams would get crushed in EBEL.
Nightmare - ha ha. :-) When Rex and I met in New York City a few weeks ago, that was his prediction if the two were to ever match up. LOL
Depends, in all seriousness, on whether the Rangers care about playing Magnita, which I suspect that they will not. As I have explained in the past, it is a matter of perspective. For Magnita, it's a chance to knock off an NHL team. The NHL is universally regarded as the world's premier hockey league since the breakup of the Soviet Union. So, Magnita's motivation would be obvious. For the Rangers, it is an exhibition game, a training warm-up practice, and the last one before the real NHL season begins. For that reason, they may rest their starters, and, if they do allow their starters to play, they are very unlikely to go 100% and risk injury in what is for them a game with no prestige.
If the Rangers gave 100%, I have no doubt that they would win 8 out of every 10 from Magnita or any RSL team. As for EBEL teams, they would have no chance, barring a divine miracle, of beating the Rangers.
As a huge Rangers fan, I'm very critical of the Rangers' performance....but that is in the context of the NHL.
Back in Soviet days, it was honestly open for debate as to whether the Soviet league or the NHL was the world's best. My take is that the very top few Soviet teams were better than NHL teams, but the NHL had more overall depth and strength (i.e., mid table and low end NHL teams were better than mid table and low end Soviet teams). Since Russians are now free to play in the NHL - and, for the most part, the best Russians do play in the NHL - there is no debate as to which league is the world's best. Look, Yashin is a huge star in the RSL this season and he was unwanted by all 30 NHL teams this past season.
Can a RSL team knock off an NHL team here or there? Of course. So could a team from any of Europe's top seven leagues. But the odds are very, very heavy that a motivated NHL team would win almost all of its games against non-NHL teams. I'd still love to see an NHL team - especially the Rangers - play the Spengler Cup.
It would also be a lot of fun to see the L.A. Kings play against Acroni in Jesenice - think the Acroni fans would come out to see that if Kopitar was in the Kings lineup?

Very, very few NBA teams have ever lost a game to a non-NBA team (other than the Toronto Raptors, LOL).

There were a lot of Jesenice fans travelling to Salzburg to see Kings in action, so there is no doubt the Podmežakla hall would be packed if Kings came to Jesenice. It was the same when Russia and USA came to the town.
Anyway, Kevin Mitchell is supposed to be in the same position as Westlund - they both signed pre-contracts with Linz back in November (or December, as it's stated in Slovenian media), but Westlund said that he needed a change and that he felt it was the right thing to do (to move to Linz), while Mitchell wants to break his agreement with Linz and stay in Ljubljana for another season or two.

In 06 and 07, most of those losses were by Toronto....regardless, the winning percentage for NBA teams vs. FIBA teams is overwhelming - as is the NHL's winning percentage against non-NHL teams (not counting Soviet era Soviet league teams).

Vienna Capitals and Jesenice continue to exchange players: Paul Healy (HKJ) -> Vienna
Graz99ers have a new board to lead the club. Engineering entrepreneur Jochen Pildner-Steinburg will remain president and main sponsor. The club's manager Sylvia Priversek who can be credited for founding the 99ers and getting them back into the highest Austrian league which ended the city's absence from competitive hockey after the predecessor club went broke will remain with the 99ers as consultant. Priversek was often blamed to be mainly responsible for the poor management that troubled the club since almost ever.
Furthermore, EBEL will apparently get a new playing format. The placement and qualification group stages will be dropped, the league will return to a normal 3 home and away round robin series (54 regular season games) followed by the play-offs.

Apparently? Thats quite an old news. Some Slovene media had reported this weeks ago. Slovenian medias are also reporting that in the playoff there will be series best of 7 from the start to the end. This new format is a lot better then the old one!

VSV has reported on their website that they came to an agreement with brothers Chris and Cameron Abbot (previously Frisk Asker/NOR). The contract shall be signed tomorrow.
http://vsv.linea7.com/de/news/newsdetails/article/7/die-adler-rue.html
This is somehow surprising as also (among others) several Swedish clubs have been trying to sign the Abbots who rocked the Norwegian league in the past season.
I Think the import limit is lower in Sweden than in Erste Bank Liga so I think that would
(a) Mean they are very choosy as to who they sign
(b) Becasue of (a) makes it less likely the 2 brothers could play in the same teamin Sweden

I think they will try to get as much of a salary as possible. And a condition for any club to sign them is the "them" ;-).
Today VSV has announced that the news that the club has come to an agreement with the brothers has caused some kind of uproar in the northern parts of Europe and today the Abbpts have withdrawn their agreement with VSV and have asked for one more day to consider before they would sign the contract (VSV coach Huras is taking care of the matter in Canada). Apparently the reason is that upon the news of them signing for Villach some swedish club has increased its offer. I am pretty sure that Villach (although one of the lesser spending teams in Austria) could outbid any Norwegian or Danish club but if tan Eliteserien team joins the competition this will mean second place.
But a good bargaining strategy from the two players (or their management).
1 year contract with Rögle BK - confirmed by the Abbott brothers, but not yet signed, so... Apart from Rögle, it is primarily Luleå which has been interested in signing the brothers.

Yes, has also been noticed here...VSV fans are disappointed they have already summed up the points the two were supposed to score ;-)
Will be interesting to see wheter they really sign for Rögle or climb up the ladder even further.
I think their contract with Rögle is a done deal. Apparently, Rögle is the only Swedish club which has been really interested in signing the brothers. Luleå has also been mentioned, but since Luleå – and, for that matter, any other Elitserien club - could easily have outbidded Rögle's offer(s), there has not been so much Swedish interest in the Abbott brothers as reported in the Norwegian (and Austrian?) press. There has been many examples of players who were top players in the Norwegian league but busted when they stepped up to Elitserien. If, however, the brothers succeeed in Rögle next season, they may be able to make it to one of the richer Elitserien clubs. I think its fair to say that the established Elitserien clubs that might be interested have adopted this wait-and-see approach on the Abbott brothers. The length of the contract - 1 year - also indicates a cautious approach on both sides.

Makes sense. People in Villach (including their GM) are just mad that the bros have apparently already agreed to the terms proposed (and thus in fact established a valid contract) before they chose to go with Rögle. But that's the business. Will be interesting to see how they will fare with Rögle.
Austrian clubs had good experiences up to now with Norwegian top scorers - without Greg Day Graz would probably have been even behind Alba Volan.

With all the IIHF action of the previous weeks there's been no time for updates on EBEL but some things have happened in the meantime.
First of all, the league and the Austrian federation will not go seperate ways as was discussed at the end of the season. EBEL will stay under the governance of OEHV confirmed league president Nedwed in an interview during the div. I tournament in Innsbruck.
Furthermore, the fight about the point system and the U22 import players (who shall cost 2 points if I remember correctly) is still not over. OEHV dislikes the U22 import players but several clubs insist on that and threaten to ignore the decrease of the overall point limit to 60 (from 65) if the federation doesn't approve the U22 imports. Nothing new concerning the league's trouble to organize itself smoothly...
But as a result of the Olimpija case an early warning system for game rosters will be introduced in order to avoid such problems. At least something.
Scheduling will also not be as easy as was hoped for due to the relegation of Slovenia from the A pool. So the season will/should be shortened in order to allow Slovenia a proper preparation for the mission to re-promote.
Of course there's also been a number of player transfers but I somehow lost track of that...

