Any updates on Mika Noronen, Danis Zaripov, Ilja Nikulin, Vasily Koshechkin, Anton Babchuk?
Was June 1 a significant deadline for players playing in Russia to sign in the NHL?
Or is there a later date this summer which is the deadline?
I noticed that Lemtyugov signed with St. Louis; I expect him to play well...I like his energy.

Defender Anton Babchuk is in Avangard, Omsk from the comming season.
Goaltender Vassily Koshechkin plans to join "Tampa", but in case NHL will be not enough for him, he wants to play in CSKA, Moscow.

ii. I can't tell you about the dead-line of signing Contracts with NHL... Don't you remember Evgeny Malkin?! :) As far as I know, we have no date!!!

Site Allhockey.RU has made a poll with one simple question: "Who do you think has made the best selection this pre-season time?". People from different districts of Russia have answered, and here's the result (there were 402 voices):

Salavat Yulaev, Ufa - 58.5% (235)
Ak Bars, Kazan - 10.7% (43)
Avangard, Omsk - 5.7% (23)
Sibir, Novosibirsk - 4.5% (18)
Metallurg, Magnitogorsk - 3.7% (15)
SKA, St. Petersburg - 3.5% (14)
Lokomotiv, Yaroslavl - 2.7% (11)
CSKA, Moscow - 2.5% (10)
Khimik, Mytischi - 2.0% (8)
Spartak, Moscow -1.5% (6)
Another team - 1.5% (6)
I don't know - 3.5% (14)

Have we got the new Champion, or that's simply the same situation as it was in Kazan three years ago?

Canadian Norm Maracle, former Avangard Omsk goalie who recently signed for Iserlohn Roosters in Germany, speaks about his experience in Omsk, not exactly a polite statement:

"Only in the Europe again receives pleasure from a life . In Russia for the foreign keeper it is necessary to pay big money, therefore me in Omsk have refused, and Omsk, it is necessary to tell, is not Paris. In city anything is not present, except for hockey, there is no place to have a good time, at me there was not friends, and unique pleasure was to get out of cold Russian winter home. In the Russian hockey clubs everyone play for very big money, and this money are generally dirty, and I have already earned for a life and I presume to play for my own pleasure ”.

I also don't understand his thought... I have earned money in Russia (even though most of them are DIRTY...), and I've dissembled with those Russians who thought that I play for them!!!

CSKA, Moscow has offered him a 3-year Contract, Ak Bars, Kazan - only for 1 year, as if he plans to move to the NHL next season it seems to be more real!!! BUT I do agree, that it's better to wait for the official confirmation from Ak Bars. :)

Transfer update

Amur, Kharabovsk continue to add players: Defencemen Vitaly Levada (http://www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=52992) (Lada) and
Andrei Sobachkin (http://www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=87645) (Crystall, Electrostal), and forwards Andrei Maksimenko (http://www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=19599) (Titan, Klin), Ramil Saifullin (www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=1881) (Avtomobilist Ekaterinburg), Yuri Koksharov[b] (www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=71768) (Zauralie Kurgan) and [b]Dmitri Kolomiets (www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=47569) (HK Belgograd)

Sobachkin was a member of Russia's U18 team in the 2006 world championship.

Recent subtracted from Amur: Forwards Evgeny Chemerilov (www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=71295) (to: Avtomobilist) Ekaterinburg), Rinat Kasiyanov (www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=1808) (to: ?)

Neftekhimik has signed Michael Garnett (http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php3?pid=50639) (Atlanta Thrashers, NHL). Adding a foreign goaltender will add €250,000 to Neftekhimik's payroll.

As the Russian Federation is working to keep the RSL clean from foreign goaltenders (no longer allowed from 2009/10), NHL signings of Russian goaltenders is getting a great deal of attention in the Russian media. Most controversial is Semen Varlamov's (http://www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=72709) 3-year entry signing with Washington Capitals. In the past week, Varlamov has been attending the Capitals' rookie camp, but both Varlamov and Washington Capitals have both announced that he will return to Russia to play with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl next season. The Capitals obviously hope that Varlamov, who is widely regarded as Russia's biggest goaltender prospect, will return for the Caps in 2009/10, but this could prove more than problematic as Varlamov have a 3-year contract with Lokomotiv. Less controversial is Anton Khudobin's (http://www.eurohockey.net/players/show_player.cgi?serial=77166) 3-year entry level signing with Minnesota Wild. Khudobin's contract with Metallurg Magnitogorsk has simply expired, so he's free to go.

