I don't wan to contaminate the other thread with this stuff, so I open a new one. I think now the Muscovites are needed here more than ever. As the event comes closer, more and more questions come up.

As usual, it is stated on the tickets that no cameras are allowed in the arenas. It is expressed it a little more complicated: "... any person attending ... shall not record, transmit ... any sound, image, ... It is prohibited to take into any stadium ... any equipment or device capable of ..." This would even prohibit mobile phones. So what do we have to expect? Will common small digital cameras be allowed in the arenas?

I would think that there is not much around the arenas and Moscow is quite big, so a low chance that large crowds of fans will meet just by chance. What are the best places to meet for a few beers after the games?

And one question just for myself: Which record shops offer a good choice? Got a small shopping list with souvenirs I'd like to take home from Russia :)

You are welcome with any question (I wanted to start similar thread before, 'cos thought that would be a lot of questions, but you have done this earlier)!!! :)

This information is general, that's an official ticket that was confirmed in '2000 for the whole Russia and consist of general rules that are not so strict concerning digital cameras (in case you have not the professional one, 'cos for them you are to have permission, but it's also in general)!!! :;

I would think that there is not much around the arenas and Moscow is quite big, so a low chance that large crowds of fans will meet just by chance. What are the best places to meet for a few beers after the games?
Could you please tell me if you prefer pubs or restaurants?

If you need not so expensive pubs, you can visit:
"5 turns" (or it's better to say %... :) ) www.5oborotov.ru on Pokrovka, 16 ( "Teatralnaya" Metro station) or on Sadovaya-Triumfalnaya, 22/31 ( "Mayakovskaya" station) you will find there a lot of fans!!!

"Hard Rock Cafe" (Stary Arbat, 44, b.1, "Arbatskaya", "Smolenskaya" Metro Stations) http://www.hardrockcafe.ru/

"Shtolnya" Bar (Zazepsky val, 6 "Paveletskaya" station).

John Bull Pub Restaurant (Smolenskaya , 2/9, "Smolenskaya" Metro Station)

Actually there are so many places to have a drink... I've been in a lot of them, maybe you can tell me the Metro station, 'n I'll help you.

There are some sources where you will be able to find bars, restaurants, etc., BUT they're in Russian (you can use http://world.altavista.com/babelfish to understand something there...):
http://www.moscowout.ru/eda/bars/
http://www.moscow2000.com/bs/index.asp?Action=Rubric&IdRubric=190

And one question just for myself: Which record shops offer a good choice? Got a small shopping list with souvenirs I'd like to take home from Russia :)

"Soyuz" Records Shop (there's a net of these record shop all-over Russia: http://www.soyuz.ru/ ) and

"Purple Legion" ( http://www.purplelegion.ru/, on "Novokuznetskaya" metro station) are located close to each-other, so that you will be able to visit both these shops!!!

P.S.: Here's the MOSCOW METRO map: http://mosmetro.ru/flash/scheme01.html

Oh, BTW, you can also visit "Tinkoff" Restaurant with an excellent Russian Beer (Protochny per., 11 "Smolenskaya" metro station): http://www.tinkoff.ru/?p=restorans_moscow_address

Ya'll be able to get there some souvenirs too: http://www.tinkoff.ru/?p=restorans_moscow_souvenirs

I guess, the closest decent beer-restaurant to Khodynka is Durdin - it's on Sokol tube-station.
http://www.durdin.ru (it's in russian, unfortunately)
It's a Russian beer restaurant with nice atmosphere, good local beer and nice food. They have large screens for showing sporting events, and they're just one stop away by the tube from Khodynka arena, or about 20 minutes walk.

Talking about record shops - you might like to visit the famous Gorbushka - the heart of piracy in Russia. :) If you're not obsessed with licensed products, then that will be your dream coming true - you can buy virtually anything there for amasingly little cash. :)

... consist of general rules that are not so strict concerning digital cameras
Nice to read. I just remember how crazy they were in Prague. In Helsinki it was more funny: "You must not take pictures inside the arena." - "I can not take my camera into the arena???" - "Of course you can. But you are not allowed not take pictures." Finally no one cared.

Could you please tell me if you prefer pubs or restaurants?