Thanks Davide, good overview but unfortunately it neglects the non-Austrian EBEL clubs....
Anyway, further news:
Vienna Capitals:
Raffael Rotter the 21yr old prospect from Vienna has decied to return home after the years in the Ontario Hockey League. Rotter was given an import as well as an overage spot this year by his team (Guelph) and he paid back with 59 scorer points in the regular season and 10 more in the play-offs (in as many games which made him Guelph's PO top scorer). Last year he had produced 62 points in the regular season and if he had further icreased this mark he probably would have had a future in North America despite his small size. But with a dire first season half this year he apparently denied himself this chance.
But for Vienna Capitals Rotter may well be a cornerstone of the years to come. This is not only because he is a hard working and skilled player (which we will surely see soon also on the national team I guess) but also because he might be the the up and coming high profile local born and trained player on a team that is in big need for guys the fans can identify with as the overemphasized reliance on import players as currently pursued by the Cap's management drove all the top Viennese players away (except Raimund Divis who actually returns to Vienna after almost playing his whole pro career somewhere else).
Furthermore, the Caps have extended the contract with their forward Trevor Gallant and I read that Doug Lynch (formerly Salzburg) has signed for the Caps.
Graz 99ers:
A little bit off topic but nevertheless connected with EBEL there are some news from Graz. The 99ers have hired Vanek (Zdenek, Thomas father) as head coach and manager of the youth department. The 99ers youth hockey program, despite having produced some decent players in he recent past (most of them now playing in Linz ironically), has detriorated over the last couple of seasons and it can only be hoped that the restructuring gets it back on track. Vanek is surely a capable man and the club expects that his name alone will give the program a new drive. Furthermore, the 99ers have also hired Peter Znenahlik (former player and also coach) as scout and special coach for the club's best junior players. Znenahlik's main task will be helping the club's prospects to bridge the gap between junior and professional senior hockey with additional practice sessions. Sounds good, let's see if it works.
With Zdenek Vanek the 99ers also have hopes to do better on the transfer market for their pro team than in the past as Thomas Vanek is thought to supply his father and thus the club with hints about players that don't make it to establish themselves in the NHL and are willing to go to Europe.
Red Bulls Salzburg:
The Red Bulls have announced their preseason schedule. Additional to their own preseason tournament (Red Bulls Salute, see the summer tournaments thread for info) they will play the following games:
Wed 27.08.08 HC Lugano/SUI - EC Red Bull Salzburg
Fri 29.08.08 EV Zug/SUI - EC Red Bull Salzburg
Sat 30.08.08 SC Bern/SUI - EC Red Bull Salzburg
Sun 31.08.08 SC Langnau/SUI - EC Red Bull Salzburg
The game against Bern will be the opening game in the then to be renovated Bern Arena which will also host IHWC 2009.
Mon 08.09.08 Malmö Redhawks/SWE - EC Red Bull Salzburg
Tue 09.09.08 Rögle BK/SWE - EC Red Bull Salzburg
Thu 11.09.08 Färjestad BK/SWE - EC Red Bull Salzburg
Sat 13.09.08 Linköpings HC/SWE - EC Red Bull Salzburg
Pretty ambitious program I'd say.
Rex, Toni...
Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere (couldn't find it), but why (and how) did Jürgen Penker end up with Totempo Hvik - one the lesser teams in the Danish league? Seems that he had a good season with Linz in 2007-08 and he also played with the national team in the 2008 Div 1 IHWC. What's the story?

I have not heard about it yet but honestly it doesn't surprise me at all.
Penks indeed played quite well last season but I assume he costs close to 4 points in our outmost stupid player evaluation system which is the same as imports cost. And if you have some money (which EBEL teams have) you rather go and get a Westlund, Labbé, Stömberg, Kotyk etc... But then due to the point limit of now 60 for the whole roster (65 last season) the teams will take the risk and go with a junior/underage goaltender as back-up (costs only 1 point) in order to save point contingent for the skater department. Because of this some decent league fit goalies here were forced out of EBEL teams either to retirement, Nationalliga or now abroad as in the case with Penker.
I think Penker is a good guy although I have the slight suspicion that this season (really good performance but showed some weakness in the PO) was maybe an outlier. In the preparation to the div. I IHWC he was however also quite good (made a better impression than Brückler who was shaky in all his games). So if he maintains last season's level Totempo has found a decent netminder, no doubt.
One more reason for me to follow Hvik as I am a "Hvidövrian" somehow after spending a lot of time with Hvidövre Kajak Klub last year (I was racing for them and have found some good friends there).
Wow! That was complicated. But thanks for your elaborate answer.

560 NHL games with 200pts, then 81pts in 108 SM Liiga games sound quite good...bigsigning I'd say. Makes appetite for hockey in Innsbruck, apparently things run well under Kennedy.
Innsbruck also got invited to the Mercure cup in Nuremberg. Participants are Nuremberg, Straubing, Rapperswil and Innsbruck.

Further signings in Innsbruck:
Steve Guolla (CDN) (http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=8290) comes from HIFK Helsinki where he played with Rem Murray. Centerman Guolla had 105 pts in 99 games in his two seasons in Helsinki - sounds pretty good.
Rich Brennan (USA) (http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=13637) will join HCI coming from Nuremberg Ice Tigers. His stats seem pretty good as well but fans in Nuremberg are apparently happy that the defenseman leaves as he is said to be very slow and prone to take penalties because he's often outskated.
League news:
Due to Slovenia being relegated the league loses three weeks of playing time said league president Nedwed and national team activities (Olympic qualification tournaments in February, preparation tournaments in November) further constrain the scheduling. EBEL will therefore start as early as never before (19. September) and feature a lot of Tuesday games to accomodate the 54 regular season games (3 home and away round robin series). The qualification stage played this year will be scratched after 54 games the play-offs follow directly after. Furthermore it was reported that a majority of clubs wants to stick with the 2-0 (regulation time win, reg. time loss) resp. 2-1 (OT/SO win, loss) point system rather than to adopt the internationally usual 3-0, 2-1 rule.
Negotiations with the playe point system still go on. The federation demands a reduction of the pint limit to 60 (from 65) and the (or some) clubs wnat to thave 2 U22 imports for only 2 instead of 4 points each which the federation objects. As a reaction the clubs threaten to boycott the overall point limit reduction.
Tomaz Vnuk, the 37 year old captain of Olimpija Ljubljana has extended his contract for two seasons. With 54 points in 56 games he was Olimpija's best scorer last season.

Doesn't look too bad for Slovenia... errrr.... jesenice.
I'm glad to see that they're able to attract some of the bigger domestic names to the roster, but looks like this will once again leave Olimpija thin on the domestic side, forcing them to rely on import players again.
All that being said, it looks really good on Jesenice if they can be competitive with a roster comprised of mostly domestic players with only a couple imports thrown in.
Now there are two steps that remain:
1. get rid of that godawful point rule that effectively restricts the use of domestic seniors.
2. close the transfer window before the "second round" of the regular season to avoid a team loading up on expensive imports for only the last third of the season to try and save money.

@transfer window
There will be no second round this season, just a 54 games regular season with a 8 team playoff. As far as I know there will be no changes regarding the transfer deadline but there are some points which should help that there won't happen too many changes this season:
A team may only have 22 registered players + 5 players parked in a farm team (e.g. HK Jesenice Mladi in the Slovenian league) + U20 players. So if a player is signed during the season another player has to be dropped. The number of changes is limited (I don't have the exact number at the hand now).
If there was a trade deadline in december I would be pretty happy with this part of the rules.
@point rule
no comment :c105:
@Jesenice
The team reminds me a lot of the 06/07 team. A problem could be the goaltender position. Hocevar looked not bad last season but is he able to carry a team for a whole season?
Toni, the single-round works better.
When all teams restarted the second round with nearly-equal points it was much easier for a team to use an awful roster for the first half which they would pay little for, then stack their team in teh second half and use up much of hte budget room they saved at first to pay for this upgraded roster.
At least now the early games will count just as much as the late ones and that should help competitiveness. I hope.
Jesenice has indeed similar roster to 06/07, with a few big differences - players have two years of experiences and the team knows what is infront of them. Two years ago, we 'lost' the season in the start, when Jesenice had some bad luck with goalies (loosing quite a few games 5-6, 6-7, etc...) and when we started without foreigners (later on Aaron Fox and Jean Phillipe Pare joined the team).
Anyway, I'm confident that this will indeed be the best Jesenice team in their short history. One top defensive defenceman should still be added and I still think one top goalie would be nice. Maybe Robert Kristan returns to Jesenice, he is believed to be waiting for NHL draft to take place and then he will make a decision (should he be drafted, then he will certanly move overseas, otherwise there is quite a chance that he returns home).
Jesenice certanly has a team, capable of challanging for the so desired semi finals.
A problem could be the goaltender position. Hocevar looked not bad last season but is he able to carry a team for a whole season?
Hočevar is for me as good as Kristan...he just didn't get the opportunity to play regularly untill now...it was a funny thing with the two slovenian clubs last season as they didn't trust the domestic players even if they had the qualitiy to play in EBEL...Olimpija had a pretty decent fourth line (at least to spend some minutes on the ice), but they rarely got any playing time (for instance Hočevar got the opportunity to play in second and third line as late as in playoffs and proved himself to be very useful...more useful than Felsner, for example)
On the other side, Jesenice last season played great hockey with mostly domestic roster (there were 3 or 4 imports) throughout the regular part of the season and they have even been on the first place for a long period...then, before the second round they brought a few imported "reinforcements"...a few of the domestic players that dominated the league, were sent to farm team (the reason was, that they are not good enough to play in EBEL, even though they were at that time at the leading spot)...and the results went rapidly downwards + they were relegated as early as the quarter-finals..
There are a few more very decent players still in Slovenia (+ some slovenian players playing abroad, who could play in EBEL) and it's a shame they have been neglected in the recent period..