The Phoenix Coyotes have allegedly been interesting in signing Aleksei Morozov to a contract worth $1.5 mio per year. A dismal offer for two reasons: 1) Morozov is arguably the best forward in Russia (he set a new all-time scoring record last season), if not Europe. 2) At Ak Bars, Morozov receives $3 mio clean (tax free). Just to match this, Phoenix would have had to offer Morozov a contract worth $5 mio a year.

Forward Toni Mäkiaho won't be playing in Amur Khabarovsk in the coming season after all. Amur pulled the plug on Mäkiaho after he came late to a team meeting. Mäkiaho says that this was due to family reasons and he had reported about coming late to the meeting to the team management. Everything was supposed to be ok but when Mäkiaho arrived he was told that he no longer was in the plans of Amur.

Mäkiaho didn't even get a chance to be on ice with the Russian team. Now Mäkiaho is looking for a new club in Finland with the Helsinki clubs and HPK topping his list.

In Jatkoaika.com it was reported that according to Russian media the forward in question is a North American. Jeff O'Neill was named as the most likely prospect.

I've also heard about Jeff (http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php3?pid%5B%5D=4043) , but that was like rumor between fans, anyway we are to wait a bit.

Payback? RSL would be doing the NHL a favour by removing O'Neill... once upon a time he was a star player. Now... well, he's less than impressed of late.

I don't know how his other attributes have changed in the years but his point production hasn't decreased that much. At best he had about 0.84 points per game and in the last three seasons he has remained above 0.5 PPG. A drop but enough to change him from a star player to a burden? Besides he was the 4th best scorer among the forwards of his team last year.

I would be absolutely thrilled if such a player ever landed in SM-Liiga.

Dynamo Moscow's president, Mikhail Golokhov was interviewed on Radio Canada the other day. The interview went into a fight about Ovechkin and the NHL-IIHF transfer deal. At one point Golokhov said that RSL has been reaching a financial position which will enable the league to compete with the NHL, and that as a sign of this, Dynamo is negotiating with a NHL marquee player. To this the interviewer shouted: "What player, and for what money?". Golokhov declined to answer the question stating that this would complicate the negotiations.

The interview set in motion a lot of speculation. And yes, O'Neill has been mentioned. But then again, Dynamo may not be negotiating at all.

This is the context for the rumour.

Meanwhile, Khimik Mytischi has signed Martin St. Pierre (http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php3?pid=59725) of Norfolk Admirals (AHL). This is a rather interesting signing in that St. Pierre still should be considered as a prospect (he's 23). He was a top scoring leader in the AHL last season producing 99 points (27+72) in 65 games + 100 PIM. He also played 14 games or Chicago Blackhawks producing 4 points (1+3).

There's an interview with St. Pierre yesterday in Soviet Sport. He says that he has been looking for a foreign adventure and wants to test the strength of the Russian league before returning to the NHL. He hopes to produce 40+ points in RSL next season. Should be interesting to follow the young Canadian's adventure in Russia.

News Round Up 24 july 2007

• Lokomotiv Yaroslavl has tried hard to keep the financial terms disclosed, but I told you they would be leaked: Aleksey Yashin's 1-year contract with Lokomotiv is worth $2.5 mio. net, writes "Yaroslavsky Sport". That's about $5 mio if you want to compare with NHL salaries. The club's president Yuri Yakoviev was able to raise the money with extra help from the team's main sponsor, CFR.

• Oleg Saprykin to Russia. Saprykin has not accepted Ottawa's offer. Saprykin's father, Dmitry, has told "Soviet Sport" that Oleg will most likely play in Russia next season. Salavat, which is already stockpiling players, have expressed interest in the fast wing. So has Dynamo, but Saprykin would most likely prefer to play for CSKA, the team he joined during the NHL lockout.