Clearly we prefer pubs :) We stay near the Tverskaya square, so these are in walking distance. Expect us to be there some nights. My travel party will celebrate me for booking the apartment, which means that I have to do the job next year again, which would be the 5th year in a row :-/

Ah I just had a look at the homepage. My Russian is not great, but they have German Bratwurst. Weird :)

Anyway, thanks for the tips!

And where to buy hockey jerseys from russian teams at decent price?

They all cost around 50 Euro and are sold in specialised hockey-shops, like this one: http://www.nhm.ru

B.t.w., it occured to me that we have not mentioned arguably the greatest beer-place in Moscow - "Beermaket"! It's a two-storey beer restaurant, it has lost of screens showing sporting events (they even have a few in the toilet), and they serve over 70 types of draught beer! http://eng.menu.ru/transformer/action__pv/id__336800.html You can see their huge raw of beer-taps on the picture. :)

And I have to disappoint pub-lovers - there're no real pubs in Moscow, not a single one to my knowledge. Even those that actually call themselves "pubs" are simply beer-restaurants - with waitresses, table-reservations, etc.

On "Dynamo" Stadium ("Dynamo" metro station), right where Arena Khodynka is, there's a shop of Lutch Jerceys company (Malaya Sportivnaya Arena - SMALL SPORT ARENA, East Stand 8).

Ya'll be able to find there a lot of different jerceys!!!

And what kind of music do you like?
It's possible to dance Rock 'n Roll music, or... trance... :;

I like "Art Garbage" , where a lot of Russian Life musicians play : http://www.art-garbage.ru/ (on "Kitay-gorod" Metro station, http://www.art-garbage.ru/contacts/). There're also some disco here.

Among clubs with different styles of music I'd name:
"B2" club on Bolshaya Sadovaya, 8 ( "Mayakovskaya" Metro station). There're 5 floors with some halls where different discos, concerts are played: http://www.b2club.ru/index.html

"Roll Holl" with a big dance floor: "Tulskaya" Metro station, Holodilny per., 3 http://www.rollholl.ru/rus/escheme.php or http://tuninghallclub.ru/rus/foto.php

NOTE: IF YOU WANT TO ASK ABOUT SOMETHING, PLEASE ADD MORE COMMENTS, AND I'll ADVISE YOU BEST PLACE.
Moscow is one of the biggest cities of the World, and there's so many places you can visit!!!

Who's gonna be around Moscow during the WC?
- DIN (available throughout the Championship?)
- Serbaz (definitely available throughout the Championship)
- Anyone else? :)

The question is when to arrange it, so that many fans have the chance to show up. Could be a starter on April 26th, or on another day after the games. For those living in Moscow and working during the championship, this could be Friday or Saturday night (April 27th or 28th). Choice of the location may be left to the local people.

Edit: We arrive April 26th early afternoon, we leave May 4th at morning.

I hope to be in Moscow during the whole Championship, so I'm IN, and my offer is "KRUZHKA" close to Kremlin ( "Ploshchad Revolyutsii" Metro station, Nikolskaya, 15, b.1) http://www.kruzhka.com/adress/

It'll be possible to reserve a table there, and watch some games.
Saturday will be the best time to my mind, 'cos on Fridays they would be full of people.

Another offer is "5 turns" (look at my post from 30.03) or any other place close to "Tverskaya" Metro station. :) http://www.sportbars.ru/path.php?current=35&hopes=7

i. It's not so difficult, you just get into the "Partizanskaya" Metro station (NAVY Line) (your hotel "Izmaylovo" is located right there) and drive to the "Ploshchad Revolyutsii" Metro station, where you are to change it to GREEN Line "Teatralnaya" Metro station and drive to "Dynamo" Metro station. It'll take about 40-45 minutes.