Graz 99ers have announced their preseason schedule:
14. - 17. August: BIFROST-Cup in Bratislava (particpating teams: HC SLOVAN Bratislava, HC Moeller Pardubice, HC Kosice, Södertälje SK und Hamburg Freezers)
23. August: Krefeld Pinguins (away)
24. August: Landshut Cannibals (away)
29. August: HK Dukla Trencin (away)
4. September: Acroni Jesenice (away)
5. September: Alba Volan Szekesfehervar (home)
13. September: Acroni Jesenice (home)
Strong opponents throughout, good program. Graz with Bill Giligan are (once again) trying to get away from being on the losing side again and again. I'm curious if they will achieve something this time.
Marketing agency CM Sports and ex-skiing champion Jure Košir, that were supporting team Acroni Jesenice for the past two years, have decided to step down and out of Jesenice hockey. Their contribution was believed to be around 450,000 EUR and this money is now in question. What will be the consequences remains to be seen.
Acroni Jesenice have announced their final preseason schedule:
26.8.: Briancon (France, home)
28.8.-31.8.: Poletna liga Bled (VSV, Olimpija and final/third place game)
4.9.: Graz 99ers (home)
7.9.: EHC München (Germany, home)
9.9.: Liwest Linz (away)
11.9.: Liwest Linz (home)
13.9.: Graz 99ers (away)
Not too spectacular preseason schedule for Jesenice, surprisingly there will be no traditional games against KAC and VSV (apart from Bled tournament). Also a game against Rögle (SEL) was planned, while season opener should be a game against VSV on 24th. Now the season starts two days later with the game against French Briancon.

In a TV report for a local cable station showing Black Wings Linz captain Philipp Lukas at gym training to prepare for the upcoming season he complains that Linz despite having a new training rink has a too long summer break without ice (3-4 months). I think this shows where some of the probems in Austrian hockey are to be found. No ice means no training...and what makes athletes improve? Training...
In Vienna there is something similar going on, since last year only one of the city's 4 indoor rinks has ice during the summer, before it used to be two. No objection against 2 months break, there's a lot one can do off the ice to improve but 4 months is too long.
But at least there is some evidence that the ice rink situation in Vienna will at last be improved. There's way too many teams (especially in the booming rec hockey department) for only four indoor rinks but as was mentioned in last weeks general assembly of the Vienna hockey federation a new rink shall be built. Details to be made public after the EURO. But as such rumours were popping up regularily in the past I'll only believe it once I have carved the ice in the new rink myself.
In the meantime the only relief on the rink situation comes with a (at least superficially) sad reason. EHC Team Wien, Vienna's team in the tier II Nationalliga (founded only last year in an effort to reorganize youth hockey in Vienna and to link junior hockey better with the Vienna Capitals pro team) will not play in Nationalliga next season. Team Wien has protested against a new rule of Nationalliga that disallows moving players between EBEL teams and their Nationalliga farm teams (which Team Wien is for the Capitals) after 31.12. of each season. This rule makes sense from the pov of the independent Nationalliga teams who wanted to object distortion of the competition in the league by the fluctuating rosters of the farm teams (TW and especially Red Bulls II) who show up with very different rosters depending on whether the senior EBEL team plays on a given day or not. From the point of view of giving young players the opportunity to mature in Nationalliga in order to ease transition from junior to senior hockey the rule is clearly counterproductive. Red Bulls and Team Wien protested and let the deadline to enter a team for the league pass thinking that if 2 of 9 teams threaten to leave the rule would be dropped. But this was not the case and Salzburg left the coalition with Team Wien and entered the team within the prolonged deadline. Team Wien failed to do so and now is out wich is nice for the big fraction of Nationalliga teams from Vorarlberg (4 teams from the very West of Austria) who spare themselves the longest away trip.
Hockey enthusiasts in Vienna are also not too sad about the failure of TW. The project's goal (concentrating the best players of W-EV and Junior Capitals in a joint Vienna team on U17 and U20 level as well as icing a Nationalliga team to bridge the gap between juniors and seniors) was good but the execution was miserable. Team Wien mastermind Herbert Haiszan (former nat. team player), a controversial figure with limited success in his coaching career, managed to get cross with a lot of important and productive people in the Vienna hockey community which lead to a severe deterioation of youth hockey in Vienna. From the current u20 and u17 the best players fled Vienna and now there is a big gap in the junior teams. W-EV and Junior Caps have reacted to the failure of TW and have chosen to run their own U17 and U20 teams again which will be hard as a consequence of many players' exodus (or quitting hockey at all). If TW now also doesn't manage to ice a Nationalliga squad the clubs fate could be sealed and something new and better could emerge.
A little bit off topic but still related to EBEL...just found no better thread to post this.

All I know is that he was negociating with 2 teams in the Austrian league...and 1-2 teams in the other countries.
Actually he was ready to go to Denmark, but he was caught 'off guard' with some 'non-extras' in his contract, thus he changed his mind and went to France...
However, the season hasn't started, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's yet another change of venue before September.

Linz has replaced some of their veteran players (Tiley (71), Groleau (73), Ignatjevs (70), Salfi (71), ...) and reaplaced them mostly with younger guys (Seeley (79), Lainer (86), Lukas (78), Pallestrang (90), Helminen (85), ...). The weak spot could be the inexperienced defense but I hope Alex Westlund in goal will help them out. The attacking lines should be at least as strong as last years team.

I completely agree with Toni. Imho this defense corps is worryingly inexperienced and lacks guys who can orchestrate the game and bring stability when things get tough. BW fans mostly praise the clubs policy of building a very young team without a lot of imports but I think though this squad has quite some potential they will have to learn their lessons first. Hope that the fans don't lose their patience. I for my case would have liked to see Groleau for instance remain with the team...but you never know. Maybe some of the youngsters as Alexander Pallestrang (a "close relative" of the young man is btw a member of our board - maybe we get some insider information ;-) who is said to be one of the most talented defensman in his age class make the step into EBEL. Not an easy task but for the trio of Hirn, Pallestrang and Maier (all originally from Feldkirch) it is the right time I guess.

Lots of imports plus some young players (partially only to satisfy the rules, Gruber and Teppert especially I guess won't see too much ice time). Raphael Rotter could get an impact player. With Raimund Divis another Viennese trained player returns to this roots (interstingly he has never played senior hockey in Vienna). Labbe recovered from his injury, in the case of another one I can't imagine that Weisskircher will play for more than a couple of games.

Some reknown veterans that have to get back to shape (Iob and Jan both were worthless last year). New imports seem at least partially promising. The domestic player department is still too crowded with 3rd and 4th liners. Youngster Michael Schiechl (from Zeltweg via Leksands) could be an exception. Biggest name so far is the new coach - and he will have to bring some more imports to get rid of the bottom ranks.

Mike Craig has moved around a lot, eh?
I thought Aaron Fox was returning to Jesenice?
Dov Grumet-Morris was absolutely dominant in the ECHL and solid in limited AHL action. He was also the gold medal winning goalie for the U.S. in the 2007 World Jewish Cup.
Marc..what about Mike Morrison, new Olimpija golie? Last year was playing for Bridgeport Sound Tigers in AHL. Any thoughts??

I don't think Ottawa will be quite as bad as you think this year.
The blueline might look a little weak, but we've seen in Pittsburgh that big names don't make a strong blueline all the time, and that the little guys can raise their game.
Sens look strong up front, I think... a new bit of chemistry could work wonders, especially now with a little divisiveness out of the way (Emery).

Mike Morrison, when he is playing his best, is good enough to play in the NHL.
When he plays his worst, he struggles in the ECHL.
He is very inconsistent.
However, on average, he clocks in as a solid AHL-level goalkeeper, which means that he will be absolutely dominant in EBEL.
He is better than Westlund and Labbe, if that helps.

