First post does not concern UPC-Ligaen, but the Norwegian 1 Division:

in 2006-07, 1 Division will be expanded to 16 teams and the UPC elite club's 2nd teams will be allowed to the division. At this point, it is still uncertain whether 1 Division will be broken up to a North/South (or East/West) division.

But the 16 teams in 1 division will be:

• Bergen
• Frisk Asker-2
• Furuset-2
• Gjøvik
• Grüner
• Hasle/Løren
• Lillehammer-2
• Lørenskog
• Magnlerud-Star
• Rosenborg
• Sparta Sarpsborg-2
• Stavanger-2
• Stjernen-2
• Storhamar-2
• Vålerenga-2
• Kongsvinger

UPC-Ligaen: 2006-7 Structure

• Season starts two weeks earlier than in previous years. First round: 7 September 2006.

• There will be no bonus rounds. However, in addition to the 42 normal rounds there will be two extra rounds where local teams will play two games against each other (both home and away). So the regular season will be 44 rounds.

• The ten teams will be divided into two regions: region 1: Storhamar, Frisk/Asker, Trondheim, Lillehammer and Vålerenga. region 2: Furuset, Sparta, Stjernen, Comet and Stavanger. The teams will play 6 games vs opponents within their own region and 4 games vs opponents from the other region. That makes 6x4 + 4x5 = 44 games.

• The Danish playoff system will be adopted, implying #1-#4 of the regular season choose an opponent that ended up #5-#8. Highest ranking teams choose first.

• Players under 23 years can be moved up from the farm teams in Div. 1.

News Update 24 June 2006

It's the silly season, and as ususal has Trondheim IK not got its license renewed. The club has a negative balance sheet of NOK 3.3 mio and a budgetted deficit of NOK 609.656 this year. Trondheim IK has been given the deadline 1 July to come up with a specific plan for solving its financial problems. In the worst case, the club risk being relegated to 2 Division (again).

Over the next weeks, I will present the teams one by one. I'm not an expert in Norwegian hockey so this exercise is as much for my own consumption as it is for yours.

Still waiting for an update on Trondheim IK.

The club didn't get a license to play in UPC-Ligaen. On 1 July the deadline for appealing this decision expires. If TIK chose to appeal it had to come up with a solid financial plan. My guess is that TIK did appeal but there has been no reporting on this so far.

But, no doubt, the club is in dire financial distress:

Negative own capital of NOK 3.3 mio. Budgetted deficit for 2006-7: NOK 0.6 mio. Add to this that TIK didn't pay their players salaries for around 2-3 months last season. Result: Nearly all the players exited and TIK has had a hard time signing new players (to date only 4). If Trondheim does play in UPC 2006-7, it will primarily be a junior team supplemented by very cheap foreign players. In effect a team that will only be of 1 division calibre.

If TIK's appeal is rejected, the club will be relegated to 2 division (third level).

Ramses those are some really good guides to Norwegian hockey. It would have taken me ages to go find out the things about those teams.

I was wondering there is any way to find all time records? I can understand a bit of Norwegian, because I can speak, write and read Swedish a bit, but strolling trough the websites take a lot of time and patience as my language skills are quite rusty. Plus Norwegian is not exactly Swedish and Swedish ins't even my native language. :002:

Otherwise some material and possibly player analysis' would be great to find. This sounds quite far fetched, but are there any video material (stream, downloadable or DVD etc.) available anywhere? I think that some of the game are televised.

Update from Gunnar Svensson (an agent) site:

Because of financials Trondheim will not get the licence to play in the highest league in Norway coming season. They will be dropped to the second league. The federation made that decision on July 20. Their place will be offered to Manglerud Stars.

Trondheim IK did get a licence after all.. The Norwegian Icehockey Federation went back on their decision yesterday and the federation said in a statement that the offer to Manglerud Star will stand, and the Upc-Ligaen will maybe go ahead with 11 teams this season.

A new signing for Sparta Sarpsborg on the 10 of July, was Torbjørn Johansson. There`s big expectations in Sarpsborg, that he will be one of the best defenders in the Upc-Ligaen!

http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=348

With the signing of Johansson, Sparta Sarpsborgs squad for the 06/07
season is complete. They have a very strong squad this year, they have not had a strong squad like this since they were promoted in 1997 i think, and it will be very disappointing if they`re not a top 4 team.. The signings of Jiri Jantovsky, Kristoffer Starck, Petter Witnes, Felipe Larranaga and Torbjørn Johansson shows that they will be up there..

Hi Hanken and welcome here!!

Good news after all but i think next year problem will be the same...maybe Federation should be severe with clubs in financial troubles.

There was some IK Black Panthers club (runner-up in the season 2005/06 - hockeyarenas.net) club in Norway. Where is it now? What's happened with it?

Anders Myrvold (31) was involved in a fight at the night club, Stravinskij, in Oslo after Vålerenga's annual Christmas Lunch on 23 December. Myrvold was found by the Police at Rozenkratz' gata in Oslo at 4:30 in the Morning. His condition was critical. He was immediately brought to hospital where the doctors determined that he had suffered a skull fracture. Hello

I would like to know how is the playoff system in norway.
I know the first 8 teams of Get-ligaen will make the playoff. But what will happen for the ninth ? And for the last team ? Is it automatically relegated in Division 1 or what ?
And in Division 1, which teams can apply for get-ligaen ? Can the team reserves (such as Välerenga 2) can be promoted. And who can be relegated ?
I'm betting on get ligaen and division 1 that's why I'm interested.

Thank for your answers.

9th and 10th will play a qualification series vs 1th and 2th in 1 Division (6 rounds). The secondary teams of the Elite division teams cannot participate in this series. The two top teams in the Q-series qualify for Elite serien 2007-8

Thanks.

That's why Trondheim seems to not fight anymore, 8th is over since ages.

It's more than that...

I've learned from a close friend in Norway that TIK is out of funds...they are VERY close of folding altogether.

Frosken, you are well informed. Two weeks ago, TIK was once again on the brink of going bankrupt. The players weren't paid their salaries and the team was due 1.5 mio NOK to a creditor. Well, the money was found - once again - and the team is saved for now.

The story continues next Summer when we - once again - will read that TIK didn't get its license renewed.

In other news, Lørenskog is more or less ready for the qualification series vs the two bottom teams of Get-ligaen. Gjøvik and Maglerud will battle for the last spot. Incidentially, these two teams square off in a crucial game tonight.

Not only TIK faces financial woes, Frisk-Asker is also in deep crises. The club need NOK 1.4 mio to complete the season. Frisk-Asker has already made significant expenditure cuts but the club's revenue has dropped signficantly this season. At this point it's uncertain whether Frisk will be able to play against Sparta on 17 February.

Bankruptcies are not uncommon in Norwegian hockey. A few years ago, Bergen and Sparta went bankrupt, and Trondheim has been on the verge of it for quite some time. The Norwegian hockey federation has no backup plan should Frisk-Asker go bankrupt.
