Interesting tournament, but I'm surprised. Denmark in EIHC?? Didn't Danish federation choose itself not to participate at this kind of tournaments? What happened??

Decent defense, but many notable forwards are missing, most notably Kim Staal and Morten Green. However, none of the teams will play with their best roster - Norway's for one is essentially a B-team- so no excuses.

Sidenote: Mario Simioni, Sønderjyske's headcoach and arguably the smartest coach in the league, has been invited as guest coach for the Danish team.
Why, I may ask? This has certainly not been a practise in the past, at least not since the famous Boris Kulagin assisted Richard Davis at the soft ice at Las Palmas, 30 years ago. Is it a sign? A sign that the DIU is finally losing patience with Sirant? You may take a look at this:

Historical sidenote added. To my best knowledge, the last time DIU invited a guest coach was 30 years ago.

This sidenote could be very well be the most interesting thing about this upcoming tournament, and I'm not being ironic.

Sirant could surely use all the coaching practise he could get, so why invite a guest coach? My only guess is that something is happening in the corridors of DIU, but it may be wishful thinking. DIU often move in mysterious ways. And their website STILL ain't working!!!

Denmark up 6-1 against Slovenia with 10 minutes to go. I have often praised Daniel Nielsen as one of the absolute best Danish d-men, if not the best. And his development has seems to have taken a leap since he joined Leksands. 3 goals and 1 assist so far!

According to Simioni himself, he has been helping the players with tips for playing on NHL size rinks, in preparation for the IHWC on small rinks in Canada.

SønderjyskE play all their home games on a small rink - and Simioni notes that he may end up regretting giving tips to opposition players on how to play when in Vojens :-)

http://www.sportensverden.dk/hockey/item.asp?id=7702

Whether this is the whole story is another matter - you could very well be right.

Please don't use Sportensverden as a relieable source :-).

Anyway the arguement simply sounds stupid to me. Should Simioni help the players with tips for the small rinks? First of all why should Sirant need any help here? He has spend far most of his hockey career in N. America, and know all the tricks there is himself. Secondly, Simioni has spend many years in Europe now, playing mostly on big rinks. I know that the rink in Sønderjyske is small, but still, the vast majority of the rinks he has seen the last 10-15 years has been big. I really don't believe that that's the real reason.

Karsten
13-12-2007, 22:21
I agree with Butcher. I can smell that something is going on in the corridors. And just to remind: The fact that the upcoming big tournaments IHWC 2008 and the Olympics in Canada will be played in small rinks was the reason why DIU hired Sirant in the first place. So why bring in Simioni?

And here are the results from the first day of Danfoss Cup:

Norway - France 3-1 (1-0, 0-1, 2-0
1-0 08:57 Petter Witnes (Mathias Livf) PP1
1-1 20:12 Damien Raus (Baptiste Amar)

Because EBEL is not having an international break. Neither is DEL, and that's the reason why Norway is missing most of its biggest stars in Europe.

This tournament is basically a tournament for fringe players. It doesn't have much value.

The result today just prove that the Danish league has more depth than the Slovenian league. As if this obvious piece of fact was to be tested. So why invite Slovenia at all. I don't get it.

Are they just being spared to give other players a try?

TREILLE Yorick : out
GRAS Laurent
BELLEMARE Pierre-Edouard

I'd be interested in game reports if there is any.

What about Jan Muršak? I think he deserves a chance in the squad for the WC in Canada. Slovenia would definetly need a (extremly) fast winger. And if his (OHL) team lets him play in U20 championship i dont see the reason why wouldnt he play in the WC. I sure hope HZS will manage to make a deal with his club.

And about SLO team on this tournament. Unfortuantly Slovenia is playing with their B squad. At least 10 of the best players are missing. And yes. Slovenian championship doesnt have that much deepth. Its pretty much an amateur league.

Goaltenders: Patrick Galbraith - Ruben Smith

This game will remembered for two things:

1) First national team game ever in the old Vojens Skjøtehal. Probably also the last since a new arena is being built.