Only 5 imports up to now (another one is supposed to be added). The longtime imports and pillars of the team Bousquet and Gauthier are gone and imho neither Ferland and especially not Cavanaugh seem to have the potential to replace them adequately. The other imports from last year (Edgerton and Brown) are gone as well, Brown wants to stay in Villach and is rumoured to have offered his services for next to nothing...The Austrian VSV veterans Lanzinger, Kromp are not getting younger, and there's just a few established players in their prime (Kaspitz, Peintner, Pfeffer...). So the bulk of youngsters, who did well last season will have to step up even more in order to save VSV from falling in the ranks.

AV lost some well established players I thought would stay with the team in EBEL (Kangyal, Budai, Gröschl). Surprise is that some of those were signed by other Hungarian clubs so either AV wanted to get rid of them or the club's status as #1 in the country is not as uncontested as I thought. If I got the roster somehow correct things do not look very good for AV. There are no higher profile additions up to now and I do not have too much faith that the bulk of youngsters has what it takes to make the team competitive in EBEL (no offense intendend of course). The team desperately needs more of the Ocskay, Palkovics, Galvins caliber to prevail. Maybe I am too pessimistic but as I see it without at least 3-4 more (and big signings) AV is doomed to be dead last which is not good.

Agreed.
Mo's very relaxed in net and takes up a lot of space. Not overly physical, but he does defend his space. He doesn't over play the puck.I really enjoy watching him in breakaways and shootouts. He's superb at them.
He's also funny as heck to watch.
If he lets in a goal really early, it's probably going to be a bad night. If he stones to opposition for the first 20 or so, it's probably going to be a really good night. His inconsistency has more to do with mental focus than anything.
Is there a place online to listen to EBEL games?
Mo's one of my favorite goalies and I've been following his career since the beginning. I'd love to be able to listen to a few games. As long as they're in German or English, I'm good to go. :)

This is really very far even from a preliminary roster. For example, Matic Kralj is not with the team since march. Kóger is not confirmed yet since he has an offer from Volán but still has a meeting left with Salzburg management. Galvins is on tryout with Dinamo Riga.

Graz 99ers have signed the Canadian centerman Layne Ulmer who previously played for the Fankfurt Lions. Ulmer has scored 27 pts in 56 games last season of which he played 20 in defense. Good signing I would say. Still the 99ers need more talent and depth in their offense department but I think they are on the way o fleaving the league basement. For the upcoming season the team will apparently also get a new design. A new website is under development (a provisonal site hinting to the new design is already online) and I guess also the team uniforms will be new. Seems as though the colors (black, grey, orange) will remain. This might be minor issues but for me it is the clear sign that the club is desperately trying to get rid of the bottom dweller existence and image it has built up in the last years. The team they are building seems at least semi promising and all the innovations (more emphasis on junior department, new design) that have been announced sound good as well. If the aim not to finish outside the playoffs is not reached this timeI have the suspicion that the 99ers will be history after this season.

It is not really the London Knights OHL team that is taking on EBEL teams this pre-season.
Rather, it is some current Knights players (presumably both returnees and new rookies) mixed with five Knights alumni now playing pro in the AHL, and also Sam Gagner (an NHL player for Edmonton and Knights alumnus).
This is from the Knights' website:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
By RYAN PYETTE
Scott Aarssen is hungry for more hockey.
The London Knights captain wasn't satisfied when a major injury and abbreviated playoff run limited his season, so he added a couple of international puck trips to his training menu during the next month.
This week, the 20-year-old defenceman will be part of a London-laden squad that will play in the 44-team elite division at the Chowder Cup summer junior tournament near Boston.
Next month, he's involved in another off-season excursion organized by London assistant Pat Curcio -- a 12-day, seven-game tour of Germany and Austria featuring former Knights like Rob Schremp, Sam Gagner, Brandon Prust, Dylan Hunter, Marc Methot and Adam Dennis taking on top European pro teams.
"I started getting the itch again," Aarssen said. "I was hurt and that cost me (28) games and everything ended early so I was looking for more. We're on the ice almost every day in the summer but that first game (of a new season), you're almost dead by the third period.
"You can train hard on and off the ice but nothing gets you ready for game action -- not pickup or shinny -- like these kinds of games will.
"These trips are going to be once-in-a-lifetime experiences. They're going to help a lot of us going into training camps and we'll be able to hit the ground running."
For those connected to the pros, the European trip required approval from NHL parent clubs. A couple of teams denied its players permission and Curcio, who has recruited Knights head coach Dale Hunter for the trip, didn't understand why.
"It's mostly young guys in the AHL and what better way to get ready for training camp than this?" Curcio said. "Look at what the Canada-Russia series did for Sam Gagner last year. He went to Edmonton camp in great shape and it helped him make the team."
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Given the inclusion of the 6 pro players (who are Knights alumni) mentioned above participating, I think that the games are up for grabs insofar as who will win.

Thanks Marc for posting this story, interesting read. In the case of the Knights' games against Linz and also Vienna I think the Canadians will win. While the Knights apparently play and parctice on ice throughout the summer to get ready for the camps Linz will only take on the ice 7 days before the game on the 15th. Ice in Linz is only available with the beginning of August (and apparently the club doesn't use it right from the start). I guess this is a difference between two "systems"....

Even with the 5 AHL guys and Gagner, what you have is a junior team (albeit from the world's top junior elite league - the Canadian Hockey League) going up against pros in a league that is getting stronger every year.
While some guys on Canadian major junior teams are destined for AHL and even NHL hockey, many of them top out at the major junior level and go on to play in lower minor leagues in North America or lesser pro leagues in Europe which are no better than (and in many cases weaker than) Canadian major junior.
The Knights squad will no doubt be strengthened by the 6 pros, and a few of the current junior players on the team likely have NHL or AHL futures ahead of them. That means roughly half of the team competing as the Knights will play at a level equal to or above the EBEL teams, whereas the other half will be slightly below EBEL level.
Thus my "it's up for grabs" stance on who will win.
I will say this - the EBEL teams have a decided edge in goaltending experience with Westlund for Linz and Labbe for Vienna.
Regardless, it should be very interesting.

A final lineup for the Knights hasn't been announced yet but because their names are missing from the news story, it's likely that ex-Knights Corey Perry and Patrick Kane didn't get permission from their NHL teams to play. Too bad for European fans! Perry went 70 GP 29G 25A 54 pts for Anaheim Ducks last year and Kane was 82 21 51 72 for the Chicago Blackhawks and was NHL Rookie of the Year.
Gagner and Schremp are both entertaining to watch - we'll just have to wait and see whether their supporting cast is ex-Knights plus a few Junior players or the reverse.

For a trip that starts in a few weeks, the Knights' site has been surprisingly quiet - they've only had the London newspaper story so far. I did email them a couple of days ago and will share any response.
Erlich is listed on the Knights' roster but will have to wait for the Austria/Germany roster to come out to see if he's playing.
According to the Austrian newspater Kleine Zeitung SG Pontebba (ITA) thinks about applying to join the EBEL. With Zagreb (CRO) who is rumoured to have interest too EBEL could be a 12 team league then.

No Problem:
Because apparently also Zagreb has an interest (to join EBEL) it could be that 2009/10 12 teams play for the EBEL title. Concerning Croatia: Greg Holst was a national team coach candidate for some time but after he declined another VSV Canadian, Mike Shea who lives in Arnoldstein, will take over and coach the Croatian cracks. And the rest is about VSV having a young team this year with many domestic players and 400k missing to reach the planned of budget 2.3 Mio.
I guess you might be interested in the first and second part ;-)
Pontebba is really a raising team in italian hockey. They were promoted 2 years ago from second division and last year won national cup, so no surprise they are ambitious, but I don't think they could have a decent budget to compete in EBEL.
More realistic candidate is certainly Bolzano

I'm also quite sceptic about Pontebba. Not that I know too much but Pontebba is just a tiny village. Can't imagine that such a place can support EBEL hockey over a longer time given also the fact that the sport there is not really very popular (compared to Südtirol) in the region. Bozen would be a very attractive team to have in EBEL but I am sceptical about it. It would make only sense if there's a long term committment which I doubt HCB would give. It only needs some unexpected turn of events that make serie A more attractive than it is now and Bozen would leave EBEL to play there again. I'm pretty sure about that. Zagreb has potential too and for the sponsor Croatia is very interesting. And I think Zagreb (Medvescak I guess) would be a reliable partner as they have no other option coming even remotely close to EBEL so that's more realistic. Apart from that the closest thing imho would be to get a second Hungarian team complementary to Alba Volan.