From "Dynamo" you are to follow arrows (see attached picture). :)

ii. There's no official page of the Arena, but ya can see it on http://www.hockeyarenas.net/index.php3?page=3000&arID=1319 where Dan has placed the most interesting pics I've made during the Channel One Cup 2007 and while it was build... or here: http://forums.internationalhockey.net/showthread.php?t=4800

I went to Riga by myself last year cause my friends are not enough into hockey. And you know what? You meet good people everywhere, especially if there're so many hockey-lovers around. :) I didn't feel lonely or anything at all. :)
Planning to pay a visit to Canada next year. :)

If you don't want to go underground, you can always order a taxi - a trip to the Arena will cost you around 500 roubles (20 USD), I guess. And there'll be no guarantee that you won't be stuck in a traffic-jam. The safest, easiest and cheapest way is to use Metro, just follow DIN's instructions. :)

tux96

Baechis, have a look here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow_Metro#Description_of_the_Metro

The Moscow Metro is open from about 5:30 until 1:00 (the opening time may vary at different stations according to first train schedule but all stations close for entrance simultaneously at 1:00). During peak hours, trains run roughly every 90 seconds on most lines. At other times during the day, they run about every two to three and a half minutes, and every six to ten minutes late at night. As trains are so frequent, there is no timetable available to passengers.
Comes close to a public transport paradise!

If only there were fewer people during peak-hours there... :)

Baechis, the use of official taxis is not particularly wide-spread in Moscow, because they are very expensive and it is virtually impossible to catch one on the street, so you have to order one by phone. However, you can always catch a car by raising your hand - a large bunch of people earn their living by cruising around the city and serving as a taxi. The problem is that most of them don't know any foreign language.
So, if I were you, I'd definitely go for Metro.

Gee, I really don't know, never been to Arena Mytischi yet. Just by looking at the map and possible routes I'd go for the third one described there - from Yaroslavl station to "Taininskaya" station and then a 15-minutes walk. But that's because I like walking and don't like complications that are often associated with public transportation. If you prefer to use transport, then all three routes seem quite reasonable and neither seems preferable. :)

DIN

Btw, which way to Arena Mytishy... Via Medvedkovo or via Yaroslavl Station?

I've used two ways to get to/from the Arena Mytischi.

i. I enjoyed the "shuttle bus" :) # 169 route, 'cos it's quick (BUT in case there would be some traffic jams it'll trake more time). The location of the station is very close to the Metro, just on the other side of the "Medvedkovo" Metro station exit.
It takes about 25-30 minutes drive, and ya're just 25 metres from the Arena.
You are to ask driver to stop on "ZAGS" station (or simply "ARENA-MYTISCHI", he knows this station well).

ii. The way from "Tayninskaya" Railway station will take about 15 minutes walk, but it takes time to wait for a train that goes to Moscow in the evening (BUT maybe there would be more trains during the World Cup!!!).
At the same time, ya'll be sure that all trains leave in time, and you'd not have to wait for a bus!!!

Russia plays its first game on April 27 (at the same time, Germany plays on April 28...), so on Friday it'll be too hard to find time!!! So, I'm with my both hands for Saturday (April, 28)!!!

If Kruzhka is not good for everyone, I recommend also "Albion Pub" on Manezh Square (Metro station "Okhotny Ryad" , "Teatralnaya" : http://www.albion-pub.ru/contact.htm

It'll be better to reserve some tables and watch some games. I think it'll be better to start on about 8 p.m., it''ll be possible to watch 2 games SWE-ITA, SVK-NOR. That would be not so fast games, and it'll be easier to reserve tables. :;

3. KINGofPRUSSIA
4. DIN
5. Serbaz
6. europescout.de (+2 people)

Here is the time table:

"OT MOCKBbl" means "from Moscow" and "HA MOCKBY" means "to Moscow". The second column says "daily" for most connections, except "OTMEHEH", which means "cancelled". The third column is the target station. For all trains going to Moscow this is Yaroslavl station.

It's difficult for me to tell ya about tent, 'cos have not found any information about it... Think, onle before the IHWC we'll see if there's something in front of the Arena!!! I'm afraid there would be no space for it, 'cos of parking and square!!!

Ok, thanks for the info! :)

The jerseys sold on Arbat Street are not good quality. It is better to buy jerseys from Russian clubs that are made by Lutch.

They are of good quality (but cost much higher than in shops!!!), but it's not possible to play hockey in some of them 'cos they're made as souvenirs!!! :)

We have tickets for the first round. My question: where they sell official tickets for the "Qualifying Round" (no packages)? Only at the stadium or also somewhere in the city?

Or do we just buy our tickets like every year before the stadium from our friends from Algeria?