• Difficult season ahead for Spartak. Spartak Moscow's coach, Valery Bragin expect that Spartak will be facing a challenging season. The club has just returned to RSL with a lot of new players. Spartak's financial situation is however fair with a salary budget near the average of the league so there is room for a couple of extra good players. Bragin will review the roster situation after the President of Bashkiriya Cup in Ufa next week, writes Sports Today.

• A couple of exhibition games played today in Finland:

Lada Togliatti - Salavat Ufa 4-1 (0-0, 3-0, 1-1)
Note: Salavat basically played with a reserve team made up of players who didn't participate yesterday vs Severstal
Sibir Novosibirsk - Krylia Sovetov (RUS-1) 7-1

• And just to finish off with some gossip: Ovechkin is ripe for marriage! He has established a very close relationship with a woman he met a couple of months ago, and he may be ripe for marriage, he tells "Your Day".

Oleg Saprykin has supposedly received a $1.3 mio offer from Salavat, and a $1 mio offer from CSKA. Most Russian media do however expect him to sign with CSKA where he played during the NHL lockout. Currently, Saprykin is exercising with the army club. In any case, one should expect the contract to be short-termed, Saprykin wants to return to the NHL within a year.

Allhockey.ru reports that Oleg Saprykin's signed a 3-year contract (longer tha expected) with CSKA and that the contract is worth $1.8 mio a year (also higher than expected).

Compared with Salavat and Ak Bars, CSKA has a relatively modest player budget, around $15 mio. The contract makes Saprykin the most expensive player on the team.

With what feelings leave Los Angeles?
- Without a regret, I and have not found common language with a management of club. And at all has not understood, what for me took in this club. RSL may be reduced to 16 teams - Half of Vysshaya club do not fulfill conditions

Perhaps some of our Russian members should comment on this: http://www.allhockey.ru/news/8220/09-08-2007/

But if I understand it correctly, only 16 teams have signed a contract with the RHF and are thus ready to go for the next season. 4 teams may be excluded. These teams comprise none other than CSKA Moscow, the three other teams are Lada, HC MVD and Sibir. Sibir cannot accept the terms of the contract and has thus not yet signed. As for CSKA and Lada, its their home arenas that do not fulfill the terms (too small, I guess) and HC MVD does not run a hockey school for minor which is also a condition to play in the Russian Superliga. The clubs must come to terms with RHF by 20 August, otherwise they will be excluded from the league!

In Vysshaya no less than half of the teams are unable to meet the new and tougher standards.

Did I miss something?

Actually, this is a small problem.

CSKA and Lada has something juridically incorrect in their lease contracts (for arenas). They promise to correct in several days.

HC MVD because of constant movings has uncomplete hockey school (6 age groups). They wrote a guarantee letter that until the next year everything will be ok so Federation let them play.

The only problem is Sibir. They have discords with Federation on advertisment terms. In RSL half of board advertisment belongs to Federation, and also Federation partially gets money from tickets, symbology etc. And Sibir doesn't like that. But I don't think that Federation soften its requirements for Sibir as other 19 clubs are ready for these requirements. I think by August, 20 Sibir will also sign the big agreement.

As for Vysshaya liga, the clubs (especially new clubs) mainly have the same problem as HC MVD - no 6 age groups in school. I think, the decision will be alike - they must guarantee that schools will be ok in a year.
But some clubs has less than 2500 seats in their arenas and must be excluded from Vysshaya liga.

Two weeks after signing a two year contract extension with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Alexander Svitov has violated that contract by signing with RSL club Avangard Omsk.

Just as the Russian teams seem to be powerless from stopping players from defecting to the NHL, I predict that there will not be anything that the Blue Jackets can do as a practical matter to stop Svitov. A legal judgment, which the Blue Jackets may get from an American court, is worthless if a court in a different country will not honor it.