After IHWC Kristan's target was the NHL (a little too ambitious maybe) and now Zagreb? How much money would Zagreb have to pay to Kristan that he plays in a team and a league which is far below his standard? And it would not be good for his career...I would be extremely surprised if this turns out to be true.

The comment below that article means "it's not first of April", doesn't it? I guess we all know who has written that ;-) and I also can't believe it. After IHWC Kristan's target was the NHL (a little too ambitious maybe) and now Zagreb? How much money would Zagreb have to pay to Kristan that he plays in a team and a league which is far below his standard? And it would not be good for his career...I would be extremely surprised if this turns out to be true.
thing is that zagreb is a better place to live and all slovenian players gladely come to zagreb. money-wise, fun-wise. kristan have some problems back home in jesenice, so coming to zagreb and wining a slovenian championship could be one of the reasons. offcourse, slovenian championship is a step down in his career and i dont see that he comes to zagreb. i belive that medvescak would be his last option. he probably wont stay in slovenia (jesenice are out, olimpija offcourse too) so if he doesnt find a gig in some bigger league (hes got problems with agents); well see him in medvescak jersey.
anyways, its good that medvescak is showing his ambition towards ebel, even in this case.
other players that are mentioning as new signings from slovenia are dejan kontrec, luka zagar, jan loboda and dejan verlin.
p.s. rex, youre slovenian is quite good :)

I guess he can always play in EBEL...everyone knows that he is a good goalie. So given the fact that a number of EBEL teams do not have a solid back-up (point rule) he just needs to wait until the first EBEL starter is fired or long term sidelined with an injury and he'll be back. Apart from that I am sure he will find a spot in a better competiton than the SLO league. Zagreb might be nice to live but if he's keen on playing and training hockey adequately it's a no go. But maybe he starts the season with Medvescak to keep fit and then leaves for a bigger team once an opportuity arises.
PS: that Slovenian stuff was really easy ;-)
Latvian Oskars Cibulskis (http://www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=85126) is in Red Bull Salzburg for a try-out
How about this Itan Chavira cat getting a try-out for Red-Bull's Tier II team? Have you guys heard of him? I did some digging; apparently he is to roller-hockey what Crosby and Ovechkin are to ice hockey, the next big thing. Now what this means regarding how he'll do in Austria remains to be seen, but DAMN, look at these moves!

Doors are not closed for Kristan in Jesenice, so he can always stay home. I don't know of his problems, but it was never denied either by him or the board, that he certanly wouldn't stay. Probably they argued a bit, concerning his contract value after the world championship, but at the end I believe he will stay in Jesenice, if there is no better chance somewhere else.
But if the move actually happens, then it would really be one of the biggest moves for Medveščak in their history. Never say never, but I think it would really be a shame both for him and for his hometeam Jesenice.

Red Bulls started their camp a couple of days ago and according to their website they have 50 players competeing for the farm team and there are hardly any names mentioned. Salzburg is going totally new ways in Austria they adopt this NA concept of letting the players compete in camps.
The guy you're talking about has not been mentioned either. I just saw a video of him - very, very soft hands and truly great skills. Read that he started to play on ice just 3 years ago (on HFboards there's a thread on him) but did well last season in MJAHL. If he could make it to pro hockey or succeed at Red Bulls it'd be a fairy tale...his skills could help but apart from making the transition from roller skates to ice skates all the other things absent in inline hockey will come up to him (physical play especially). And he's apparently a very small sized guy...

Graz - Die Graz 99ers haben für die kommende EBEL-Saison den US-amerikanischen Tormann Doc Grumet-Morris verpflichtet. According to the Austrian newspater Kleine Zeitung SG Pontebba (ITA) thinks about applying to join the EBEL. With Zagreb (CRO) who is rumoured to have interest too EBEL could be a 12 team league then.
So we got four candidates with EBEL ambitious already.. Bolzano, Pontebba, HDK Maribor, Medvescak.
I believe no one will enter in the near future.... These entries could ruin EBEL image.

Hmm, I'd say these clubs are free to express their interest...
In the case of Bozen it is as far as I know only a rumour anyway, I don't know (and think) that the club has ever officially stated to be interested. The story with Pontebba is just based on a single newspaper report which might or might not be true (and frankly I can't imagine Pontebba to be allowed they have no EBEL fit facilities in first place). So I think only Maribor and Medvescak are to be seen as really ambitious towards EBEL participation.
But I agree with you, the league has to be careful not to grow too fast and first get its structure and procedures stable and all current participants up to a satisfactory level (Alba has a problem here and from all we have heard and not heard I am not optimistic at all if they get a stronger squad this time). The league is definitely on the right track and I think it has been a good thing for all member clubs despite the issues we have seen. But stability is crucial rushing things with new teams has a risk. If new teams are included one has to be very sure that they are able and willing to stay in the league with a decent squad and the right infrastructure for a long time.
Alba Volán signed Todd JACKSON (USA, F) (http://www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=119012) from Newcastle Vipers (GBR, EIHL)
...So I think only Maribor and Medvescak are to be seen as really ambitious towards EBEL participation.
I agree with Rex. Medvescak and Maribor who will both play in Slovenian league this year have notably strengthen theit squads. Naturally they're still far from EBEL level, but it's a start. Maribor also has a very solid youth program so in couple of years..... who knows.
Tomo Hafner (http://www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=33198) failed to report to Jesenice preparation camp, which is taking place in Moravske Toplice. Apperantly, he signed a two year contract before the season, but failed to report to trainings and he is nowhere to be found. Quite strange.
He started last season as a free agent, but signed a contract later into the season. He played 37 games and scored respectable 12 goals and added 9 assists for Jesenice last season.

Depends. He said that he had no intention to return to Jesenice, but hadn't give any reasons for it yet. I guess it's a personal thing towards managing director Matjaž Mahkovec, who is said to have some personal problems with particular players - now IMHO, if egos prevail, he might demand from Hafner either to pay contract fine (he will be suspended)...
Anyway, it's too early to say anything and I don't want to blame anyone (just yet).

So it is NOT the OHL's London Knights who are touring, which would explain why their website mentions nothing about the games.
This is the "Ontario Knights." This is the name given for temporary, thrown-together London Knights alumni squads that sometimes compete in tournaments or exhibition games.
A lot of the players are AHL or ECHL level. However, most of them have not played together in a long time, and they are not a proper team, so I don't expect them to beat DEL or EBEL teams (despite the fact that the AHL is as good or better than the DEL, and a bit stronger than EBEL). They should beat Bundesliga teams.
While these are still interesting games, I would have been much more interested to see how the current London Knights would have done on the tour.

Maybe, but they play Landshut and Ravensburg on Saturday and Sunday after opening on Friday night against Straubing - brutal start to the tour. Hope they don't arrive on Thursday!
It's very true that they haven't played together for a while, if at all. The only advantage they have is that Dale Hunter has coached most of them at one time or another. Like most pick-up teams, they should get better every game. Fans should find Gagner and Schremp very entertaining, especially if they play together!

Yesterday we got a story from one side - the team. Apperantly, Tomo Hafner already signed a two year contract, but his manager tried to raise his salaries just days before the preparation camp. They didn't reach any agreement, so Hafner decided not to report to training. The consequence - he is suspended and will not be released, unless the team get a compensation, which was agreed in his signed contract (paid either by him or his next team).
The rumours are, though, that the team still hadn't paid Hafner all from his previous contract, which could (will?) be used as Hafners arguement to get released for no compensation.
Considering we don't know the whole story, we can expect a player reaction now and probably media "fight". Nonetheless, Hafners reaction is IMHO unproffessional, as he should attend the training camp - it wouldn't harm him anyway. In any case, the whole situation will certanly not help neither the player or the team...

Short translation of the important parts of the article:
Over one year ago rumours appeared that Medvešcak Zagreb wants to join EBEL. There were some supporters of this idea, especially the main sponsor of the legaue, Erste Bank. The transfer activities of Zagreb indicate that this expansion could be soon reality. Slovenian national team players Robert Kristan, Luka Zagar and Dejan Kontrec are rumored to be targeted by Zagreb.
As these Slovenian players would count as import players a partnership with Alfa (SLO) is considered.
Three teams of EBEL advocate the entry of Zagreb now (I guess Ljubljana, Jesenice and Villach).