It's possible to buy tickets either on both Arenas (on Khodynka or Mytischi), or in special ticket offices on streets of Moscow, where it's written БИЛЕТЫ на Концерт, в театр = Tickets to concerts, theatre (I'd recommend you not to try unofficial places that offer any ticket for any game!!!).

But you are to make it as soon as possible, 'cos most tickets are already sold!!!

Just been told this morning that I need to go to Moscow next week on business! Just waiting on my visa to get processed.

Flying out on Monday, landing mid-afternoon, and leaving Friday morning. Since I'm doing a 5-day workshop in 3 days, it may be that I have to work long hours and miss hockey and any forum meet up. But, if I am free in the evenings, I'll be happy to come along.

Hopefully, although my trip might be delayed a week as the client have now said they may not be ready for us next week. If it is delayed a week, it may not be me that gets to go... :(

Yeah, I am so glad that I have been to Moscow - surely not for the last time - and that I have met DIN - hopefully not for the last time. BTW I'll put my ticket of that game in a frame and put it on the wall. This was the first victory for Germany against a Czech (or Czechoslovakian) team at an IIHF championship since 21 years!

@ Graham: Try to learn at least reading the kyrillic alphabet. Makes it much easier to get around. Pictures to come soon. Stay tuned.

Thanks for the tip. My visa is being processed and as long at is done in time, I fly out on the 14th for 9 days. The good news is that it means I can fly my wife out for the weekend I spend out there... :-)

I've just been informed that my visa will be available for collection from the Russian Consulate tomorrow, so I am on for my business trip to Moscow next week.

The one thing that has shocked me is the cost of accommodation in Moscow. $640 per night at the Marriot Courtyard. And that, apparently, is my company's reduced corporate rate. Blimey...

graham, moscow is well known for pricy hotel accomodation, but $640 per night is a rip-off. they must give you luxury suite for that price. you can get a room in SAS Radisson or simmilar brand for up to $300.

i dont mind for a level of accomodation on the trips, as long as it clean and quite with wireless internet - its cool. im in the room only during the night...

We stayed at Izmailovo Vega. We paid for double room CHF 85/person. Good and very big hotel. With metro no problem to go to the arena. Single room was about CHF 160.

The Radisson is actually my company's preferred hotel as it is closest to the office (and one of my favourite chains). But it was full. Of the 4 hotels we have a preferred rate at, only the Courtyard had any rooms. And when trying to bring up details for it later, it would appear that I got the last room in that one!

We really spend a great time in Moskow but we have been disapointed what happened outside and in Khodynka Arena:

No beer and nothing to eat IN the arena (only Sandwiches and Chips). For us no problem! But even before the arena, nothing, really nothing! No Fan Arena, no Beer, no Food! Remember the partys we had before and after the game in Riga.

So this year we went 15 minutes before the game to arena, watched the game and tooked the metro to the city. That was very booring. Hope next year in Canada they make it better.

Hooray for Mytishchi. There is a fan village 200 meters from the arena and no one cares if you finish your beer right before the arena. Anyway, I don't expect that everything is the same as at home - there would no reason to go abroad then, right? The game in the Khodynka arena was the first IIHF championship game since 2001, which I have attended completely sober. That time I went by car to a few games in Cologne. Quite interesting experience.

I remember reading that these Championships were going to be a "festival for fans". I think it was Tretiak that said it.
In the official programme it says Khodynka is a state-of-the-art modern and in some ways unique arena. How true, but not for good reasons. As it is built in the middle of nowhere, there is plenty of room around it for a tent for fans, maybe even a single stall that sells a warm hot-dog.....but no...

Inside it doesn't get any better. They let you in the arena, but don't let you to your seat until the warm-up is half-way through. It wouldn't be so bad if there was a big seating area, beer to drink, hot food etc.

The seating upstairs is shambolic! Big barriers in front of every second row, so you have to sit on the edge of your seat for an unrestricted view. This then makes it difficult for the row behind to see the ice clearly.

When there is a big crowd the people upstairs can't leave straight away because too many people would be leaving at once. Also not enough toilets. Who designed Khodynka? They should be ashamed.

One good thing is the music! As a rock/metal fan it was a delight to hear Rammstein, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Metallica during the games! ;-)
