View Full Version : Larionov's farewell match
Let's not forget Igor Larionov's farewell match on Monday, 13 December.
The game will be played at the Luzhniki Arena in Moscow. Larionov will lead a team of Russian All-stars against a squad of NHL stars dominated by present and past Red Wings players. Steve Yzerman will serve as captain for the team.
The game is attracting a lot of interest in Russia, and it will be attended by president Vladimir Putin. The Russian sports minister, yes, thats Slava Fetisov will return to the ice and play on Igor's team.
I haven't seen the full lineups yet, but the following names have been confirmed:
TEAM WORLD HOCKEY ALL STARS
Martin Brodeur, Chris Osgood (former wings) Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, Chris Chelios, Niklas Lidström, Kris Draper, Henrik Zetterberg, Darren Hatcher, Darren McCarthy, Ray Whitney, Tomas Holmström, Kirk Maltby, Mathieu Dandenault, Jiri Fischer, Scott Gomez, and former wings Luc Robitaille, Martin Lapointe and Steve Duschene.
The World Hockey All Stars will be coached by legendary Scott Bowman behind the bench.
TEAM RUSSIA
Nikolai Khalibulin, Igor Larionov, Pavel Bure, Sergei Fedorov, Pavel Datsyuk, Vyacheslav Kozlov, Sergei Samsonov, Slava Fetisov, Vladimir Malakhov, and more...
Team Russia will be coached by Krutov and Makarov (his friends and linemates in the KLM line).
I believe (that is I have read) that the game will be broadcasted live on the internet: www.cn8.tv. At this point, I don't know what time the game starts, but I will look into it.

It sounds like Bryan McCabe just had his farewell match in the Swedish League. :kidding:
Apparently he was -12 or something in 10 games, of which his team had lost 9, and was benched for his last game, which his team won 3-0 without him.
McCabe decided to flee back to Canada.
I'm sure DanCan has the details. I just heard the story in passing on TV.
Yes, I have already mentioned it.

Seriously??!? Cool.
Anyone have a picture of Stevie Wonder in a Russian jersey?
Yes, indeed. What is more, Yzerman even scored two goals for Russia. Add those two goals to his career stats! :653:

Why did Yzerman play for the Russian team?
Why did Yzerman play for the Russian team?
The captains of the two teams switched side before the last period, and since Yzerman was the captain of the Worldstars...

So I assume Larionov was the Captain of the Russian team?

NyQuill, they showed the highlights on the Score / Sportsnet and TSN - it was cool to see Yzerman wearing the Russian jersery with his name spelled in cyrillic!!
Funny thing is that he ended up scoring the winning goal for the Russians :101: He was quoted as saying that he hoped he played well in front of the Russian crowd so they'd think that he is a somewhat decent player!
Ja, I'd skimmed the thread quickly and hadn't noticed the links that DanCan had inserted regarding the game.
So I read the article ;)
In a game like that, all you want to see is some good hockey by some very talented players. It sounds like the fans got that, so everyone goes home happy! :drink2:

Why did Yzerman play for the Russian team?
Igor Larionov said, that the evening before the game Scotty Bowman and Krutov had decided it in a bar, where they were drinking red vine. :005:

it was a wonderful match to watch, very entertaining, too bad russia doesn't develop more Igor Larionov's, a true master of the sport, his passing and technique top class, and a great human being. i am glad we were able to watch him play for as long as we did.
