Below you will see the three main skating lanes. These skating lanes start just above the face off circles and go up ice, to the attacking blue line.

Now, I numbered them 1, 2 and 3. These skating lanes are not just for each winger and they are not assigned to them.
If you have a player or players, that skates up the ice in each passing lane, this is known as "Linear" hockey.
It is very easy for the defending defenseman to cover this type of play. In fact, it is very easy to cover two players if they both stay in their skating lanes.
This is why it is better to weave across skating lanes. More on that later!