Of course, if I was the management for the Blue Jackets, I'd let him go and clear the space on my salary cap. Svitov has been an utter failure as an NHL player - drafted very highly in 2001 (#3 overall), he has a mere 13 goals in 179 games. Perhaps he'll have a change of fortune in the RSL, but he's never been a big point producer for Omsk in the past, either. I don't get why he's such a prized player.

Center-forward Andrey Taratukhin signed with Salavat Yulaev Ufa for 3 years.

I only realised this when I noticed that he picked up a point in his first game. I'm rather suprised by the move considering he was on the verge of breaking into the Calgary roster.

As I've written before, HC Dynamo, Moscow has the new uniform, jerceys are like from 60's!!! Looks very impressive, and fans like it very much:
Vitaly Eremeev (http://www.hawk.ru/pic/person/070904_ao_dinamo_06.jpg),
Dynamo (http://www.hawk.ru/pic/person/070904_ao_dinamo_00.jpg),
Fedor Fedorov (http://www.hawk.ru/pic/person/070904_ao_dinamo_11.jpg),

Nice jerseys, especially front look with old style written Dynamo Moscow.

So I've heard. I was just suprised that given that Taratuhkin had already shown a lot of dedication in making the NHL when he came over the play in the AHL for peanuts when he could've have been playing as a superstar in the RSL. Then, after a great season when everybody was tipping him to break into the NHL he signed with Ufa before even stepping on the ice for training camp. I suppose it might have been personal, I read somewhere that his wife and children couldn't get visas to come over.

Many reasons:
1) Semyon Varlamov, the goalkeeper of Loko, played very well;
2) The scoring efficiency of Loko was just fantastic: 7 goals of 24 shots, while Salavat scored only once of 37 shots;
3) Loko was in anger after loosing all 2 games to Ural teams (Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk);
4) Salavat was in euphoria after winning Tatar teams (Neftekhimik, AkBars).

Voloshenko simply quit the Houston Aeros, violating his two way contract that he had signed with the Minnesota Wild.

He was upset that he wasn't in the NHL. Wild GM Doug Risebrough said that he needed to work on various parts of his game in order to make the NHL team. He said if Voloshenko was good enough to be in the NHL, then the Wild would have kept him there instead of sending him to AHL Houston.

Hiller was apparently threathening to accept the offer, and the Anaheim Ducks responded by quickly moving him up to the NHL team.

Yes its good if Russia can balans NHL better but I dont think RSL realy can compete whit NHL before hockey gets more popular in Russia the attendance figurs are to poore.

The low intresst for hockey in Russia was clear in this years World Championship in Москва. Ok a litel bit more intresst outside the capital but stil not good eunoght to compete whit NHL. I think Russian need a succes whit the nationalteam to repopular hockey again.

In terms of numbers of fans at games, the RHL will probably never compare with the NHL. The arenas are smaller for a start.

This does not mean that financially Russian teams will not compete for NHL players in the future. Some of the companies involved in Russian hockey have serious money. And this money does not depend on ticket sales, merchandise or tv streams.....

Does anyone know whats happened to Vasily Koshechkin. Hes gone from being one of the top Russian prospects and one of the dominant players in the RSL and now hes disappeared off the face of the earth after a bad start with Ak Bars.

You may have noticed that Ak Bars has been off to a bad start this season. Part of the reason is that Koschechkin has played below his standards (while Mika Noronen became injured). During the November break Ak Bars made a series of international transfers that included the signing of Robert Esche. Meanwhile, Noronen has returned from his injury, and this has left Koshechkin out in the cold.

Koschechkin has been a starting goaltender 18 times this season. GAA: 2.42, and SVS% of 90.12, no shutouts.

Statistically, he is behind Mika Noronen: GPI: 4, GAA: 1.97, SVS% 89.90, SO:0

and Robert Esche, who has been red-hot since he arrived at Kazan:
Esche: GPI: 4, GAA: 0.73, SVS%: 96.43, SO: 2

And with Esche, the white leopards has started to win.

So you get the picture. Maybe Koschechkin will be traded, maybe not.

Never in history has a team paid that amount of money for releasing a player. The deal is also good for Travis Scott. He will earn 8 times more at Magnita than he did at Kölner Haie.