When will it be known if Itan Chavira made the Red Bulls team? Being a roller hockey player I am pretty interested to see how he does
The farm team of Red Bulls played its first test game yesterday facing the U20 of Ceske Budejovice (HC Mountfield) winning the game 6:2. Goals scored for Salzburg by Swiss-Russian try out player Alexei Doistinov (2), Philipp Ullrich, Dominique Heinrich, Itan Chavira and Martin Ulmer. This is a nice win for RBS. Sure they played an U20 team but the Red Bulls farm team are a bunch of pretty young kids as well. Lot uf U20 aged players too.
So apparently Chavira is still on the team. Given that Red Bulls II play in the Austrian second tier where only 3 imports are allowed per team it is still a long way to go. On the weekend the team will leave for an extensive Sweden tour where they will play an awful lot of games.
Interesting results also from the Red Bulls U17 team: in a tournament in Litvinov (CZE) RB beat the U17 of HC Mountfield and Chomutov (8:3 resp. 8:2) losing to hosts Litvinov and Sparta Prague with 5:6 resp. 5:7. Sounds good ;-).
Salzburg is right on the way to become the #1 youth hockey organisation in Austria replacing the traditional hockey hotbeds Villach and Klagenfurt and I guess if they continue in the way they are doing now they will also get a pretty good organisation on European level. For their junior department the club has no less than 15 coaches including full time professionals as Anders Melinder or Stanislav Barda. This is not to mention the coaching staff of the farm team under Gene Reilley and Jim Brithen...
Red Bull Salzburg is one of the brightest examples, what you can do with money for a long term development of sport. Usually, teams with such sponsors would go out, buy some overrated aging stars and build a team for three years, until the sponsor gets bored and takes away the money..
Salzburg has really done a great job, though and I think it certanly deserves a respect. Rex, how has the attitude towards Salzburg changed in Austria in recent years? I know a lot of fans, especially from traditional hockey centres (Villach, Klagenfurt), were negative towards Salzburg because of money - but I would assume this has changed a bit now?

I think the negative disposition of many "hardcore" fans is still there. In a calm discussion everyone agrees that Salzburg is doing a great job with their junior program but in the same breath people would still say that Red Bulls destroys the league with their money and that thhe got no tradition and all the usual (and stupid) stuff...
But I would say it is just a minority albeit a loud one. With the football team this issue is much more virulent than in hockey.
Just a couple of days ago on hockeyfans.at forum a proclamation from Cologne fans was posted where the guys state not to go and support their team at Red Bulls Salute tournamnet because they woud not want to support Red Bull this evil capitalist company that commercializes sport just for money and so on...so even in Germany there's such, well...idiots ;-).
@Tanman:
September 19 I think.
Rex, yeah well it's a common thing anywhere in the world. I'd say it's justified sometimes, but in the case of Salzburg, I really don't think so.
Tanman, it's September 19th, yes. In the first round, Olimpija will host Salzburg in replay of the last years finals, Alba will travel to Linz, Innsbruck will open the season against Graz, while both VSV and KAC will have to travel for the first game - Karavanken derby (VSV) will be played in Jesenice, while KAC travels to the capital of Austria.

Villach has finally signed another import. After it was clear that the veterans and partly long time VSV imports Gauthier, Bousquet and Edgerton would not continue to play (at least not in Villach) the club was not very active on the transfer market and the failed signing of the Abbott brothers caused a lot of criticism. New signings: there will be new ones, for sure. Andreas Byström (http://www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=10361) will arrive for try-out soon.

Hi Guys
I have just created the main thread for the upcoming season. Would be great if we share the roster presentations as usual. Please post in this thread which team you would cover. Please follow the usual pattern. If you don't mind please post the presentations here and I will move them to the main thread once we have them all.
I have already made the presentation for Black Wings Linz. I'll also do Innsbruck, KAC and Salzburg.
Thanks!

Cool!:c239:
Szücs: it's more a wild guess I have to admit...read it on BW forum and somehow it sounds not so unrealisitc as he hasn't signed somewhere else. I guess he woud be a great leader for the farm team and if he should fully recover and get back to about the shape he used to have then he could make a nice comback.

Salzburg has signed the 25 year old goaltender Bobby Goepfert (http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php3?pid=64550) for a try out. The 6th round draft (Penguins) played in the ECHL (Augusta) last season.

Sure, I have already created it (Erste Bank Liga 2008/09) and once the roster postings are all done I will move them to the new thread and everything will be very nice ;-).
Tomo Hafner will continue his carreer overseas in newly founded IHL team Bloomington ParierThunder. The team, which was founded in 2006 is coached by former Jesenice player Jarrod Skalde. In Bloomington, also Scott Fankhouser (former Graz and Vienna goalie) and Jeff MacMillan (former Vienna defenceman) will play.
Robert Kristan, Slovenia international goalie, will continue his carreer in Swedish side Mora IK. Kristan played in Brynäs (SEL) in 2006/07, before returning back to Jesenice for 2007/08 season. He is returning to Sweden now.

I don't think that Ales Sals will get much playing time, he's a average goalie at best. Last year for the Springfield Jr. Blues he only played in 18 Games last year and had a very shaky 3.82 GAA, and a .882 SV%. These stats don't look bad for a junior league, but he gives up a lot of big time rebounds.

I did not make it to the games (Linz and/or Vienna) altough I had planned to...plans change ;-)
Don't know if Toni has watched the game in Linz...forum postings don't say too much about the Knights' performance. The teams made a show shoot-out after the game for the 1500 spectators (much more than expected, game started with 15' delay to get everyone in). In the shoot-out Gagner apparently converted his short in a spectacular way as was written in the game report on www.blackwings.at
I'm quite sure that from todays game Vienna vs. Knights we will get a report that has more info on the guests. I will keep you updated.

Again, as I have pointed out in other threads, the OHL's major junior London Knights are NOT in Europe right now.
Rather, the "Ontario Knights" are competing.
Again, they are a mix of current London Knights players, former London Knights players, and some current and former major junior players who never played for London, but rather play (or played) for other major junior teams.
The former London and former other major junior players are pros now, mostly AHL players, but with 3 ECHL and 3 NHL players (2 of whom are really AHL players also, but have a tiny bit of NHL experience).
This is not a true team, but rather a squad thrown together on short notice for this particular tour, consisting of a mix of junior and young pro players (mostly second year pros).

Here are the Ontario Knights' results from their German and Austrian tour, with one game left to play:
Ontario Knights 4 Straubing Tigers (DEL) 3 (n.p.)
Landshut Cannibals (Bundesliga) 6, Ontario Knights 2
Ontario Knights 5, Ravensburg Tower Stars (Bundesliga) 4
ERC Ingolstadt (DEL) 5, Ontario Knights 3
Black Wings Linz (EBEL) 5, Ontario Knights 2
Ontario Knights 5, Vienna Capitals (EBEL) 3
So far, Ontario is 1-1 against EBEL teams, 1-1 against DEL teams, and 1-1 against German Bundesliga teams.

How would you compare this team to the real London Knights in strength. To me it seems that at this point of the season they would be stronger than the London Knights due to the inforcements. Even though the team play is probably not at the best level, neither would it be with London Knights this early in the season.

I'd say that given that the Knights currently touring Europe should be stronger than the OHL London Knights. The vast majority of these players has already moved on to play senior pro hockey, most of them on AHL level. Normally from any given major junior team only some move on to play pro.. So the Ontario Knights are a selection of the subset of higher caliber major junior players and additionally these guys do not only belong to those who will make it but to those who have already made it. So from the individual players this squad must be better than a normal MJ team but of course they were just put together for this trip and are probably not geled together well. But this is likely true for their opponents as well.

That's a good analysis! Only thing I'd add is that apart from one defenceman - Kemp - the oldest player is 22 and the team average age is probably about 20. The quotes after the Vienna game showed that they were feeling better about their play and were really looking forward to the last game.

Alba Volan has hired netminder Levente Szuper. The national team keeper had hoped to get a contract in a better league than EBEL which apparently did not work out. Given that he played in Italy before he still imporved by moving home to Hungary I'd say. Alba is now well set up in net, Szuper is a known magnitude and Hetenyi probably the best young keeper in the whole league.