2) Patrick Galbraith made his debut as goaltender and produced another stunning shutout. I think its safe to say that he will be chosen as Denmark's third goaltender at the IHWC.

So big difference? Any explanation? Was Denmark so dominated during the whole game? By shots it seems pretty equal. Bad luck for Norway?

Gleb, I wouldn't put too much emphasis on this result. It was basically two B-teams squaring off. However, if you want an answer, it could be that the Danish league has more depth than the Norwegian. This would make a difference in a game like this.

Aldair

... it could be that the Danish league has more depth than the Norwegian.

Right, Aalborg's relatively success in CC can only prove that the league is improving. As for Norvegians - just pity that they ignore the international tournament for some years in a row, even so pure like CC. Hopefully the new "super-fasel-euro-league" (or whatever the name is) will attract them.

Karsten
14-12-2007, 23:55
True

On a note, I was more sort of referring to the fact that the Danish clubs have consistently beaten the Norwegian teams in the pre-season games in the past 4-5 years. Too me, this is evidence that the Danish league has more depth than the Norwegian.

Still, I think the Norwegians have a far better youth hockey program, and this will count in the long run. To be precise: on the youth side, Denmark may at the moment have better top prospects, but Norway has far more depth.

Karsten you hve the point about whitch leuge is the strongest, but you must have in mind that
Slovenia has only about 300 ice hockey players and we are proud too play in the elite group.
Maybe some will tell you that we should not be amongst the elite but we have the hart and skiles too fight the top teams off the world.
And for the end off this story Ihve a mesage for the Canadiens:take your first game off the championship like you are playing for the gold course we will !!

Trust we, i really admire Slovenia's place in the hockey world. It's impressive for such as small nation to be where you are. It always is. Just like it's(even more) impressive that Denmark is where Denmark is(also thinking talentwise).

But still, Denmark is in another level, and we have to look forward, not down. We have to challenge nations that are at least on par with us. With all respect, Slovenia aren't. And losing 7-1 surely doesn't show me that the players have the skill to play here, quite the contrary.

15-12-2007, 11:35
Sorry, but Denmark is not another level. Slovenia with Kopitar, Razingar etc. (and remember that Rok Pajic is one ob the best forwards of Czech 1st league) will be probably stronger as Denmark in Canada.

I have very much respect for Slovenia, and the Slovenian national team is definitively about the same level as Denmark.
It's just not the Slovenian team we are seeing at Danfoss Challenge. Nearly all the Slovenian players at Danfoss Challenge play in the Slovenian league which is in essential an amateur league. Therefore I think it was wrong to invite Slovenia to Danfoss Cup, just as would think it would be wrong to invite Denmark to a tournament in Slovenia if Denmark was to play with players from its 1 division (also essentially an amateur league).

With all the teams best players, i think Denmark is the best team, without much doubt. Maybe "on another level" was too strong a word, but i clearly see the Danish team as the better team.

Anyway what i was trying to get to was that Denmark HAS to look forward. We have all these top prospects coming up, and our NT will improve a lot over the next couple of years on many areas. When this happens we have play better nations, not playing all those games against Slovenia, France, Italy, etc. Instead we should be looking forward and increase the number of games against nations like Switzerland, Germany, Latvia etc.

I hope my point is more clear this time, and again, i certainly have very much respect for Slovenian hockey.

I haven't read any reportings from the game (except the game summary), but I'm sure the victory was well-deserved.

What about Jan Muršak? I think he deserves a chance in the squad for the WC in Canada. Slovenia would definetly need a (extremly) fast winger. And if his (OHL) team lets him play in U20 championship i dont see the reason why wouldnt he play in the WC.
If Belleville is still in the playoffs (and they would have to reach the OHL final for that to be the case), he wouldn't be going.

Second EIHC tournament won by France. They're coaching at the best for next World Championship. The opponents must be carefull.