The main sponsor of Severstal Cherepovets has increased the club's budget by 60 mio rubles (2.5 mio dollars), a 25% increase. Severstal's player budget is now at $10 mio, still much below the top budgetting teams of the league, Salavat and Ak Bars.

CSKA Moscow has signed defenseman Jamie Pollock. Another piece of good news for CSKA is that Petr Schastlivy has resumed skating again after his long-term injury.

AK Bars Kazan has released three players: Goaltener Stanislav Galimov has been loaned to Neftyanik Almetyevsk for the rest of the season. Forward Aleksander Golovin (GP 11, 3+0) has been send to Avangard Omsk, and forward Roman Voloshenko (GP 7, 7+9) to Dynamo Moscow.

Two things to add :

- Pollock still has a valid contract with Nuremberg : he could leave for NHL in the summer, but as long as he come back into a league under international law, the team who has his contract can stand for his rights. In case CSKA would forget that detail, Nuremberg want to plead his cause to IIHF. Of course Travis Scott "million" transfer will feed Nuremberg appetite as for how much they'd like to claim...

- Those Voloshenko stats (GP 7, 7+9) are with Kazan B-team, in third division... He couldn't play any game with first team, as well as he could only play in AHL when he was in North America. Which is why he left to Dynamo to get another chance to crack a major roster.

The main sponsor of Severstal Cherepovets has increased the club's budget by 60 mio rubles (2.5 mio dollars), a 25% increase. Severstal's player budget is now at $10 mio, still much below the top budgetting teams of the league, Salavat and Ak Bars.

Does anybody (and I know considering the secretive nature of player contracts in Russia the chances are low) know the current breakdown of the salaries and payrolls of the various teams around the RSL. For example this article (http://www.sport-express.ru/art.shtml?113383) was published a few years back.

No such numbers are ever released and also that table is only speculation ;-)
One of the aim of Tretiak administration is to get teams to have open finance balance and maybe CSKA will release it at the end of the season. Many presidents are (on paper) in favour of transparent balances

According to a report in the Toronto Star, a Russian tycoon has hired former NHL Players' Association executive Bob Goodenow to help create a new professional European hockey league that would compete for players with the NHL.

Igor Radulov reveals in an interview with Soviet Sport that he has been offered big money to return to the Russian Superliga next season. No less than four of the big time teams have extended offers: Ak Bars, Salavat, Metallurg Mg and Dynamo.

However, Radulov wants to stay in the NHL as he believes that he might be difficult to return to the NHL, now that the NHL-IIHF transfer agreement is in a flux.

I guess, however, that Nashville needs to be careful about how little they will offer Radulov. With the escalating Russian salaries, it is a completely new ballgame as the NHL can no longer ignore what the players can earn on the other side of the pond.

More salary news:

Metallurg Magnitogorsk's president, Oleg Kupriyanov is getting tired about reading fairy tale stories about how much Scott Langkow earns at Magnita. Today, he revealed that Scott Langkow earns $550,000 for the rest of the season. Fred Braithwaite earns three times as much ($1.5 mio) at Avangard Omsk

At Spengler Cup, Magnita extended an offer to Curtis Joseph, but they could reach agreement. Cujo wanted $2 mio. for the rest of the season and Magnita didn't want to pay that much for the aging goaltender.

Oleg Piganovich, defender of Traktor Chelyabinsk, scoring his 22nd goal yesterday, broke "the eternal record" of Nikolay Makarov (the older brother of the famous Sergey Makarov), who scored 21 goals in 1982.

Interesting, that both Makarov and Piganovich was/is players of Traktor Chelyabinsk.

Just wondering if anyone can give their opinion on defenseman Konstantin Korneev of CSKA Moscow. I hear he was one of the best defensemen in the entire league.

Well, he was good but I can hardly say many talked about him. Defensemen are always shadowed by forwards, you know.

In Russia not many defensemen are well known: Oleg Tverdovsky, Kirill Koltsov, Vitaly Proshkin, Vitaly Atyushov, Evgeny Varlamov, Raimond Giroux, Denis Kulyash, Oleg Piganovich.