Overall, Rex's analysis of the Ontario Knights vs. the London Knights is good, but I would like to add a few points.
The major difference between the two teams would be in Ontario's top 3 skaters (i.e. Gagner, Schremp and Pouliot) and the goaltending (Adam Dennis is an established AHL goaltender).
Beyond that, the two teams would actually be very, very close in strength.
Most of the guys on the Ontario Knights are only one or two years removed from major junior and most of them are not yet impact players in the AHL. Major junior players range in age from 16 years old through 20 years old. As has been pointed out, the average age on the Ontario Knights squad is 20 years of age.
However, as Rex points out, most of the guys on the Ontario roster have moved beyond major junior to the pro ranks, whereas on any major junior team, some guys top out at the major junior level.
The actual London Knights squad, in my view, could compete with EBEL and DEL teams without getting embarrassed, but would likely lose most of their games. They might pick off Alba Volan or a team that is really struggling in either league, but beyond that, the best they would do (in my opinion) is to keep many games respectable.
With that said, the DEL is one of Europe's best leagues (within the top seven) and EBEL is, in my view, the eighth best league in Europe, so it really says a lot for North American major junior hockey that its teams can even compete with good European pro teams.
Can you imagine how Swedish or Finnish J-20 teams, or even Russian junior teams, would have done on this tour? I'll tell you - they would have gotten mauled. The best European juniors either play in mens' pro leagues in Europe, or play major junior in North America.
The North American Canadian Hockey League - which actually consists of 3 leagues - the Ontario League (OHL), Quebec League (QMJHL), and Western League (WHL), is by far the world's top junior hockey. It is good enough that a major junior team would not look out of place playing a pre-season game against a KHL or even an NHL team. Incidentally, in the 1950's and 1960's, major junior teams did play exhibitions regularly against NHL teams.
I think this tour was a good test both for the Knights' players before they head to their various teams' training camps, but also for the Austrian and German teams.
The one game that surprised me was Landshut blowing the Knights out 6-2. Beyond that, the games were pretty much as I expected them to be - close.

Adding to Marc's thoughts on the Knights, this is a post from the Oilers message board and the second paragraph gives good insight into the culture of the London Knights - they are a very special if not unique junior team:
This tournament and the player participation doesn't have any connection to the NHL, so they are not promoting it... particularly since it's in Europe. Right now the NHL and European leagues are not on good terms, shall we say. This particular team was put together by London Knights Assistant Coach Pat Curcio. He played in Germany for many years and has taken a team over to this tourament the last few years. This is the first year that he has taken this group, however. There were a number of other former Knights players that wanted to play as well, but their NHL teams did not grant them permission. Pat expressed some surprise at this in the media that, like you, they wouldn't view this as a good opportunity for these players to get a jump start on their game conditioning and cited Sam Gagner's advanced conditioning coming into the Oilers camp last year as a result of having played in the Summit Series... so a few long, sad faces were left behind.
The London Knights are a very progressive and forward thinking Junior 'A' team with the Hunter brothers behind the wheel. They were one of the first CHL teams to heavily draft and recruit from the lower US markets, they were one of the first junior teams to exclusively utilize a five forward powerplay, they regularly shift players between forward and defense positions to increase the versatility of their team. This is just a few examples. So it is no surprise that they are now looking at ways to have their players play... year round. As you can see by the AHL and NHL participation on this team, the Hunters' dedication to their players extends beyond their graduation year from the OHL... they keep their players close to the fold and continue to seek out opportunites for them that will allow them to grow and advance their hockey careers right into the NHL. It is sometimes joked here that during breaks in the hockey season, former Knights return to their old dressing room before they return to their mother's kitchen. Pixiedust
Because of Gagner, Pouliot and Schremp, the Knights' trip is being followed closely on the Oilers' main message boards - oilers.com and hfboards.com. I'm sure with more advance notice, German and Austrian fans would have seen lots of Oiler jerseys at the games. It would be great to see this tour as an annual event.

Two quick points -
1. This was not a tournament. It was simply a tour.
2. The Knights are not Junior A - they are Major Junior (rarely called Major Junior A). This is a very large difference. Major Junior is significantly above nearly all Junior A.
As usual, I have born the burden of covering most of the pre-season games throughout Europe (sigh!). When available, I have also scanned the game reports.
As for the Canadian team, Marc B., I think our members have got the message that it was not the London Knights of the OHL. The team has played with different labels: London Knights, Ontario Knights, London Ontario Knights and Canada Selects.
I'm sure the European tour has been very valiuable for the Canadian players, but to make judgements about how the Canadian team would do in the European league system is almost impossible. The sample is simply too small, and, not to forget, the sample is based on exhibition/pre-season games which often end with awkward results.
London/Ontario Knights started its European tour vs. Straubing Tigers (DEL) on 15 August. Straubing, which was promoted to DEL last season ended up in the lower half of the German Elite League and outside the playoffs.
Straubing's game vs. the Canadian team was its second pre-season game, and it was already played after the game, vs Bad Tölz on 14 August. Bad Tölz played a very rough game, and Straubing lost its best player, Jon Klemm, with a broken nose. So he was unavailable vs London Ontario Knights, as the team was called that night.
Straubing's web page reports, that Straubing played better than vs Bad Tölz, but that the players looked tired in the first half of the game. The site further reports Straubing vs London Ontario Knights was a typical exhibition game with almost no body contact and no hard will to win from neither of the teams.
"Es wurde fast körperlos gespielt und beide Teams gingen nicht mit der letzten Konsequenz zur Sache - typisch Vorbereitung eben.
Straubing Tigers - London Ontario Knights 3-4 SO (1-1, 1-2, 1-0, 0-1)
0-1 09:39 Drummond (kell), 1-1 13:02 Olver (Dunham, Schnitzer), 1-2 22:09 Schremp (Hunter, Hendrikx), 1-3 31:50 Taylor (Quincey, Schremp), 2-3 38:09 Canzanello (Frosch, Whitecotton), 3-3 50:16 Bassen (Klemp, Maloney), 3-4 60:00 SO Schremp
Straubing 3x2, London 3x2, Att: 972
One night later, on 16 August, it was the Canadian's turn to play a "back-to-back" game; this time against Landshut Cannibals, a top team from the German second tier, 2. Bundesliga. What is noticable about this game is that it was Landshut's season opener. The team was presented for its fans and there was a lot of festivitas. Landshut even played with its retro jerseys from 1983 when the club won the German championship. Unlike Straubing, Landshut showed a strong desire to win the game which could easily have ended with a blowout if it was not for the Canadian goaltender (Landshut's webpage reports). Like the Straubing game, this game was also "clean" with very little body-contact.
On a sidenote, the game was quite typical for a preseason game: In the pre-season, teams from the lower leagues often get surprisingly good results when they play against supposedly better teams, for the simple reason that their desire to win is much bigger. And the desire to win is (also) a very important factor in hockey.
Landshut Cannibals - Canada Select 6-2 (1-0, 3-1, 2-1)
1-0 01:51 Welz (Hundhammer, Toupal) PP, 2-0 20:50 Kratoska (Mudryk, Forster), 3-0 27:28 Welz (Hundhammer, Schwarz), 3-1 34:26 Quincey (Prust, Hunter) PP, 4-1 37.40 Bronilla (Welz, Wittmann), 4-2 44:53 Methot (Prust), 5-2 46:29 Mudryk (Kühnhackl, Cottreau), 6-2 50:00 Bronilla (Schwarz) PP
Landshut 8x2, Canada Select 7x2, Att: 500
Next up for the Canadian team, now called London Ontario Knights was Ravensburg Tower Stars from the lower end of 2 Bundesliga. Ravensburg's webpage reports that the German team matched the Canadians very well, but that especially Simon Gagner and Robbie Schremp's technical skills made a difference. The game was fast paced, and once again very clean with few penalties.
Ravensburg Tower Stars - Ontario Knights 4-5 (1-3, 2-1, 1-1)
1-0 09:2 May (Thompson), 1-1 14:26 Hunter (Kemp, Schremp) SH1, 1-2 18:25 Quincey (Schremp, Kell), 1-3 19:35 Drummond (Kell, Taylor), 2-3 20:36 Adduono (Schweiger), 2-4 30:18 Pouliot (Prust, Ralph), 3-4 32:50 Adduono (Richards, Schweiger), 3-5 56:25 Kell (Paige, Drummond), 4-5 59:35 Richards (Ellis-Toddington, May) PP1
Ravensburg 4x2, OK 6x2, Att: 1,300
The Canadian team finished its German tour - 4 games in 4 nights (!) against ERC Ingolstadt from the German Elite League (DEL). Ingolstadt's webpage reports that the German team was plagued with injuries but still managed to win in a rather roughly played game (especially by the Canadian team). ("Trotz erheblicher Personalsorgen gestaltete der ERCI das Spiel gegen die London Knights aus seiner Sicht.")
ERC Ingolstadt - London Knights 5-3 (1-1, 3-1, 1-1)
1-0 09:52 Rene Röthke (Holland, Daschner), 1-1 11:35 Marc Pouliot (Gagner, Hendrikx) PP2, 2-1 28:07 Michael Bakos (Higgins, Nicklulas) PP1, 2-2 29:08 Marc Pouliot, 3-2 36:46 Maximillian Brandl (Waginger, Keith). 4-2 39:09 Thomas Greilinger (Holland), 4-3 47:53 Marc Pouliot (McDonald), 5-3 57:26 Matt Higgins (Nickulas, Bakos)
ERC 8x2, LK 7x2 + 2x10 (Hunter, Taylor), Att: 1,515.
To conclude, on its German tour, the Canadian team only played one match against a team that really took the game seriously, Landshut - and was closed to be blown apart. But this doesn't really say anything about the Canadian team's "true strength" because it didn't seem to take the game vs Landshut seriously.
How the Canadian team would fare in the European league system is, as I noted, impossible to say. The results provide very little information, especially coupled with the actual reports from the games.
Perhaps the team would do fairly well in the German 2. Bundesliga and perhaps respectable in EBEL. I don't know. But one thing is sure, Alba Volan is not representative of the strength of EBEL. The Hungarian team is more on par with the French top teams, and here we are no longer talking the 8th or 9th best league in Europe.
Btw, as this is written, London/Ontario Knights has returned to Germany to play its last game on its tour, vs. EHC München from 2 Bundesliga.
Black Wings Linz - Krefeld Pinguine (DEL) 1:1 (0:1, 0:0, 1:0)
0:1 Stephenson (15./SH)
1:1 Schlacher (56./SH)
The game started quite good for Linz and Krefeld was only dangerous in counter attacks in the first period. In a PP for Linz the puck found its way into Linz's own end with Stevenson chasing the puck. Alex Westlund left his goal and was able to reach the puck before Stevenson but Stevenenson was able to intercept Westlund's try to shoot it out and shot it into the empty net.
In the second part Krefeld came put much stronger and Linz had problems to get the puck out of it's own end until about 15 minutes into the period. Alex Westlund had some good saves to keep the game close. In the last minutes Linz had some chances buttwasn't able to capitalize.
The quality of play declined in the third period, the game became slower and more bad passes happened. Some minutes before the game ended Markus Schlacher launched a counter attack from Linz's end in PK and put the puck in the net for the deserved equalizer.
Linz played without last years top scorer Prad Purdie and the new import player Markus Matthiason.

The results of the test games are very interesting and somehow inconsistent with (at least my) prior disposition up to now. The Capitals which I think have at least maintained their level from last year lost to the Ontario Knights and get thrashed by Martin. KAC with a nominally also pretty competitive squad got absolutely demolished by Skalica and Innsbruck with its imho top squad fared worse against DEL teams than in the last years. Salzburg also did worse than last year in its Salute tournament although their losses were only by small margins. On the other hand Graz surprised with good results at the Bifrost Cup (although they did not do well in Landshut) and the very young team from Linz safely beat the in Knights in the first game and tied Krefeld in the second athough the DEL side had already played 9 test games. And finally Villach, a usual late starter, tied DEL side Augsburg in their very first test game although they more and more lose ground in terms of budget compared to other (Austrian) EBEL teams because of the lack of a main sponsor.
So somehow most teams did not match my expectations...just noise or wrong expectations, that's the question ;-)

It's definitely not my wound you add salt to. You won't find any team in EBEL that I share less sympathy for. :c008:

Thx, have missed that game. I'll add it to the list.

As long as the EBEL teams beat the Danish squads we're perfectly ok :c032:
To be serious, the preseason results up to now are definitely worse than last year. Especially the EBEL teams that contributed the best results in the last years (Salzburg, Innsbruck) have not posted good results and the brutal defeats of KAC and Vienna have also not been seen last years. Maybe the reduction of the points (for the awkward EBEL player point system) plays a role. The limit was reduced by 4 points which is exactly one import player.

They only beat the Danish team 50% of the time - check recent years' results. The two leagues seem to be quite even, though there's more money in the Austrian league. Perhaps greater talents and better scouting in the Danish league? :c032:
Okay, yes, on a serious note, I tend to think the Slovak league has become better. I have also noticed that the Slovak teams have performed much better this pre-season against the Czech teams, their preferred opponents.
Btw, London Knights (the team's name tonight) beat EHC München 4-3 after Shootout. No game details at this point.
@Ontario Knights
The game in Linz was taken serious by both sides as this picture indicates:
http://onstock.snapdox.com/imageservlet/19312/2/image.jpg
As I haven't seen any CHL game before I don't dare to tell how such a team would perform in an European league. In this game I was not overly impressed by the Knights, Krefeld was a much tougher opponent in my opinion.

EBEL and Danish league are surely not worlds apart but I tend to think that the wins for the Danish teams are best explained by the following words I have found on this forum:
On a sidenote, the game was quite typical for a preseason game: In the pre-season, teams from the lower leagues often get surprisingly good results when they play against supposedly better teams, for the simple reason that their desire to win is much bigger. And the desire to win is (also) a very important factor in hockey.
:c212:
And yes, Slovak teams seem to pick up. Despite Slovan ;-)

Briancon is having a hard time this year playing EBEL teams. Last year the French surprisingly (at least for me) won the Sumer league in Bled, this year they are at 1 OT win and 3 losses up to now. Will be interesting to see what Poletna Liga will bring this time.
With today's win Salzburg did not lose the first game of their preseason campain, Alba Volan in contrast has just lost one game up to now...but no they were not playing against the same set of opponents ;-).
Salzburg will play three more games against NLA sides before going to Sweden for a 4 game tour. Colton Yellow Horn seems to be a very good addition, looks as he will pass the tryout for sure. Looking at the tons of points he scored in his WHL career it is very surprising for me that he was not even drafted. Equally surprising were the pictures I have seen from Yellow Horn - he appeared to be very much overweight and not looking like an athlete at all.

"Big" man has already passed the tryout as he, Oskars Cibulski and Ryan McDonough have already signed one year contracts with RBS :

Today an interview with Vienna Capitals president Hans Schmid was published on the sports platform laola (http://www.laola1.at/397+M5f12938ba33.html).
Schmid said that he is confident with the new team despite the club having cut the budget (player expanses I think) by 15% and he also said that he insists on coach Gaudet icing the young players more than he did in the past. Starting from now the Capitals will cooperate with Austrian "event manager" Hannes Jagerhofer to increase the attractiveness of the home games. Jagerhofer among other things is the organizer of the Beachvolleyball world tour tournament in Klagenfurt which is extremely popular (for me this "eventization" is more a threat than a nice prospect) . Schmid is satisfied with hockey's popularity in Vienna but in the long term hockey will not be feasible as it is now without a bigger arena (Albert Schulz Halle has a capacity of 4300). He said that in the development area of Aspern in Vienna's northeast (site of an important battle in the Napolenic wars) a multifunctional arena for 15.000 will be built by 2013 but emphasized that this will be too late for the Capitals. An arena with capacity of around 8.000 would be needed earlier. Schmid made clear that the city of Vienna is trying hard to help and that there are ideas to deal with the problem that are managable within one year but that a precise solution is still lacking.
Personally I think that in the short run nothing will change with respect to the arena situation. Although Vienna's ice sports communty is in dire need of additional ice pad(s) and the Capitals of a bigger stadium we have heard this rumours for quite some years now and nothing happened. If at all I think the big 15.000 arena will be built because Stadthalle (Vienna's by now biggest indoor facility for sports and concerts etc) is too small and outdated (see the ice problems at IHWC 2005) and Vienna will have to invest in such a facility in order to be able to attract and host top fligt events. But if this is going to be built I can not imagine how another big arena would be feasible beside that. Maybe the plans Schmid mentions are for something temporary but that seems far fetched to me.
